XBox 360: Clearing Up Misconceptions
After having seen all the talk and chest beating in the last few days I thought I’d put up a F.A.Q. like post that will clear up some of the more common misconceptions that people seem to have about the XBox 360.
XBOX LIVE
Will I be able to use Xbox LIVE if I don't have a hard drive?
You won't need a hard drive to enjoy all the benefits of Xbox Live Silver and Gold with the Core System, but you will at least need a Memory Unit in order to save your Gamer Profile. If you plan on downloading a lot of content (vehicles, maps, game trailers, demos, etc) you'll want to get a hard drive.
Will I be able to download content from Xbox Live without a hard drive?
Yes, with the 64MB MU you will be able to download content. However, gamers that choose to download lots of content will want to get a hard drive for capacity and flexibility.
Damn it, without a hard drive standard in every box developers won’t be making any downloadable content.
Wrong. If Wipeout Pure on the PSP can get downloadable content that fits on the standard pack-in 32MB memory card, then even “core” users with a 64MB card will be able to enjoy downloadable game content.
Why are they making me buy another Xbox Live subscription?
They aren’t. Even if you signup with LIVE the day before the 360 ships you’ll be able to transfer your account over for a 360 Gold Live membership.
Is XBox LIVE Marketplace just an excuse to nickel and dime us on stuff that should’ve been in the game anyway?
In the history of LIVE only a few games have been guilty of using XBox LIVE to unlock stuff already on the game disc (We’re looking at you Return to Castle Wolfeinstein.) But to think of Marketplace as just a place to buy micro-transaction stuff is wrong. The word “marketplace” is a poor way of saying “LIVE Download Center.”
Microsoft has already shown the ability to stream/download everything from music and game trailers; to the ability to download game demos. No more buying OXM at $9 bucks a pop whenever there’s a must-play demo on the disc. There’s even word that downloadable (with a fee) TV shows are planned.
What kind of XBox LIVE is included in both the “premium” and “core” packages?
Both come with free LIVE Silver accounts, which gets you full access to the Marketplace (and all game related downloadable content) and any special “free” multiplayer weekends when they arise. Also, BOTH packages come with a 30-day XBox LIVE Gold trial subscription which gets you everything Silver packs plus… all the multiplayer gaming your eyes can handle.
Can I enjoy XBox LIVE Arcade (which is built in) without a hard drive?
Yes, though you are limited in how many games you can buy/download.
THE HARD DRIVE
Developers won’t take advantage of the hard drive if it’s not standard!
Wrong. Developers such as Bethesda have already gone on record saying that while Oblivion doesn’t require a hard drive, “We would recommend you get one if you have the means […]” Expect many games to use the hard drive for caching files if it is detected, or quick checkpoint saves.
Why is the hard drive so expensive?
The hard drive accessory isn’t your ordinary hard drive, it’s actually a laptop drive which makes it easy to carry over to a friends house! Oh, and because Microsoft is trying to recoup some of the costs of other parts that are being given to you well below cost (like the 360’s videocard). The high price may also be a way to make the “premium” pack look like a great deal. In any case the higher price seems to be here to stay.
Without a hard drive I won’t be able to enjoy custom soundtracks!
Wrong. Custom soundtracks aren’t driven by the game but rather by the X360 OS. Using the system itself you can stream music off any USB compatible device (or a networked PC) and play said music with any game. A recent demonstration of Kameo was punctuated with the developer pressing the guide button and starting song off of his connected iPod.
Is there anything good about the hard drive being detachable?
Yes, now if you suffer a hard drive failure you can just swap out a new one without having to send in your whole system for a repair. If you want to take a saved game profile over to a friends house but don’t have a memory card you can just unhook the hard drive and put it in your pocket.
BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY
Will I be able to play XBox games on my new 360?
Yes, if you have a hard drive attached to your 360. Even though it doesn't ship with a hard drive, the "core" package can do BC if you attach a hard drive to it.
What games will be supported?
Beyond Halo 2? There is no official word, but expect the biggest sellers and fan favorites to make the cut. Despite whatever the number of supported games on day one, expect more support to be added via XBox LIVE.
THE 360 SYSTEM
Damn it, I want the “premium” package but it only comes with HD cables and I don’t have a HDTV. Why are they making me buy separate cables?
They’re not. The Xbox 360 HD-AV Cable outputs component or composite video. In addition to having RCA audio ouputs, there is also a Toslink-style optical output for digital audio.
Does the “premium” package come with the Media Center remote that has a 10-key pad or the shorter version that only controls the XBox 360?
The non-10-key version of the remote, but even the “shrimp” remote will work with a Windows Media Center PC. In fact you don’t need a remote at all to use the Media Center capabilities of the XBox 360; as a regular controller will do the trick.
The controllers cost $85 f*cking bucks once you factor in the plug-and-play kit and a battery pack!
No they don’t. Wireless controllers cost $50 bucks and will work just fine with regular AA batteries, or even a set of Walmart branded rechargeable batteries. The plug-and-play kit comes with a battery pack & USB charging cable, and only costs $19.99. Extra battery packs are $11.99, and all battery packs are rated for 30hrs according to marketing pamphlets.
Why is the Wireless Network Adaptor so expensive?
You mean, why is the adaptor the same price as the Xbox wireless network adaptor? Unknown, but it is a very small package wrapped in a cute white shell and that seems to have worked well for Apple and its products. It isn’t a required purchase however, as you can still plug in an Ethernet cable or just buy one of the many non-Microsoft branded wireless adaptors that currently hover around $70 on average.
Isn’t Microsoft increasing their expenses by having to produce two different kinds of units?
No. Other than the chrome disc tray, both the “premium” and “core” XBox 360s are identical in every way and shape… because, at some point in the future even “premium” users might want to upgrade to a new hard drive that features more disc space.
