GSY Video PC PS4 Xbox One

Here are finally a bunch of DiRT 4 videos that we could not share any sooner as we were only sent a PS4 code yesterday. We also have a PC version, but strangely enough, contrary to some of the US reviewers we've seen playing on this platform, it will not be unlocked before the game is officially available in Europe on Friday. To see if the disappointing visuals of the PS4 Pro version we have captured are much better on PC, you will have to be a bit more patient and we are sorry about that. We can't give you our impressions on the driving sensations with a wheel either because the only wheel we have works on pc, not on PS4. What we can say though is that the driving model seems to be much more arcadey than in DiRT Rally, even when you deactivate all the available assists. The previous game, which was meant to be more realistic, was actually more demanding with all assists than this fourth installment is with none.
Update: 6 videos added, showing a more powerful car, which actually makes gameplay more interesting.

Glad I'm not the only one who thinks the handling is so different than Dirt Rally. A friend of mine is trying to convince me that I'm imagining things, but I just can't get into Dirt 4 - I don't like the handling at all.

No, the very first thing I did was turn all of the assists off and such, manually.

They are all PS4 Pro videos... We have no base PS4 left to capture footage anyway.

It makes no difference. DiRT 4 with no assists is more forgiving than Rally with all of them on.

Perhaps, but most things I've read in other places are very positive about Dirt 4. And some people who are very good at Racing and Rally games also said that they thought that Dirt: Rally was a bit too hard for their tastes, even though they still loved the game.

Either way, the reason I asked INDIGO if he/she had played Dirt: Rally on PS4 or PC was because some developers change the difficulty according with the target audience, more difficult on PC and less difficult on consoles. So maybe that's what happened.

Like I said, we don't have a base PS4 anymore to compare, but considering how visible the aliasing is on PS4 Pro, it's hard to imagine it worse on base PS4.

I'm not saying it's a bad game. I'm just saying that those who claim it's just as demanding as DiRT Rally are delusional. :p

I'm preparing PC videos and gameplay is the carbon copy of the PS4 version. As far as I can remember, the console version of DiRt Rally was just as hard as its PC counterpart.

Then Codemasters dumbed down the difficulty or controls to appeal to a wider audience. The less frustrated players get, the more chances that they will keep playing the game.

A shame CM made this game more casual than Dirt Rally but it was expected.

As I've said before I hope Dirt Rally 2 can take advantage of some of the technical improvements I assume they've made in this game.

From what I understand, you can put the game into Gamer mode or Simulation mode, and then you can adjust all assists WITHIN that mode. If you manually turn all assists off and it still feels dumbed down, then perhaps you're playing Gamer mode with no assists.

Every review I've read says that in Simulation mode, it is the same physics as Dirt Rally, with improved tyre simulation and something about the chassis physics... can't quite remember, but all of them say it's Dirt Rally physics with some subtle improvements (from a Sim perspective)

Then every review is wrong. We are in sim mode, have been since the very beginning, with all assists off and it's much easier to handle than DiRT Rally with all assists. Considering how unhappy with the physics DiRT Rally fans are on Steam, maybe journalists simply don't know what they're talking about (which wouldn't be a first). :)

One example of the (many) negative reviews:
I am writing this review as a long time sim racer. Therefore, I am going to focus on things like FFB, physics, and graphics performance more than car selection, soundtrack, etc. If you are a keyboard or controller player who enjoys more arcade/action-oriented driving games, this review probably won't be helpful for you.

If you're a sim racer with a nice racing rig and you enjoyed Dirt Rally a lot (as I did) then be prepared for a huge disappointment in the physics department. You may have heard that you can now select between a gamer handling mode and the sim handling mode. Of course, I went straight for the sim mode, all assists off.

The problem immediately becomes apparent when you start a rally - even in sim mode, the levels of grip are highly exagerrated to the point where even the RWD vehicles require extreme control inputs to induce controllable slides. The worst of this is represented in the gravel/dirt stages (Australia, Wales, MIchigan and Sweden.) For some reason the gravel is just hyper-grippy. For example, while trying the Group A Subaru, a nice 4 wheel drift around a hairpin (which works brilliantly in Dirt Rally) results in the car "digging in" immediately and setting you up for a brief oversteer followed by heavy understeer. In many cases a handbrake input would start a slide but then the car would bog down almost to a *stop* before taking off again.

The tarmac physics (only the Spain rally is tarmac) are a little better, and in *some* ways an improvement over Dirt Rally. The cars feel a little more communicative through FFB and react slightly more naturally to things like weight transfer. However, the grip levels are a little too high once again, requiring relatively heavy and sudden inputs to induce a controllable oversteer or drift in most cars. It's not as much of a mess as gravel is, though.

The game is also quite a bit more demanding graphically on your CPU/GPU than Dirt Rally. At Ultra settings, my 980 Ti + 3570k @ 4.6ghz running a 1440p Gsync display gets down into the 40s at times in Wales, where the dense forest seems to be a FPS hitter. If I drop down to high it's much better. I don't necessarily count this against the game since it still looks pretty good at High settings, and presumably there's room to grow as newer and better GPUs come out.

I know racing sim physics is always a point of contention among sim racing enthusiasts. I've already seen people saying things like "well, it's just different, give it time." In Dirt 4 though, I can say without question the physics model (which was pretty darn good in Dirt Rally) has taken a SERIOUS down turn here. As such I can only leave a negative feedback for now, until such time as Codies takes another crack at it.
Like I said, it's not a bad game, it's more demanding than DiRT 1,2,3, Showdown, but if what you're looking for is something as realistic and unforgiving as DiRT Rally, you're in for a big surprise that's all. I think DiRT 4 is to be taken as the Forza Horizon of the DiRT series, while Rally is Codemasters' Forza Motorsports.

Oh man. Very mixed then, as that's not what I've been seeing at all.

Thanks for sharing. I'm definitely going to pick it up as my main issue with rally games has been addressed (My Stage, no more learning stages back to front which is not very rally-like), but will be more wary of expectations now...

Recce and recce drivers is a big part of wrc rallying though. But from a gameplay perspective it's definitely nice with dynamic stages.

Yes true, I was hoping they'd allow limited recce before go-time, but even if they don't at least this is closer to real life than driving a stage 10, 20, 50 times to get it really sussed. That's for circuit racing
