I didn't think anything carried over in the first?
I played the hardest difficulty immediately in that game though so I guess I wouldn't know.

Seriously though, only 3 saves, and considering how much I died just in SURVIVAL: my life is over

I just encountered those crazy enemies that hide from you then charge. JESUS CHRIST. Very clever enemy design. This was genuinely a nail biting moment.

Fuck. Played this for about an hour when I was drunk last night. I can't remember what happened and it doesn't let you select chapters. Damn.

I'm the only one on the planet who didn't like the first one?

I seriously didn't get the hype about it. It was the Alien game that never happened. I have the first game and have yet to complete the first chapter. I'm never like this with games, usually I give them a try, but as soon as the lights turned off and I was attacked about three times, I knew that there wasn't much reason to play on: I'd basically played the whole game right there. Besides this, it isn't even scary, just jumpy at some bits. What happened to the great horror games that no one really noticed? Call of Cthulhu: Dark corners of the Earth was one of the best games for the old XBOX and has never received as much recognition as it deserved.

I said to my friend Martin that I'll give Dead Space 2 a try if he tries Red Dead Redemption, so were swapping next Wednesday. I'll write what I think of it then.

It's not hugely different so you probably won't like it.

Shocking considering you didn't even play the first chapter in its entirety.

Please don't...at least not in this thread.

Oh no. Aren't I a bad man for hating terrible controls, a shit character who does fuck all but hit things and lumber around slowly, and little to no scares. Its a horror game; its meant to be scary and have someone to root for.

"Please don't...at least not in this thread."

There's a shocker; you don't want to hear an opposing opinion.

How were the controls terrible? Did you want the engineer in the space suit to be running around like a fucking ninja or something? Were buttons mapped improperly? Was the turning too slow? Were the controls unresponsive?(The answer is 'no' to all of those) Maybe you just didn't get the hang of them in your paltry little play session.
and little to no scares
I'm glad you could glean from less than a chapter's worth of play that the rest of the game is devoid of scares....

Not from you. Your opinion of the first comes off as extremely ignorant, and if it's any indication of how you'd approach the sequel, I doubt many people would want to hear it.

I'm never like this in games. I don't usually judge by the first mission in a game, but the game really let me down. And I was one of the games I looked most forward to but I really couldn't get into it and from the first level it didn't really interest me. The enemies seemed generic, and easy to kill and I quickly realized it was just a slow crawl through hallways. And I didn't like the real-time menu; I don't want to try to find out where I am in the infinite dark hallways, because I might be rammed up the ass my a "Necromorph" (Xenomorph, anyone?)

Also, don't assume I'm completely ignorant. After I played some Red Dead with one of my mates, he went off, and I couldn't decide what to play. I remembered Dead Space, the game I only played a little and put down. And then I put it in. I tried to keep with it as I played on and kept in my head that It'll get better, as you say. But really, it just seems like more of the same. I'm still playing it now and its seems the same.

Although I'm going to keep on playing, and I will get back to you if I have an epiphany.

Nah, it keeps being the same. Dead Space 1's one big issue is repetition really.

If it doesn't click with you after a couple of hours, there's no hump there that you'll get over where it'll suddenly start rocking or anything. The methodical, heavy trotting along, the location based combat strategy and the upgrading your abilities that is established early on is a very strong foundation and certainly enough to carry the game throughout, but if you don't fancy it there's really no point.

It's nice for someone to actually give me a sane reply. Cheers Simon.

I played the demo for the second one and the horror emplaced there was pretty well done; walking down the hallways and then relentlessly jumpy moments until you go zero-G. Then there's that big ugly fucker in the church and all the babies attack you. It was kind of fun but I can imagine how repeated this formula could be. My friend might give me a loan of it on Wednesday so I think I'll see if it really is repetitive.

Thanks again Simon for not biting my head off. ;)

The 2nd is less repetitive than the first. I also think the repetition is less of an issue if you play the games on their highest difficulties. It adds elements you otherwise wouldn't be concerned with.

In 2 they really played with how you travel through the game more. It breaks things up better.
