GSY Review PS4 Xbox One PC

Resident Evil 2 is back in a true remake and time has come for our final verdict. Sadly, all video content is still under embargo, which means you guys will wait to wait a couple of more days to see the final game in action. For now, feel free to read our thoughts about it and to leave a comment if you feel like it.

Verdict

Though obviously less surprising than Resident Evil 7 2 years ago (how times flies...), Resident Evil 2 is an excellent way to dive into an all-time classic without having to turn to retro gaming. Gameplay-wise, this remake is very close to RE7 but in third person this time, but it still manages to keep the sweet flavor of the 90s, with its B movie storyline and characters, its typical progression with a bit of backtracking and a bunch of bosses, and of course its enclosed environments taking you from Raccoon City's police precinct to the sewers and Umbrella's secret lab. Old gamers will undoubtedly be happy to go back to RE2 and to see the different changes made to this remake while newcomers will be able to discover one of the best games of the franchise. Isn't it what all remakes should be about?
  • On the plus side
  • To be able to play a cult classic in the best possible conditions
  • Now that's a true remake!
  • Very nice graphically...
  • The atmosphere
  • Not just a copy-paste of the original
  • Several playable characters
  • The A/B scenarios are back (A/B)
  • On the downside
  • Gameplay is lacking when faced with quick and smaller enemies (dogs)
  • Environments are too static
  • … though we'd have liked a bit more colors
  • Leon's "What the... ?!" gets old pretty quickly

Do you mean A/B scenarios are back, as in AB Leon AND an AB for Claire too? Or is it 2 different campaigns for the 2 characters in general i.e one fixed version of AB?

Either way I don't mind. :)

Based on what I've read in other reviews (except IGN's since they're useless lol) You choose your starter character and play through scenario A. Which unlocks the other characters scenario B. You can then do the reverse to unlock all scenarios. Do that and you unlock hunk and tofu.

Awesome, so just like the original then. I thought the developers said around E3 that there was just a single A and B playthrough for both Leon and Claire because the little changes in the original game with Leon A/Claire B and Claire A/Leon B were very minor.

This is excellent news. Just got my Collector's and installing now. ^_^

jmd749 @nostradamus: Yes, Talos Principle is one of those overlooked gems of a game. For my 2nd play through I started it in VR using my Oculus, havn't got very far. I'd highly recommend it to any puzzle fan (12 Hours ago)

nostradamus something? F. right off. no can do, mein Führer. (12 Hours ago)

  • nostradamus

nostradamus some pacing and life. I don't mind the puzzle zones trigger some quiet time, all fine and dandy, but the awfull back and forth in the whole island withou a melodic sound? even crafted in the game or (12 Hours ago)

  • nostradamus

nostradamus first thing i did for the "no music" The Witness was give a middle finger to Blow, and use MP3 or youtube to stream so classic composers, and give the dull game world (every one is dead how original) (12 Hours ago)

  • nostradamus

nostradamus and its funny as hell how thsi game has some organ/gregorian chorus (picks up in the key moments) for the soundtrack. it's sublime (these are the dudes who made sesious sam?! L.o.l.) (12 Hours ago)

  • nostradamus

nostradamus the dev's walking sim "now you get it" to appreciate a good puzzle. Still love The Witness, but i like direct simplicity more. (12 Hours ago)

  • nostradamus

nostradamus it even has the whole Tetronimo thingy going on. its way more barebones (mixture of its own game or a mod even) but its a breath of fresh air to take a puzzle game that doesn't make you suffer through (12 Hours ago)
