Where is VR gaming at nowadays?

With the release of the Valve Index back in June the mild interest in VR gaming I already had really grew. I've always had a mild interest in VR gaming but I never really dived deep into it as I've always seen it as quite a gimmick and the games seemed very gimmicky to me. I wonder what it's like nowadays.

For the prices that are being asked for VR kits I really would want it to be a good experience with great games that are playable without a huge hassle. I've watched a couple of YouTube videos where people play VR games and despite the games looking fun I don't really know if I would enjoy those for longer periods of time.

I played Beat Saber on somebody's PS4 the other day and I really quite enjoyed myself but the cables made it look like a huge mess and while it was fun I really wondered if I could enjoy playing games in VR for a longer period of time.

The Valve Index seems to be a nice jump in quality in terms of specifications but has the platform matured enough over the time where we can expect this to be a sort of final product? I've always considered the Oculus Rift as a sort of beta of the platform, the HTC Vive had some nice ideas with the wireless headset and I'm sure there are some other examples of this kind of features.

I feel like there are a lot of games out there that have been implementing (optional) VR in their games and I feel like in some cases it could genuinely make the experience better but for the price you pay for one of the headsets I would expect most of the games to be playable in VR in a way.

I feel like VR gaming is a matter of loving or hating it without any inbetweens but I'm not sure if that's still the case at the moment.

Loakum Ugh….scratch that previous comment. The upcoming Game of Thrones video game is a F’in mobile phone game. Why can’t they came an open world GoT game, like Witcher 3 or God of War? (> 3 Months ago)
