Forza Motorsport 2

So do I, Forza2 seems better, but does it impact the game's graphics ? I'd tend to say yes, as the system has to render the environment twice (given that the sky and a large portion of the road in single player are probably not really CPU/GPU consuming) and the physics engine has to work on 2 players' driving.
I might be totally wrong though !

So why does a French preview say that the graphics aren't that great and that they expected the game to look much better? What I find most surprising is that they explain the graphical downgrades by the fact that they wanted the game to run at 1080p...

I sure hope the preview version is to blame and that the game will look better than just ok. :(
I'm curious if you can actually speak french or not?

Supposedly, it's upscaled, so 1080p might not be the only one to blame. They also mention split screen as a reason. I haven't played much split scren on PGR3, it's highly uncomfortable, and I'd say it's not worth the price in the graphix deparment.
What do you mean they mention split-screen? As in there will be no split-screen or what?

The only mention of split screen i could find in the article was what Driftood posted
Visuellement, même si on espérait un peu mieux, Forza Motorsport 2 affiche une certaine forme. Pour que son jeu tourne de façon fluide en 1080p et à deux en écran splitté, Turn 10 a toutefois dû faire pas mal de compromis.
It says something like they had to make compromises to get it to run fluid in 1080p(720p upscaled?) splitscreen or something(horrible babelfish translation).

Basically, they say sacrifices had to be made so that the game can run smoothly at 1080p an in split scren.

From all those new videos i've seen i am of two minds about the game. On the one side, i've seen the best looking cars and lighting ever. On the other side most tracks from Forza 1 looks almost the same. The environments are a really big disappointment to me. Everything looks so flat and the textures are out of date.

Keep in mind regarding textures these are low res vids we are looking at. We should probably wait to see what it looks like on our hdtvs.

I'm still not seeing what you are saying about the textures, they are high res and pretty detailed(you can see this in screenshots,just look at the road textures). Obviously the tracks are going to look the same, they are the same tracks afterall.

No reason to get defensive, I was just gonna ask if you could translate the last part of the gamekult preview but babelfish seemed to work to some degree so don't worry bout it.

You must be kidding? The road textures are one of the best examples for bad textures. Everything is blurred, not detailed.
Obviously the tracks are going to look the same, they are the same tracks afterall.
You just don't get it. It's not about altering the tracks by adding other objects or something. It's about the level of realism of those objects. And in my optinion they look like Forza 1. Sure, you see "some" more details because it's rendered in 720p instead of 480p, but it's almost the same with other lighting on the track. I don't see why i have to drive over some flat grass textures. I don't talk about the 3D grass because it is not that grass from X06 and it looks really faked. If i look at the rock textures of maple valley i get eye cancer.

Milhouse I think you are wayyyyyy off on that one.. the road textures are some of the best textures in forza 2. Don't let some of these vids where we can't see the road properly fool you.

The road looks great. As far as textures go just pay attention the textures certainly aren't low res. My biggest graphical gripe with this game is the aliasing the rest I think is really well done. To really see textures aren't a problem in this game just look at maple valley and a couple of other more nice to look at tracks.

I'm honestly impressed by what Milhouse says. I think the environments are very decent, and I wouldn't call the road textures bad by any means. On the other hand, I wouldn't call those cars nor lighting the best ever because.........well, they are both VERY FAR from it (and I'm not going to other genres, I'm talking racing games only).

Preview over at xboxfront.de, its in german, but some translator wrote an overview:
"ok, basically nothing new.
they say that it looks better than anything before.
even a lot better than pgr3.
specially the nürburgring is unbelievably detailed...

and it seems like all the flaws of part 1 are fixed.
the sound is perfect.


the rest is just the typical list of features.

GT HD sneakily gets away with current gen physics, and reworked ps2 game assets and manages to create an absolutely stunning look with it, but it is just one car and I wonder though if they can get away with such environmental assets with it looking as good as it does whats to keep them from doing the same with the full game.

The physcis are most likely being upgraded though of course. Eager to see how the next gran turismo looks and plays.

GT HD lighting is simple, but looks so realistic.

No, it doesn't look realistic. It's far away from being realistic, much much more far away than FM2. Because just some cars looks realistic doesn't mean that the lighting is real. There are almost no environment reflections and you only see some kind of shadows. If i look at the car the lighting looks almost so static. Totally regardles if the car turns around the corner or turns around by 360° or whatever, it always looks like the light source are always shining on the same places of the car (there are only some shadows). But this is absolutly not possible, because the light source has to move "over" the car if it turns around or whatever. By the way, the lighting looks always so diffuse. Some cars looks really stunning, but the lighting is the last thing i would call realistic.

whats your drink of choice man....i wanna buy you a pint for the best , to the point post of the tread.

and to others...forget GTHD and its ONE FREEKIN CAR on track at any one time....lets se what GT5 can do.....because the GT series can ony dream of doing what forza is doing with regards to physics and online and car customisation and car damage, and the graphics sure are sweet .....and there is going to be NO damage model in GT5,
forza2 is the daddy now
hope to bump(not literally) in to some of you online when forza ships :D
