Just started playing H3 again, and I was really shocked at how GOOD the control feels compared to anything else on console. Now if I could just ignore the pre-teens screaming "waka waka waka" over and over, I'll be set. My problem is with my busy schedule, lunchtime is the only time I can play :(.
As for the BR/AR argument, It's really all about range. I just switch back and forth depending on how close I get to someone. Granted, once I shake the rust off, I'll probably go BR much more...

I just rarely use a headset when playing Halo, and just go mute crazy.

That is the number one most annoying problem Halo has, due to it's popularity it has an intense amount of people who play it that feel the need to do nothing but trash talk and make crude sexual/racist jokes the whole time.

Makes me miss the lan party days SOOO much.

Halo Reach the Beta Maps Q&A:

IGN: Why did you choose these specific maps for inclusion in the beta?

Chris Carney: All four maps were chosen in order to test a specific selection of gametypes and team sizes. Sword Base and Powerhouse cover the Slayer, Headhunter, end of the spectrum, Overlook is perfect for the NT 1* ("Generator Defense") game type, and Boneyard is a great landscape custom built for Invasion. Each map brings unique elements that we want to evaluate and hopefully contain enough variety to be appealing for the duration of the Beta.

*"Network Test 1", the not-so-fancy name for one of our targeted tests/experiences in the public beta.

Yea, the maps look great. The one that is hardest to take a visual liking to, unless I try to understand what it's most likely meant to be, is Swordbase. Looks to me like a secret ONI facility of some sort, or perhaps it's the Forerunner areas that are secretly underneath the secret ONI underground facility, as described in First Strike, or perhaps it has nothing to do with ONI at all and it's just some entirely different forerunner structure.

Ahhh this map is called Overlook, and now the reason it looks so amazing makes sense.

Lars Bakken: Overlook was chosen because we needed to use a Campaign-style map for the kinds of network testing we require for the Beta. This map is one of the furthest along artistically on the Campaign side, and it really fit with the design of the Network Test 1 gametype ("Generator Defense") you'll be playing on it. Where it's true that all the other maps you'll see in the Beta were built from the ground up for MP first, Overlook was hand-picked from existing Campaign content to fit this gametype's purpose. Don't think we didn't modify it to fit better in an MP-style experience though.

It's taken directly from SP and it's the furthest along artistically.

Yea, I saw that, but as it relates to that secret underground ONI facility described in Halo : First Strike, if Sword Base is meant to be at all representative of that very ONI facility, then there's some definite forerunner artifacts present, although it was questionable as to whether ONI truly knew what lied beneath the facility. The fact that they didn't find the "Holy Light" would suggest that they probably didn't know it was there.

Bungie saying they are all human themed, if Swordbase is meant to represent that same ONI facility I'm thinking about, wouldn't exactly be dishonest on their part. They'd be telling the truth, just not the whole truth as to its significance in the campaign.

Although, there'd be something MOST interesting about the possibility of Noble Team even ending up at that facility in the first place. Now THAT would be a risky move on Bungie's part with regards to the story, and sorta the direction I want to see them go in, risks.

Any word on how long the beta will be out for? A month or more?
I don't own ODST and don't wanna buy it for the Beta if the Beta isn't going to be out for very long.
It's gonna be SOOOO tempting though lol.

ODST is easily one of the best entries in the series, your paranoia about the price is really out of proportion.

The issue isn't one of price, I just generally assumed it to probably be some cheap cash in that wasn't going to end up being worthy of the series name.

But you'd say the SP portion is well put together and worth it? I've heard that the soundtrack is easily one of, if not the best in the series, but if the SP campaign is of the sort that shouldn't be missed, then perhaps I'll give it a shot.

In terms of storytelling, Halo 1 was very unique. It used a style of narrative that Marathon had already established, but perhaps more successfully Halo offered two distinct layers to its story. You had the overarching plot that anyone could consume by just loosely following the series of events that played out, and by the end they had been on quite the space oddysey. In addition though, if you scratched the surface and started piecing together radio chatter, clues from elements in the world, reading into the meaning of the naming of things, you could unravel so much more that made multiple playthroughs not only a honing of gameplay skills and being able to delve deeper into the combat, but also adding a deeper understanding of the events that transpired. Its two sequels were more linearly cinematic and didn't encourage that approach as much, but with ODST it's back in full effect.

The other way to look at it is purely at its gameplay merits - its structure. Here, ODST shoots through the roof. Abandoning the notion of being epic first and playable second - a nasty habit of the later part of the trilogy, locales are much better assembled to support the core combat of Halo. Conserving ammo and factoring in realth packs alters your play style to taking advantage of the enemy's weak points and exploiting their AI behavior. This coupled with the setup of New Mombasa as a hub area and basically picking and choosing environments for the flashback missions without having to worry about constant connectivity and coherence between those chunks, means that variety is there in abundance. As a straight up game, ODST is the culmination of three great action games with a carefully thought out vision behind it, one that effortlessly moves between showcases of its combat in the best possible light. One that has measured what components push you to make the most of all of its tactics and one that without a flinch delivers all of it in a compelling package.

Damn you Simon, you've hit a nerve with this review. Guess a purchase will be happening, and I guess as an added bonus, I'll also have the opportunity to participate in reach beta.

Oh yeah, as a crazy Halo fan, you should definitely appreciate ODST, Optimus. If you are like me, then the lack of Super-epicness isn't all that important. It's much smaller scale, but great fan service. As deep as you get into Halo, I'm suprised you didn't get this one right away. You'll probably pick up on a lot of little things Bungie threw in there...
