Its easy to see what the game is doing,in shooters specially third person like Gears when you get close you have the option to punch the enemy or do whatever the game offer like chainsaw it for example,here you will have the option to actually engage in a combat style situation where you do some combos and what not,I think its the way it will play,in the trailer you see the main character kick some enemie and do a backflip really fast and here you see him do kinda of a combo and a finisher.

I think it will have a melee combat system too like Bayonetta but not entirely focusing in it or not as deep,it will still be a shooter at its core but with the option to kick ass up close too,I can see how I will play it in my head and its very promising and different than anything Ive played in terms of shooters.

I quite dont see how is that doing it wrong.

Hop into the Reach thread and read why people think the assassinations in that game are pointless.

It's a context sensitive animation that you lock into while people are shooting at you from all sides. Melee needs to be quick so you can keep moving in a cover based shooter. If standing out in the open is even viable in your "cover based shooter", your cover is pretty meaningless.

Here, the speed doesn't seem like that big of an issue, and the melee combat, especially animations, seem far more interesting.

Seems a lot more routine at first, that is until he exits cover for the first time.

Depending on the different range of moves you can use to engage an enemy with your guns, I can see this game being pretty solid. I like the range of movements available to the player, and if my assumption is correct, based on past games this guy's been involved with, there's quite a bit more surprises in store with regards to what the player can do.

It's a demonstration clip btw, meant to showcase the various mechanics and how to play the game.

Raptor, some people need more to see what the game is trying to do, thank god I am not one of them LOL.

In most games, the only melee you can do is a simple punch punch knockouts, end of the gun hits, thats pretty much it.

But in Vanquish you can stylishly go close and do some typical japanese over the top martial arts attacks and quickly stylishly evade and start shooting.
And considering the suit form changes when in different modes like superjumps, slides...etc. it is awesome, I do like that when you go into overdrive momentum the back of the suit starts to release steam LOL
Stylish overdrive!

But I know exactly what the game is trying to do and I appreciate it alot, however I dont know how much of the melee is involved.

I'm definitely digging this game. The visuals look a lot better in that gameplay vid, but I do have to keep in mind that it's a very low res video (which obviously masks any kind of aliasing, messy textures etc).

I'm definitely loving the artstyle and the gameplay looks like a ton of fun as well. I don't care much for Bayonetta, but this one is looking mighty tasty so far!

Animations going in and out of cover need some serious work though...

It's basically japanese gears of war with stylish, overthetop melee combat, and a few extra tricks up its sleeve.

I think when we are given a more in depth section of gameplay from a specific level, people may end up finding it to be much more impressive.

I'll never forget this one important thing. Everyone, close to everyone at least, didn't think very much of Bayonetta when we got early looks at it. Many thought it was just going to be a new dmc clone with a few gimmicks here and there that wouldn't amount to anything special.

I'm not really getting any kind of 'Japanese' vibe from it though (which is probably why I'm liking it so far...hehe)...

Also, I wish this game had active reload like Gears. I really love that mechanic and it saddens me no other games have 'borrowed' it from Gears.

Really? No japanese vibe? Perhaps you need to see more then of it then. I'm already getting a very strong vibe along those lines, and I suspect it will only grow stronger as they demonstrate Vanquish at E3 to their heart's content.

The way he kneel after he finished that robot at the end of the video looked really badass

All the animations of him have that stylish thing goin on,I keep thinking that you know how games like Halo you are this soldier with superhuman habilities well in here it seems that you will be able to be like that you will be doing all the stuff you are suposed to do with that suit,its not only there you will be it,I dont know if I explain myself here not that Halo is bad but Masterchief is a badass but you not feel like a badass at all well to me anyway,just by this video I already know I will feel more badass than in Halo.

Note:

Im counting games where you are ina super suit,I didnt play Crysis I dont know how powerfull you feel in there but I think it doesnt count because its a FPS and you dont see those animations really well.

I don't know, I doubt it. Bayonetta, yes...that just screams 'crazy-weirdo-Japanese-developer'. This game just...doesn't. ;)

Regardless though, the game's looking very cool which is all that matters really...

I think the only truly japanese thing here is the bit in the trailer where he picks a missile out of the air with his hand and chucks it at a mech. The animations are all.. I dunno.. out of Wet or Stranglehold.. or those Matrix Max Payne mods.

I think there's a lot of potential here in that it's Resident Evil 4 filtered through an american design process with Gears, then handed back to the original creator of RE4 to build more stuff on top of, but apart from the boosting seen briefly in the trailer there's nothing tangibly japanese added yet, in my opinion.

But yeah, the missile re-direction in the trailer is a subtle hint at a larger wave of silly awesome to come, I think, and though my initial reaction (at a choppy version of the video through a flash player my computer throws up from when running) was that it seemed played absolutely straight... IIIII'm not so sure anymore. I think Shinji Mikami can't really help himself but do some pretty funny stuff with it. It probably won't involve a post credits music video (I LOVE YOU BAYONETTAAAAAAARRRGHHH!!) but more like some Hideo Kojima-esque self referential silly.

I mean don't take my prior comments the wrong way, I'm still hopeful about this, and I do mean it when I say it's the first *thing* that even has the potential to top Gears as an excercise in expertly tuned mechanics in the cover shooter genre. The gameplay video posted earlier sobered me up some after the OMG-ness that was the trailer though, and I do have pretty major concerns right now.

Some would say the heavy emphasis on mechs and fights with robots, alone, are the japanese influence.

Or how the main character stylishly does what seems to be a copoeira type flip up into those awesome melee moves.

For one, there's just no way I'd ever take a look at this game and assume it was made by an American dev after seeing the melee combat animations. Perhaps before the melee, sure, but certainly not after.

I am a little worried that the cover system might be moot. He was taking a LOT of fire, and it didn't seem to matter. I realise that it may be on an easy setting or God mode, though. I also didn't see any intelligence by the AI. No flanking, or even taking cover or strafing. I'm not saying it's not in there, but I need to see much more to make that decision. The animations seem a little awkward in the timing at this time as well- a bit too quick/weightless.

All that said, I am actually very hopeful for this game. I'd love for it to be a good one, and I really am digging a lot of the design I'm seeing. Now if they could just hire some REAL voice actors...
