As usual, July is pretty quiet in terms of new releases but it doesn't mean we have nothing new to share with you. Etherborn comes out today and we were sent a review code a couple of weeks ago or so, which allowed us to prepare a quick review of this puzzle game by Altered Matter. As usual, it is accompanied by a few videos but we chose to only show the first 2 levels not to spoil too much of the game.
Verdict
The idea behind Etherborn is a pretty good one. Despite the fact that what you have to do is very simple on paper (find the spheres which will allow you to activate the switches), the way the developers play with gravity can make it quite tricky to reach the end of a level. It will obviously depend on what kind of player you are, but it's an interesting mechanic which holds the promise of very challenging puzzles. Sadly, the limited number of different levels (5 only) prevents the game from reaching its full potential. Sure there's a New Game + in which the spheres are more difficult to reach, but it does not compensate for the absence of an acceptable number of levels. Because of that, it will take you between 2 to 4 hours to complete which, considering the price tag, is a tad short really. The game is still pleasant to play, but it keeps reminding us of what it could have achieved had it been more satisfying in terms of content and it's very unfortunate. Not that it would have been a truly memorable game if it had featured more levels and the addition of new mechanics/situations, but it would have at least been a lot more recommendable.
- On the upside
- The concept is good
- Relaxing experience
- 60 fps as a bonus
- On the downside
- Way too short (5 levels only)
- Camera angles do not always make it easy to jump or drop down
- Not especially memorable

I'm thinking of games like Void Bastards and other small indie games. I understand if you guys are busy, on vacation, didn't get a code or just don't want to spend the money on a game you don't plan on playing any further. It's just a suggestion since this month and maybe next there won't be many high profile releases. Of course, this is the best time to clear some backlog.
