The Wii has been out for a couple of months and it's already spawning things of utter, delightful beauty.

Dewy's Adventure.

Watch that video and just leave it to hop to the next one, which is a gameplay trailer.

Just wonderful. :O

Ridiculously cute (was almost sick a lil bit), but a total rip off of Okami.

Looks interesting none the less.

Cause you jump around up and down levels collecting items, killing enemies.

Thats a platform game to me, it has rpg elements aswell, but i would class it as a platform.

What would you call it ?

To me it's the most clean cut Zelda influenced game around. So I suppose I'd call it action/adventure or action/rpg.

I think based on your vague description, Okami could be a ripoff of Billy Hatcher, in which you hop around platforms trying to bring back day in a land engulfed in eternal night.

In turn there's plenty of games that have used the dying tree motif, including Secret of Mana (if I remember rightly) and even Wind Waker.

I think I was just a bit offended since the comparison and accusation of ripoffness here is so far fetched and unfair, but it has to do with me really loving what I see aswell.

So I guess it's okay if you reckon it's a ripoff of Okami, I'm just gonna try to heal. :)

Haha yea your responce was like I said your new born was ugly or something .. :S

It's funny because i see Zelda very much a platform game at heart also, People rarely agree with me.

But then what is the difference between an Adventure game and a Platform game, as most platform games require you to set off on an adventure of some kind.

Tomb raiders is considered a platform game yet that is an adventure game also, is it not ?

You can't even jump in Zelda.

Platform games stem from the Mario model of having platforms suspended in the air which you scale to reach your goal. Moving platforms and obstacles obstruct your path and bottomless pits are usually associated with them aswell.

People have vagued up the term by bunching it together with the fact that platform games these days usually have stories and objectives, and the worlds are non-linear, but that doesn't mean that platform games in essence have anything to do with the more story-driven genres out there.

Jolli considers Kameo a platformer too. He doesn't seem to realise how important a dedicated jump button is to the genre. I think having a contextual jump system automatically makes it something else, personally.

.
I thnk you can .. I remember jumping from stone to stone in WW and jumping whilst i attacked, plus you can use your grappling hook to get up onto platforms (so the jump button becomes kind of pointless)....

Hmmmm

I don't consider Kameo to be a platformer, but i don't consider it far from it either.

We aren't talking about Kameo here however, Okami from the last time i checked had a jump button.. so did Zelda (to some extent).

So if a platformer is simply associated with a jump button and platforms suspended in mid air, both Okami and Zelda would fall into that classification.

As for Kameo i remember using the armadilo to shoot over a gap and then change form to grab hold of a wall, so yet again Jump button isn't needed.

Zelda doesn't have a jump button.

The whole argument is forfeit anyway because there really aren't any similarities between Okami and Dewy's Adventure even if you turn Zelda into a platformer. Let's move on.

Well, considering the *availability* of platformers on Xbox systems, it's about as close as you'll get I suppose.

It's not though, super isn't.

Leaving this behind us so to not derail the "topic" completely. I ordered Phoenix Wright 2 and Hotel Dusk earlier this week and should get them on monday. Anyone spent any time with those?

Nope, more like an adventure game (like Zelda). The lack of platforming enviroments/level design and a real jump button are a dead give away. Zelda does not have a jump button either, it has a context button that allows you to jump when it detects you being close to an edge.

Crackdown is more of a platforming game than Zelda or Kameo.

Platform game, or platformer, is a video game genre characterized by jumping to and from suspended platforms. It must be possible to control these jumps and to fall from or miss platforms. The most common unifying element to these games is a jump button, but there are exceptions; other jump mechanics include swinging from extendable arms, as in Ristar or Bionic Commando, or bouncing from springboards or trampolines, as in Alpha Waves. Games where jumping is automated completely, such as The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, fall outside of the genre.
Wikipedia picks you out for special exclusion, Jolli. :)

I forgot to mention about SSX Blur; the music works like it does in Lumines. You get layers added to it depending on how well you are doing. That's why there's notes flying around the characters in some instances in that character trailer I poster earlier.

Here's a higher res version of that, by the way:

I got Justice for All and Hotel Dusk in the post today. Only just started on the further adventures of our favourite ace attorney and beyond being a wonderful reunion with the characters it's obviously a super game aswell. :)

I hope everyone with a DS has played the first game, because it could be considered a crime against humanity not to. Against your own humanity I mean.

Web radio site Finetune has put up an optimised Wii page at:

www.finetune.com/wii

Slap that in your Wii opera browser and get pointy with the Wiimote.

Pointless? On the contrary, very point-ful what with the.. wiimote and stuff!

Perhaps a bit useless if you've got a PC though, but for me with my home theater sound system plugged into my consoles and not my PC, aswell as having the wiimote beside me for easy access it's pretty neat actually. It's all very intuitive and it looks snazzy aswell!

Oh and it's a brill site regardless of how you visit it.
