Well, i can only speak for myself, but i think they generally do a good job with the stories and characters. That combined with the shenmue-esque exploration and minigames just makes for a fun time. Though i can certainly understand why some people might not like them as well. If you can't get in to the yakuza drama aspect, i don't think there's much for you here.
But basically, it's a story driven action game, and it tells a kind of story that i've never seen in a game before. If that sounds appealing to you, i'd suggest checking out maybe Yakuza 4 or, if you aren't picky with the graphics, Yakuza 2 on PS2.
