Sounds like Forge may do a lot more than we originally thought... and it seems they might also possibly have dedicated servers.

In one of his posts, he clearly alludes to the fact that there's a HUGE install base of Halo fans out there, plenty of whom play the MP, and that a MP-only Halo would do well because there's *already* a large audience for it. To try and claim that if Halo had been MP-only and as a result would have failed is to completely circumvent what he was talking about.

And if there was any confusion I think your summary and Grift's posts clearly reinforce his intent. So everyone else can just... drop it.

Btw, considering the cash cow that WoW is, I wouldn't be shocked if Bungie has a Halo game, with subscription model, in the works. Even at something like $10/mo multiplied by "only" 2M online Halo fanatics is almost $250M a year. A game like that with a 3 year cycle (with frequent updates inbetween ala WoW, maybe some online expansions) and MS could turn Halo into a multi-billion dollar franchise every generation (Halos, Halo RTS, Halo online).

Personally I want to see the FPS/RTS bridge. Although a game like WWII online or Planetside... but that didn't suck... could be very cool as well.

Maybe the other "half" of forge would be doing something like that because it definatly shares similiraties to and RTS/FPS so I guess its not that far fetched and idea.

I wouldn't get excited about dedicated servers folks, I don't think that's what the guy meant when referring to other server-side features.

I can only hope I'm wrong naturally :D

Why would they need dedicated servers with a 16 player limit? There typically are enough peeps hosting servers with quality connections that there isn't a huge bottleneck of servers. Only 6% of Halo MP gamers need a really fast connection so that everyone can be on a 16 player server. And most people can serve 6-8 fine.

Also, the Forge comment was taken out of context. When he said that was only half of it, he goes on to descrive what else it can do, namely "commander" like gameplay. It is a spawn editor, but it is more, a realtime one you can play in.

That would be awesome. I definitely believe this would be something to see on the next-gen Xbox. The reason I say this is because:

1. By the time it launches hopefully vast strides in networking code will be made to allow for the streaming of data, to allow for high res maps with lots of players.

2. A larger mandatory hard drive would allow for expansions to be installed/ downloaded without the hassle of deleting things or buying a new one.

3. Released within the launch window it could have the impact of the original Halo as a killer app (if done right of course).

Instead of quests, you would have the option to take on missions with friends and engage in large scale battles. You'd have to receive some sort of payment from the missions to buy weapons and what not. I think with the style of most MMOs it'd be pretty easy to add missions and story, so you'd have a ton of last appeal.

Hopefully they'd rather do something innovative like that rather than just put the Master Chief in Gears of War .

Not particularly more so than many other games in 720p. Looks pretty good to me, but then again, I thought the beta was pretty passable. There are elements other than visuals (and besides marketing, which is insane) that cement this game's success.

The beta struggled with 12 players in match-making, granted, with a much smaller pool of users to work from. Still, lag was pretty noticeable in BTB in Halo 2. I think dedicated servers for BTB would be brilliant personally.

What he mentions is stuff we've already known about Forge for a while now though--I wonder if there's even more to it, or if that's the general idea. You're right though, reading that in context (and not reading more into it) it suggests that Forge is exactly what we've been hearing for a while now.

Well, except there are no rigid rules in Forge, so far as we all know. As it stands, it's more of a sandbox/playground environment (like Garry's mod), which makes it difficult to take seriously as a compeditive game mode. If there are no restrictions placed on "commander" resources, the idea of a structured RTS hybrid can pretty much be thrown out the window. It could still be fun, but it'd require a bit more work to actually make it compeditive.

The Gravemind pic in the manual is from the Halo Coffee Table Art Book, in which gravemind looks more like a badass and less like Audrey. You can't see it, but his teeth are encrusted with various species' skulls.

Someone calculated that the thing in the E3 trailer is about as big as that circular structure on the outside of the Halos. Which helps the theory that the Forerunners buried a Halo in the Earth's surface - which is also supported by the ARG videos and the comic that takes place in Africa.
