I just thought if anyone's about to jump on it or started playing it recently we could share experiences with it here. It's such an open game, stuff happens all the time that is virtually unique to that player's experience. It'd be fun to compare.

It's pretty ridiculous that my little notebook has more than twice as much space on it as my desktop. Dammit.
I'm really impressed with my ability to play the moodier parts of this to be honest. I'm usually a gigantic baby with all semblance of horror, but I actually find the creepier bits oddly compelling here. I think it's because you know you can eventually resurface and shoot dudes in the face to even things out, and also because you can usually identify when you're going into some sort of horror pit beforehand and gear up properly.
So far anyway!

But sorta yes. I fired it up, immediately noting that it looks a bit wonky now. Played it a little bit, maybe half an hour, then quit and grabbed the mod. Replayed from the beginning again, as was a requirement for the mod to work 100%.
I don't really want to play something significantly different from the original game most of the time if the original looks okay, which was the case with Crysis so I played vanilla that, but Stalker benefits from the mod in even official patch-like ways in addition to simply looking more like a contemporary game than necessarily going bananas with the visuals.

I did the same thing - played for a couple hours then started over with the mod.
It's easy to appreciate it after playing the vanilla game; everything is improved either subtly or drastically.
I do appreciate the clean look of the game without the mod, but true day and night cycles was a big clincher and it actually affected the gameplay.
Alright, back in Loner camp again after having just sorted the scientist mission in the secret laboratory. About to set out on adventure once more; a long trek to meet the doctor at Strelok's hiding place.

On top of that, there was very little difference to how you would play during the "day".
It turned out to be one of the many things that were promised early on in the games development which was never fleshed out by release date.
The Complete Mod pretty much remedied every shortcoming of the game that people were looking forward to, on top of adding those
snazzy graphics effects from Clear Sky.
Of course, at its core it's still the same game. I don't see it changing people's minds about liking STALKER or not.

That place was staring me in the face for hours, begging to be conquered, and I finally went in there in pitch darkness with a flashlight and some kind of sniper rifle.
Hid behind the bank, sniped the guys at the gateway, snuck in, took out a crows nest, then climbed up and sniped all I could see from there.
I don't even remember what I found there, it just felt good to be able to do it. Maybe it was part of some mission
That was with the mod of course.
edit
now I'm getting all psyched to try out Clear Sky
Do you know if nightvision makes you easier to spot, by the way? I feel like I'm noticed more easily with it on, but I could just be imagining things.

Do you ever wonder how, with all the bandages you need to carry around, bullets are able to get through at all?
I swear at times I should have been waddling around like Maggie Simpson in her snowsuit.

While you can drop things it's faster to just use them up because you can just hump the mouse button like a sexy bunny, but the rather bizarre result of that is that you use up bandages instead of dropping them. I can just imagine this dude stopping suddenly somewhere, promptly stuffing his face with 25 loafs of bread, wrapping his entire body in bandages, chugging an energy drink and then shooting off over the hills.
