You know what really wrecks this for me? The names. I mean, sure in a fighter like the original MK trilogy i could buy it because the story emphasis was so low, but when they try to be all serious with a revenge plot and naration and shit...i cant help but chuckle a bit when the characters are named Scorpion and Sub Zero :) Like, was Scorpion a ninja wiht a clan, but still called Scorpion? Sub Zero is worse though, totally.

Wrong. This is ridiculous. Clouds of stupid pathos above this installation is just huge no less. Nothing to do with the atmosphere of the first titles. One should still be a teenager to like this. Seriously.
i'm not a teenager anymore but still like what i see. the last good mortal kombat with that unique atmosphere was ultimate mk. it's like with castlevania, finally they're coming back at home, it's like video game heaven to me. :)

Ha, you almost made it sound like a legitimate complaint.
MK was ruined for me the moment they went and stylized everything. I liked MK because it was real life-like but now it's worse than a cartoon. And the brutal speed of the first 3 games or at least the 3rd one is gone too but I don't blame them since they had to convert to consoles. Anyways, if they managed to get realistic art direction and managed to make the combat fluid again I'd reconcile. So I'll pass.
And the reboot of the movie isn't making it better. Yeah, the second movie sucked but at least it was still a martial arts action. Now it looks like some detective story. No, thanks. I preferred the creepy and atmospheric style of Paul Anderson.

that notorious short movie is kinda like the mk-equivalent of the street fighter movie from 90s but afaik thats just an unofficial "fan" project and not canon.

I wouldn't really call it a 'fan' project. Actors like Michael Jai White and Jeri Ryan are pro-actors who wouldn't just do a 'fan' project. Maybe it's a demo for a serious production but it's obvious that it might easily become the next MK movie.

I'm pretty sure they mean the digitized actors and the graphics, not the realism of the gameplay :P

yeah .but even so this is even more real(although 3d).
skeletons being render when smashing bones,body's being chopped to pieces,real time damage to models.
the only real complaint people could have are these corny(but thats what its meant to be)cut scenes.
This is not more realistic, this looks way stylised. Sure, the sprites in MK1, 2 and 3 are low resolution but they are in fact real people. Doesn't get much more realistic than that :P
I'm not syaing this looks bad or that i prefer the digitized graphics, this however looks in every sense more stylized and less realistic and shit like the x-ray attacks does little to add to the "realism" ;)

Not just graphics, the storyline was believable, dark, artistic (not so soap opera oriented like it becomes) and original back then NOT ridiculous. It's not about look, it's about feel I'm talking about. Personally I started to dislike series since the MK3 installation with its' cyborgs, inflated heads, animalities, clown make-ups, etc.
I liked MK for its' atmoshere, its' style not for its' violence or poor gameplay. Unlike teenagers.
They can shove that x-ray thing somewhere real deep. Can you imagine how annoying it will become after seeing it over and over as you play? It looked cool in Romeo Must Die but having that in a game all the time? I hope there'll be an option to turn that off or it will end up like the slow-mo crashes in Burnout Paradise which got annoying and made the gameplay worse.
