GSY Video PS4

Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration does not only feature 4K resolution on PS4 Pro, but ads 2 other graphics settings to choose from. You can either play the game with more details at 1080p/30fps or enhance the framerate (still at 1080p), by simply unlocking it. As you'll see, neither solution is absolutely perfect, but it's nice to be given the choice.

Thanks for the videos, especially for the framerate analysis.

Those videos show a lot of encoding artifacts though (no offense).

Luckily though, there is a solution to improve this, you can find it in the forum:

colour me unimpressed. the enhanced quality mode looks no where near as detailed as uncharted 4 on a standard ps4 with half the power..

Also the 60 mode seems to have a lot of trouble staying at 60. some bits are just choppy, they should have made it be a 60/30 switch instead of it trying to run at like 45

I got a ps4 pro today and the biggest difference i noticed between 1080p 30 and 60 mode was anisotropic filtering. In the main menus just look at the carpet in lara's room and there is a big difference. I wish enriched visuals mode had better AA though

I've read the forum thread you posted, I thought the same too at the beginning of this year, but after a couple of days' research, I too found out that while H.265 and VP9 are vastly superior encoders, they're really time consuming on even the most powerful of PCs even for 1080p - 4k is infeasible right now.

I also would love to see mostly H.265/VP9, 10-bit color, FLAC audio (at least from a 5.1 source, if a 7.1 one isn't available) videos not just here on Gamersyde, but on the internet overall. Though I realize we're a good 10-20 years from that happening. H.264 is just too easy-of-use, fast and extremely convenient right now, plus a lot of devices still don't support H.265 properly, let alone VP9.

PS. What truly irks me though is how almost everyone only cares about video quality and the audio quality could go to hell - not saying you or Gamersyde are like this, I mean everyone else. It's truly sad watching 4k videos with 50-100 Mbps bitrate, but with only 2.0 Stereo audio at low bitrates - like all of Digital Foundry's 4k videos, and it will even be a paid service.

Digital Foundry's Rise of the Tomb Raider PS4 Pro vs Titan X Pascal sample's settings:

Duration: 2:09
Size: 823MB
Video settings: 3840x2160, 59.94fps, 53.3mbps h.264
Audio settings: AAC 2.0, 160kbs, 48000Hz

https://www.digitalfoundry.net/2016-11-07-free-sam...

I'm sure people who work with music/sounds (sound engineers, composers, etc), audiophiles, or just love music in general also feel this way. I have a really nice 7.1 system, but outside of a few movies and even fewer TV shows in Blu-Ray, most are 5.1 audio only. Only games fully take advantage of it, but not always.

I can even notice the difference between FLAC and MP3 (at 320 kb/s) with some of the soundtracks that GOG.com provides for many games. Even though I really like Digital Foundry, 160 kb/s Stereo is just taking the piss!

I've read the forum thread you posted
Why haven't you posted your answer on the proper forum thread then ;)? Let's discuss this in the forum thread, not in a Tomb Raider video comment section ;).

Sorry, man. That completely passed over my head, I don't think I have ever posted on the forums, though I could be wrong. Not because I don't like them, but it just never happened.

Sure lol. It runs at 58 fps average, that is freaking amazing for a console.

As a matter of fact, when you post in the comment section of a video, you _are_ posting in the forum, see:

toelessfoot Right. I think programmable shaders were adopted fairly early on consoles (xbox360/ps3) (4 Days ago)

MrWhite @toelessfoot: Well, only recently they have been. I think this is the first gen I've seen where PC's are playing catch up. Not through hardware power, but through development cycles (4 Days ago)

  • toelessfoot

toelessfoot Yeah I think innovations on the console side are taken up more quickly by PC than vice versa because consoles are really lead platform for everything (4 Days ago)

MrWhite At least for most gamers. Similar to when everything went to pci-e (5 Days ago)

  • MrWhite

MrWhite I think we could be seeing a dramatic shift in PC hardware where it'll be essential to own both an SSD and a next gen card with the api's to use them. That also would probably require new motherboards (5 Days ago)

MrWhite If a game is built from the ground up to take advantage of that, though... (5 Days ago)
