Video Xbox 360 PS3

Better late than never, we can finally show you the retail version of 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa in action. It's been a bit more than a week since the game's release, and those of you who have yielded to the call of the world cup must have noticed that it comes with many improvements over Fifa 10, but also with a lame new penalty kick system. The gameplay has been polished so controlling the ball and shooting feel closer to the real thing, which is great news for Fifa 11. There are still a few annoying things like when your player gets pushed by the AI and the referee does not even blink, but overall, it can't be denied that EA's team has done a good job. The video will show you different extracts from several matches, so you can haver a sneak peek at some of the official stadiums available in the game.

Someone can't score penalties.....

The new system isn't "lame", just takes a little practice, not difficult.

It is just unnecessarily frustrating and difficult. Oddly enough, that's a thought I share with all the reviewers. :p

Good thing if you like it though. I'm not saying it was a bad idea to try to change it, but clearly, to me they could have done something that felt better.

But all you do is, wait for the composure bar to be in the middle, hold down shoot for a short time, hold the aim slightly longer, and let go, he shoots, he scores/it's saved, really not that much more complicated than the original system, they just added a small layer of timing and thus skill to taking penalties, which makes sense with the fact penalties always decide England's world cup matches :)

Maybe "lame" is a bit too much, but it clearly does not do it for me. It is just not fun. :)

But then again, I have always hated the way penalty kicks are handled in video games.

No stick to lame, if that's what you feel that's what you feel, too much carefully worded PR crap in reviews/previews these days, gone are the days when reviewers could actually say how they feel without being afraid that the big bad publisher will get them fired if they dare to critique a game* :)

*unless of course that game is ArmA 2: Operation Arrowhead, in which case your ass is mine, and not in the good way ;)

If you haven't done the penalty training then you have yourself to blame, makes it nice and simple. My personal technique is hold as you power up the shot, then off the stick for a sec as he runs up, then another short press in the direction as he makes contact with the ball. Works very well.

i'd love fifa11 to have a new engine. It really is about time they had intro's, cut-aways, and replay's, running smoothly. I think this engines been tweaked as much as it's able

I like the new pens allot, took me 2min to figure out and it more fun to do now than it used to. There are lots of glitches in the game though, extra time when you're wining etc.

Commentary still a little off in places but overall it looks like a slightly nicer and smoothly version of Fifa 10. It's on my LoveFilm list but will wait for Fifa 11 to buy another one, or possibly PES if they impress and win me back.

Overall an improvement (especially the shooting) but still too much emphasis on AI pressure and high-speed end to end football and the feeling that a lot of game situations (especially shots on goal) are scripted. On WC difficulty and above countries like Vanuatu have phases in which they pass and dribble like Spain, yet they're just incapable of pulling off one decent and believable attack and either cross it from every position or try to dribble the ball into the net.

The new penalty system is unnecessarily complicated imo. I don't understand why they can't just make it completely manual.

I disagree about the penalty system; it's much better than the one seen in the previous FIFAs because it actually requires skill.

I agree. It's unnecessary. Interesting for the first few times, but that's about it. And not even realistic. Why not make the gauge/swing bar determine where you shoot the ball? While I like the trick shot/stop, this is still vs. AI keeper... Are we supposed to believe that it's not scripted?

I dont think a penalty should require 3 seperate (yet over lapping) stages of input for a single kick of the ball. Yes you can practice penalties but try explaining the system to a new comer without the aid of the circle which is in the practice arena. It is a nightmare....

The system does have its good points though such as being able to dive after the ball has been kicked. I think the main problem is the gimmicky composure meter.

I would agree that the composure meter isn't really required, but the implementation of stutter shots and, in particular, the goalkeeper mechanics work really well.

can't stop playing the game and eventhough most ppl are using 5* teams, I think the online world cup/battle of the nation is great. gameplay also has improved once again. and no offense but I love the new penalties because it isnt as damn easy and restricted as it was before.

I had my first penalty shootout in the world cup final v Italy, I was actually desperate to avoid penalties because I know how tricky they are now so I tried frantically to score in extra time, which to me makes it better as before you knew you were almost guaranteed to at least get all your penalties on target, I won the shootout 3-2, my 2 misses were both over the bar, never happened in any previous Fifa shootouts, so to me that means the new penalty system is a win, because it's a challenge.

Grimbarian penalties are not supposed to be a challenge of technique.
Essentialy taking a penalty is kicking a ball from 12 yards with no physical pressure from other players, a child can do this.
In real life you are disputing in your head whether to put the ball that extra yard in the corner, or do you take a slower approach and try and fool the keeper with your body shape. As a goal keeper the situation is this... Do you pick a direction and commit to it or do you wait for the player to kick the ball and then try and react. All of these elements have been incorperated in world cup fifa and are great. The pressure meter spoils the party by making things over complex, you are already under pressure because you know the game is at stake if you miss.

There is skill and talent to taking a great penalty, if there wasn't England wouldn't always go out through penalties. Other countries are very good penalty takers and players, it's a skill and I believe that Fifa World Cup puts added skill into it. Not anyone can take a good penalty, if you believe that then surely you don't watch enough football or play it.
In Fifa 10 there's pressure that sure you might lose the game through penalties but this comes down to losing the game through luck more than skill. You are under far more pressure if you have to play well during the penalty taking.

Haha, are you kidding me? It's as much about technique as it is about keeping a cool head - especially in top-level football.
