GSY Review PC PS4 Xbox One

Resident Evil 2 is back in a true remake and time has come for our final verdict. Sadly, all video content is still under embargo, which means you guys will wait to wait a couple of more days to see the final game in action. For now, feel free to read our thoughts about it and to leave a comment if you feel like it.

Verdict

Though obviously less surprising than Resident Evil 7 2 years ago (how times flies...), Resident Evil 2 is an excellent way to dive into an all-time classic without having to turn to retro gaming. Gameplay-wise, this remake is very close to RE7 but in third person this time, but it still manages to keep the sweet flavor of the 90s, with its B movie storyline and characters, its typical progression with a bit of backtracking and a bunch of bosses, and of course its enclosed environments taking you from Raccoon City's police precinct to the sewers and Umbrella's secret lab. Old gamers will undoubtedly be happy to go back to RE2 and to see the different changes made to this remake while newcomers will be able to discover one of the best games of the franchise. Isn't it what all remakes should be about?
  • On the plus side
  • To be able to play a cult classic in the best possible conditions
  • Now that's a true remake!
  • Very nice graphically...
  • The atmosphere
  • Not just a copy-paste of the original
  • Several playable characters
  • The A/B scenarios are back (A/B)
  • On the downside
  • Gameplay is lacking when faced with quick and smaller enemies (dogs)
  • Environments are too static
  • … though we'd have liked a bit more colors
  • Leon's "What the... ?!" gets old pretty quickly

Do you mean A/B scenarios are back, as in AB Leon AND an AB for Claire too? Or is it 2 different campaigns for the 2 characters in general i.e one fixed version of AB?

Either way I don't mind. :)

Based on what I've read in other reviews (except IGN's since they're useless lol) You choose your starter character and play through scenario A. Which unlocks the other characters scenario B. You can then do the reverse to unlock all scenarios. Do that and you unlock hunk and tofu.

Awesome, so just like the original then. I thought the developers said around E3 that there was just a single A and B playthrough for both Leon and Claire because the little changes in the original game with Leon A/Claire B and Claire A/Leon B were very minor.

This is excellent news. Just got my Collector's and installing now. ^_^

  • nostradamus

nostradamus massive downgrades coming from the staples achieved w/ the Halo 3 sandbox/physics, with Dice/BField it should never be a trade-off, ony thing they should be trading its engine if it isnt up 3 the job (20 Hours ago)

  • nostradamus

nostradamus Halo keeps being this Sonic title bait & switch "will their next title be able to Look up par with its current gen counterparts"? Never. Even Halo 4 who was pretty good on Campaign suffered from (20 Hours ago)

  • nostradamus

nostradamus tech? I dunno, go get some insight of Activision (the good input, not the misogyny), all they COD devs make evident generation leaps tech-wise. Do they keep being the same core IP? I think so. (20 Hours ago)

  • nostradamus

nostradamus so Halo must be thet bottomb of the barrel FPS to keep its identity. Add some negligible subsurface scattering reflections or some other tech only possible now and call it the day copy/pasting the ol (20 Hours ago)

b0vril yea but, would it be halo then? (21 Hours ago)

nostradamus engines. I mean, If you can have a PS3 Ratchet & Clanck that looks like a vaseline ps3 game, and a PS5 Ratchet&Clack that looks like a goddamn next-gen game, why can't Halo Evolve - Ugly FPS Seal™ (1 Day ago)

  • nostradamus

nostradamus Halo Infinite sure is one ugly damn game. Pretty obvious nothing is going to massible change if the Ip doesn't die and start from the ground up with another publisher/dev that doesn't retread the ol (1 Day ago)
