Xbox 360

Rainbow Six Vegas has finally been released in Europe this week, so it's about time we finally released our traditional first 10 minutes video. For the moment it will only be available in 640 resolution, showing the first level of the game (in "realistic" mode), a level with some striking similarities with the second one of GRAW. Strange way to begin a game named Rainbow Six: Vegas, but why not. A 720p version will be online tomorrow when the game will head to Blimblim's HD capture hardware. Nevertheless even if not everyone will like its style, Rainbow Six Vegas is definitely one of the most important title of the Xbox 360 system.
Update: 720p version online!

Just bought this game myself. Must say I'm very impressed.

GoW didn't really do it for me, but this is great. Although realistic is *really* hard :P

It reminds me that I forgot to say these 10 first minutes were done in realistic mode =)

Realistic is hard but immensely satisfying. Dying means you did something wrong rather than the AI cheating.

But the AI could have cheated and that's why you died :p

I'm slightly dissapointed by it. It looks good some of the time, but GOW spoilt everything, the smooshing up walls works so much better in GOW. I'm not convinced by the infinite life thing either.

Also, the AI even on Realistic seems a bit poor, like GOW it's easy to exploit how slow they react occasionally. I've had terrorists stood next to me doing nothing at all :(

I've also got stuck compltely twice requiring me to restart. It just doesn't seem like Rainbow Six to me, it seems just like a more pretty GRAW. I also miss my planning :(

It's true that the AI is a bit slow at sometimes. You shoot a guy but the man who's standing like 2m further doesn't even see that his mate's been shot.

What's up with the vsync? Is that in the game or is it a side effect of the recording?

It's more like it's first PC counterparts than ANY of the Xbox versions... so you should be happy.. and you miss planning? Well get at it, you get a map and usually more than 1 or 3 ways into a place... plan away.

"I'm not convinced by the infinite life thing either."

The idea is it keeps you in the game longer, instead of getting hit early on in the game.. then getting to the end areas and only being able to get hit once more and your dead sort of thing so you have to restart and NOT get hit at all throughout the whole thing just to have a chance later on...

I think it's way more satisfying than having a static health bar, it also eliminates health packs and other things of that nature, which are actually way more unrealistic than a slowly regenerating health.

Unacceptable, I'm starting to get really pissed off with all the v-synch issues on the 360.

lol the end was hilarious. The shooting seems immensely satisfying, especially going for head shots with that silencer. Blood splatter was very realistic and the atmosphere was tense. AI is no slouch. I might buy this over Double Agent. Thanks snoopers for the effort, you're very good at the game.

I didn't notice it... and I never notice it in any other games... that's probably cause I don't really give a damn.

All the v-sync issues? You'r implying there are more than one? As far as I've heard it just has an issue with v-sync, it just doesn't have it.

I see minimal to no tearing on my monitor from my 360, in fact I've NEVER noticed or looked for it, so I guess I'm a lucky boy but I don't see it on my friend's crappy tv or his monitor either.

Sadly the developers have used a hybrid v-sync technique in Rainbow Six Vegas to fix the framerate problems from the single player demo (which didn't have any v-sync issues at all). It means that the game is v-synced and tear-free until the framerate drops and then v-sync is turned off leading to the screen tearing seen in the video. It's quite bad at times, usually when there's lots of particle/smoke effects or more than two enemies onscreen but it can also happen in small empty rooms which is a little alarming considering very little is actually being drawn. This game uses the Unreal Engine 3 like Gears of War but unlike Epic's game, Rainbow Six Vegas' single player mode is absolutely rife with tearing. You learn to live with it but it does take some of the polish off the game and means that in my eyes the demo version, even with its framerate issues, is technically superior. Considering how vastly superior Gears of War is to Rainbow Six Vegas graphically, it's surprising that the game has any v-sync tearing at all really.

On the postive side, the single player mode's graphics now use anti-aliasing and look pretty nice bar some naff low-res textures that remind me of the Xbox versions of the games. A definite improvement on the overrated Ghost Recon: AW. Also the multiplayer mode has slightly toned down graphics but no tearing as far as I can tell. Personally I'd rather have had the entire single player mode's graphics toned down to that level if it meant a smooth running game. Utterly fantastic game though but tarnished slightly by the same v-sync issues that plague most of Ubi Soft's other Tom Clancy games.

When will we get an Xbox 360 game that has amazing graphics and DOESN'T have any tearing or slowdown at all or isn't the hardware powerful enough?

I prefer this game over Gears. Gears is good and all, but doesn't really have that bit you can't quite put your finger on. For me Rainbow Six Vegas is that game, I'm loving it. The gear, the way it's really hard at places.

Haven't noticed any tearing in Vegas, using hdtv. But some slowdowns when there are explotions or other debris flying around.

Again, I'd rather play a game that runs 30fps with v-sync 90% of the time and drops vsync when 30fps cant be upheld than play a curly turd of a game like The Godfather that runs at 15fps flat because it cant do 30fps.

Oh and Kameo is (still) a fabulous looking game that has rock solid 30fps and Gears is a game that didnt tone down for multiplayer (like this game), but almost the opposite.

Then again I remember playing through GRAW that didnt have a single moment where it didnt run like crap and tear. This is a huge improvement.

I've found something else I really dislike, which is annoying as I was really enjoying the begining of the Calypso level. I'm playing the game through on Realistic. On the calypso level, after rescuing the first hostages you have to enter a gaming hall up stairs. There are 3 or 4 terroists knocking about, no problems there. But on the right there's a room with 2 in there. Open the door and kill them no problems. A little later, just to surprise you or pehaps annoy the hell out of you. The game spawns a terrorist in that room. The room with only one exit! come on, that's a doom trick, it's not very fair to have all pathways locked down, only to have someone shoot you in the back of the head.

I do find the V-sync a little annoying, it's weird that GOW is so much nicer V-Sync wise, I only really saw it in the cut scenes and when the little screaming monsters first attack you in the first act on Hardcore.

I also kind of hope the tone down the damage the shotgun can do from such range, you can be mostly behind cover, and a T 20 meters away can fire once and kill you, I guess it may just be because of realistic.

There's absolutely no tearing in the multiplayer mode (but then it has slightly toned down graphics) but the single player is rife with it on my Samsung LE-26R41BD HDTV. In fact, I'd go as far as to say that it's as bad as GR:AW, maybe even worse. The single player demo had no tearing at all though but it looks to me like v-sync has been sacrificed for a smoother framerate and anti-aliasing for the final game.

What is jarring is that Gears of War uses the same engine as R6V and yet it looks vastly superior graphically - it has much more detailed textures (some of R6V's would embarass an Xbox!) and better lighting yet has very little tearing. I've a feeling that R6V perhaps hasn't been optimised to the same extent as GoW or perhaps the developers just aren't as talented as Epic.
