Dawn of the Dead remake is a gem. The remakes don't get much better than that.

I'd go so far as to say it's much better than the original.
It is a bit better. But I'm not a fan of runner zombies. As cool as they are, I like shufflers more.

EDIT: Despite my Icon, I have not yet seen the movie about Che Guevara. Need to hunt down that DVD.

I actually heard it being called the British Gran Torino.
The premise is similar - old guy hunts down troublesome gang(s), basically - but it plays out rather differently.
Yeah, Gran Torino, you guys should watch it.
Seen it. Loved it.

Best science fiction movie+book combo ever.

Also.. and sorta spoilery I guess, but..

Pionering sure, way ahead of its time, of course, best science fiction movie? not even close.

Way over rated though, its not even Kubricks best IMO.

The Descent: Part 2

One word comes to mind - flat.

I think it suffers on a few points compared to the original and you can almost look at it like The Matrix sequels, where the first one was stronger on its own and a sequel did nothing more than wear out its welcome.
It's not bad, but, right off the bat you're going to be disappointed because the chick is already out of the freaking cave.

So much for that superb melancholy of the first film, right!?
Well, it does that throughout the film. There is too much confirmed hope and not enough sense of complete dread and doom.

Some of the effects are pretty good, and other times it's as if the director was looking the other way when the cameras were rolling. (plastic boulders moving in unison as if they are one sculpture. stiff looking dummy bat-people getting pummeled on the cave floor; a 1980's quality "falling-down-an-endless-pit" effect)

On top of that, we already know about these things living (or "un"living) underground. We already know a cave can have tight spaces.
You could tell they were just trying to copy a lot of the scenes of the first film, yet just couldn't capture what was really great about it; they never managed to top it.
The sequel doesn't really hold up as a stand-alone film either, as there is too much reference to the first.

The ending was unexpected but about as necessary as the rest of the movie.

I could go on and on, really (I noticed it had a different director).

Having very little luck with sequels these days.

On the plus side, I saw Red, Quantum of Solace, and Casino Royale, all of which are great (especially Casino Royale).

Casino royale is the best out of that little list.

I've looked forward to Splice since it started creating a buzz at screenings and film festivals and finally rented it this weekend with a couple of friends. I really liked most of it but man, MAN, what a fucking tutorial for how to screw a movie over in its last.. like.. five minutes. From the moment murder/rape baby snatched that other dude up and growled on the roof of the barn it immediately spiraled into UTTER GARBAGE. I'm not adverse to "shocking" endings, but this was tonally completely disconnected from the rest of the film AND the message of the film, and it bent the suspension of disbelief with its magically speed-growing TALKING BABY (that just said stuff to be creepy, really) so far beyond breaking that it looked like the dusty remains of the peanut rings I was eating. I mean jesus christ.

Sadly, that buttyness coloured my overall impression so much that I've ultimately a hard time really appreciating the film. It's like they tested it and they needed more generic horror. Oh well. Lots of it is really good - often beautiful in fact - performances are great and the character dynamics change in really interesting ways that really enforce the themes.

127 Hours.

Just wow... so many things to admire. The truth of the story itself, the astonishing performance by James Franco, the cinematography, the music, the directing - and that's to name a few.

I would also like to add that it's easily the most graphic film I've ever seen.

Not seen it yet, but I have to say, since I saw Franco as Harry in the Spider-Man films I always believed he was poised to become an acting force to be reckoned with. His acting in Spidey is bolder and somewhat comic bookly coarse, but it's still somehow very subtle regardless. His interpretation of Harry trying desperately to project pride and confidence (that isn't there) when speaking about mantling his father's expectations is quietly brilliant I think.

So many actors has stuff in them that never gets to come out, though, so it's awesome to see him get a more substantial thing to work with. I definitely look forward to watching it, and I'm gonna try to catch it in the cinema soon.

I knew he had talent way before the Spiderman movies, for example he was great in the James Dean movie IMO.

I think actors who genuinely have the prowess to pull off a show-stealing performance just need the right movie to showcase such talent; like it's their defining moment. Heath Ledger had it with the Dark Knight for example - even though he was brilliant in a lot of other movies before that.

@SimonM7- Have you seen Tristan and Isolde( I think that's how it's spelled)? Franco is the lead in that and it's really pretty good, imo. Like a medieval Romeo and Juliet...

Recently watched Battle: LA, typical 'meh' movie really.

Good cinematography, interesting alien designs, cliché subject and plot but you don't go in expecting Inception so its all right.

Review: Wouldn't go see it again however would recommend it if you want to go out with mates and chill at the cinema.

I'd be willing to just enjoy it more for what it is if there weren't some great ideas buried beneath it all. It actually could have been great if more consideration was given to the story, but it winds up being sorta douchey and pretentious in even trying to have a message. Baby Doll is so shockingly sexy though. Holy shit.

Movie is probably garbage, and I kinda expect that, but I was not expecting any character development whatsoever, nor a well told story either.

I just want eye candy to the max and super hot girls, that Sweet Pea oh my.....
