Since 6679 DaysThe cross allows for more accurate direction, up, down, left, right which is more important for 2D fighters.
Have you never noticed when using the d-pad in menu's how it will jump to the right or left when navigating up and down.
There are 3rd party 360 pads which have the cross shape d-pad, but like griftgfx says if your into 2D fighter's that much i suppose you would get an arcade stick.
I don't wana splash out on a new controller just for one game, so i guess i will have to put up with it.
