I'm playing this game right now. Been playing a fair bit of it already to be honest, but I'm a right slow poke when it comes to open world stuff, faffing about way more than necessary.

I just thought if anyone's about to jump on it or started playing it recently we could share experiences with it here. It's such an open game, stuff happens all the time that is virtually unique to that player's experience. It'd be fun to compare.

Yeah, a lone abode, a sanctuary where you don't constantly have to fend off the screaming horde that seeks out threads on a game to post about how little they care about it and how it's a stupid stupidface. :O

I still need to finish this game, I really have a problem with actually finishing games these days, especially open-world games, I still need to finish;

STALKER including it's 2 expansions
The Witcher
GTA IV - The Ballad of Gay Tony
Red Dead Redemption
Fallout 3
Fallout New Vegas
Metro 2033
Assassin's Creed 2

Guess I will need a year off if I want to finish all of these...

I'm actually not downloading it right now, but I sorta want to. I need to make some HDD space. I don't know why, but I'm still rocking less than 200 gigs on my workstation/gaming rig.

It's pretty ridiculous that my little notebook has more than twice as much space on it as my desktop. Dammit.

I keep wanting to switch factions, but I don't really have a full grasp on what faction stands for what yet. I've been doing some missions for the scientists and they gave me this sweet suit that sorts radiation for me and injects regen stuff automatically, but they're also kinda creepy with their "capture and study" approach. I mean we've all seen Alien.

I'm really impressed with my ability to play the moodier parts of this to be honest. I'm usually a gigantic baby with all semblance of horror, but I actually find the creepier bits oddly compelling here. I think it's because you know you can eventually resurface and shoot dudes in the face to even things out, and also because you can usually identify when you're going into some sort of horror pit beforehand and gear up properly.

So far anyway!

Oooh, I thought you meant "did you install the mod and then start playing right away, or did you take a shower.. make coffee.. go for a run..?" :D

But sorta yes. I fired it up, immediately noting that it looks a bit wonky now. Played it a little bit, maybe half an hour, then quit and grabbed the mod. Replayed from the beginning again, as was a requirement for the mod to work 100%.

I don't really want to play something significantly different from the original game most of the time if the original looks okay, which was the case with Crysis so I played vanilla that, but Stalker benefits from the mod in even official patch-like ways in addition to simply looking more like a contemporary game than necessarily going bananas with the visuals.

lol.

I did the same thing - played for a couple hours then started over with the mod.
It's easy to appreciate it after playing the vanilla game; everything is improved either subtly or drastically.

I do appreciate the clean look of the game without the mod, but true day and night cycles was a big clincher and it actually affected the gameplay.

Finished a thing for a deadline today, so finally feel comfortable playing a video game again! Yay! Actually typing this from Steam's browser. :)

Alright, back in Loner camp again after having just sorted the scientist mission in the secret laboratory. About to set out on adventure once more; a long trek to meet the doctor at Strelok's hiding place.

Plumb; what did you mean by true day/night cycle? What's the difference between vanilla/complete in that regard?

IIRC, in vanilla STALKER, night was so light you could hardly tell it was supposed to be night at all (Chernobyl effect? I don't know).
On top of that, there was very little difference to how you would play during the "day".

It turned out to be one of the many things that were promised early on in the games development which was never fleshed out by release date.

The Complete Mod pretty much remedied every shortcoming of the game that people were looking forward to, on top of adding those
snazzy graphics effects from Clear Sky.
Of course, at its core it's still the same game. I don't see it changing people's minds about liking STALKER or not.

So you couldn't actually use night as cloak when you infiltrate places? Because I do that all the time with Complete.

I don't recall, but I'll never forget finally getting some decent weapons and taking on that military compound (or whatever it is) just down the road from where the game starts.

That place was staring me in the face for hours, begging to be conquered, and I finally went in there in pitch darkness with a flashlight and some kind of sniper rifle.
Hid behind the bank, sniped the guys at the gateway, snuck in, took out a crows nest, then climbed up and sniped all I could see from there.

I don't even remember what I found there, it just felt good to be able to do it. Maybe it was part of some mission

That was with the mod of course.

edit
now I'm getting all psyched to try out Clear Sky

Actually now that you mention the military compound, they totally give you a mission to get into that place unnoticed during the night, so I imagine you must've been able to in vanilla aswell.

Do you know if nightvision makes you easier to spot, by the way? I feel like I'm noticed more easily with it on, but I could just be imagining things.

I've never noticed either way. It probably shouldn't though.

Do you ever wonder how, with all the bandages you need to carry around, bullets are able to get through at all?
I swear at times I should have been waddling around like Maggie Simpson in her snowsuit.

Haha yeah. Yeah I constantly get "encumbered" in it. I usually eat like 25 loafs of bread though and I'm good. Weirdly enough.

Eating 25 loafs of bread in real life would have quite the opposite effect :P

Yeah exactly, this dude seems to go by the out of sight out of mind and out of my inventory school of thinking.

While you can drop things it's faster to just use them up because you can just hump the mouse button like a sexy bunny, but the rather bizarre result of that is that you use up bandages instead of dropping them. I can just imagine this dude stopping suddenly somewhere, promptly stuffing his face with 25 loafs of bread, wrapping his entire body in bandages, chugging an energy drink and then shooting off over the hills.
