GSY Video PS4 Xbox One Switch

We may not have been part of the lucky reviewers who were sent a copy of Starlink: Battle for Atlas, but a friend of ours went ot his local retailer and put his money down for the Switch version, which we quickly captured to share a bit of footage with you all. As you'll see, aliasing is pretty visible in dock mode, but the game seems to be smooth and the couple of planets we've seen look nice. In portable mode, the game looks better, but the small screen does not always make it easy to see things clearly, which bugged us a little bit during a puzzle (that we obviously didn't record as we were playing in handheld mode). In case you didn't know, the Switch version has a pretty big advantage over the PS4 and Xbox One versions as it features the Starfox crew.

I'll wait and see how the other versions of Starlink perform. Starfox isn't enough justification to get a handheld version of the game, unfortunately.

This is one of those cases where you need to choose between visuals and performance or content. I know it has a lot of content, but the rest of the game suffers for it. I treat it the same as when someone buys the base game, but not the DLC expansion for it - for whatever reason. Of course, it's great to have additional content, but that depends entirely on what the person values most.

This is exactly like when some games have content exclusitivity deals with certain retailers or in certain editions. Like having an extra story arc with some missions + other bonuses like extra costumes in a Legendary or Ultimate edition, but you pay $20 more. Or in the case of retailers, you don't get a $10-30 discount you would get if you bought from another place.

I have watched both versions of the game here on Gamersyde, and the hit to quality would bother me a lot more while playing the rest of the game, than I would be pleased with the Star Fox content. But I'm not the biggest Star Fox fan, I'm sure that to some people that's the better version. But not for me.

I actually quite liked most of what I've seen of Starlink - minus the toys' gimmick, it looks great and it's the sort of genre that's been almost completely ignored by AAA developers - most of the ones that are being released, are indies like EverSpace, Star Citizen, etc. Even games like Ace Combat 7 are a dying breed, unfortunately.

toelessfoot Right. I think programmable shaders were adopted fairly early on consoles (xbox360/ps3) (4 Days ago)

MrWhite @toelessfoot: Well, only recently they have been. I think this is the first gen I've seen where PC's are playing catch up. Not through hardware power, but through development cycles (4 Days ago)

  • toelessfoot

toelessfoot Yeah I think innovations on the console side are taken up more quickly by PC than vice versa because consoles are really lead platform for everything (4 Days ago)

MrWhite At least for most gamers. Similar to when everything went to pci-e (5 Days ago)

  • MrWhite

MrWhite I think we could be seeing a dramatic shift in PC hardware where it'll be essential to own both an SSD and a next gen card with the api's to use them. That also would probably require new motherboards (5 Days ago)

MrWhite If a game is built from the ground up to take advantage of that, though... (5 Days ago)
