Trailer PS4 Xbox One PC

Classic game from SEGA is being brought back to life with hand-drawn graphics and a new soundtrack. Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap, the third episode from the series, was initially released in 1989 on Master System. Now the title is coming back to life thanks to a facelift from Lizardcube and will be published by DotEmu. The platformer will hit PC and consoles but no release date yet. OMFG!!!

I love the artsyle and the fact that it reminds me a little bit of Shovel Knight is just lovely. Love the 5 characters, each with their different abilities and the humour. This is right up my alley so much that it feels like they're making this game specifically for me.

I need this now!

PS. Where do I insert money to make this game release now?!

Looks nothing like the original, which i loved as a kid, and is the only Master System cart i still own today :P

Doesn't looks bad as such, but as an old fanboy whiner ass, i'll be hard to please.

This isn't Wonderboy. At least not the one I'm most familiar with, and probably the most famous one.

That might explain why some people can't recognize this version if they never saw Wonder Boy 3: The Dragon's Trap on the Sega Master System or GameGear, the game had a mechanic in which the main character can transform into other animal forms after being cursed.

From what I could gather after a quick research, it seems the other games in the series - there's 10 games in total, this remake would be the 11th game - didn't have this mechanic and you just played as a human being. So most people wouldn't recognize it as Wonder Boy.

Below are the links to the GameFAQs page of the Wonder Boy franchise, 2 images of the cover and also a nice review of Wonder Boy 3: The Dragon's Trap on the Sega Master System.

Yeah, I had to edit my post initially after I went off to have a look at the original Dragon's Trap. I didn't even know that one existed. The one I always remembered, because it was also an arcade game, was the original where you had the skateboard and threw banana's. It was banana's, wasn't it?

I'm not particularly fond of the style of visuals being used with it either. It seems everyone (mostly indies) these days just go with that simplistic, cartoonish vectorised drawing look to it to try to make it look as if its original and quirky. It's been done to death. It reminds me of flash games. The thing that stands out between them all is how well they animate the sprites.

There are a lot of different takes on Wonder Boy. Yes, there's the Adventure Island type if deal with the skate board and stuff, there's also the Monster Lair game which is more like a shmup. Then with Wonder Boy 3 it turned a little more towards RPG and continiued from there on. Wonder Boy in monster World is one of my favorite games on the Genesis/megadrive actually. Great series of classic games all in all.
