While Forge may end up being the key to Halo 3's longevity, saved films will be the key to its propagation. We were fortunate enough to experience a first-hand demo of Halo 3's saved film feature in action, and based on our hands-off look we're fairly certain this bonus feature hits all the right notes, a perfect mix of ease of use, flexibility and functionality. Recording a game film is quick and easy -- and versatile. We saw it in action for a standard multiplayer session on the Sandtrap map, but we're told it will also work in campaign, co-op and Forge modes.

But Halo 3's data recreation has another even more impressive benefit: it frees up the viewer's perspective. Where an actual video would be limited to the perspective from which it was recorded, this data-driven approach allows a viewer to jump instantly to any player's point of view... or to skip the in-game perspective altogether by moving the camera outside the eyeballs of all the Spartans and Elites running around blowing each other to pieces. The free camera controls are effectively identical to the Monitor controls in Forge, a simple and intuitive way to navigate fully 3D space.

The explanation for why they speak English is really irrelevant, since Halo is anything but hard science fiction and the concept of universal translation just exists as an easy way out. How do we know the Covenant language so well, in such a short period of time, that we should be able to perfectly translate it, anyway?
Master Chief has a babel fish in his ear.. is an equally good explanation.

Not a single member of the covenant speaks a lick of english.

The books maintain that AI's like Cortana used a database of Covenant language (which grew by the day) to create a translator. The ability for MC to hear all the Covenant's language was because of the translating ability of Cortana (which was something she would have left in the Chief's armor for Halo 3). Drones and Jackals probably still have their native tongue because it's more shrieks and high pitch noises (like dogs, cats, birds, insects, etc) than an actual language with writing. Obviously gameplay scenes with the Arbiter were in English because it helps tell the story better (as most people hate subtitles).

Halo Uprising demonstrates that the Covenant DO NOT speak english - the scenes with humans have the Covenant speaking that hieroglyphic language. The only way they can "speak" English is through a translator. At the end of Halo: Uprising #1, the Brute is broadcasting his message through a translator (which is easier in the Covie's case, as they only have to decipher one language that is much less complex than their own) just like a previous scene with a certain high ranking military official.

The official answer: a translator, or as you put it - babelfish =P

Odd resolution. And unlike some other screenshots, that one sucks. MC and the grunts look totally flat. It almost looks like their normals are turned off. Some AO maps would have done wonders. Also, the flatness/lack of depth is partially caused by how they are doing self shadows. Not so noticable in this shot, but something I noticed is that self shadows are not as dark as the shadows cast onto the ground. And as bright as that grenade is, casting light onto the close bunker wall, you don't see it anywhere else, like on the grunts.

Looking at MC's leg and the gun on it and technique wise it looks like an Xbox game. Very flat texturing. And the crate isn't casting much of a shadow or, it seems, at the same angle as the bunker to its right.

I don't know why companies release screenshots like this. It isn't even interesting. Ok, you have some grunts... and? Trees? Ok, the trees look nice.
