Alan Wake Thread - Brand New Trailer!!

There is more money to be made on Xbox 360, and it does not take a rocket scientist to figure that out.

And with Sony finally getting part of their act together in relation to quality 1st/2nd party exclusives, the Xbox 360 is beginning to look more and more like the poor cousin if they do not keep up. Keeping more games exclusive to the 360, that not even PC gamers can get, only raises the Xbox 360's profile in the eyes of gamers.

Spending the last 2 or 3 years of development, focusing on the Xbox 360 version of Alan Wake, allows the developers at Remedy to optimize better for the Xbox 360. And quite frankly, after seeing Uncharted 2, fully optimized and running on PS3, Microsoft is going to have to start making a clear choice as to which is their game platform of choice: the PC or the Xbox 360. I don't for one second think the PS3 is that much more powerful than the Xbox 360 (the Xbox 360 has the better RAM configuration, not to mention the better GPU . . . the PS3 on the other hand, has the better CPU), however, with Sony and their 2nd parties able to focus all of their development attention exclusively on one version of PS3 exclusive titles, and Microsoft and their 2nd parties having to divide their focus across two platforms, the PS3 is easily beginning to pull ahead in terms of graphic fidelity of their games. Make no mistake about it, I have no doubt that Uncharted 2 (or a game like it) could be done on Xbox 360 and look every bit as amazing as it does on PS3, but only if Microsoft made the commitment to develop the game exclusively for the Xbox 360 and take full advantage of being able to optimize the game purely for Xbox 360.

And to be honest, considering all the money Microsoft has invested in Xbox 360, and all the money that they are making out of Xbox 360, were I personally one of the VPs at Microsoft in charge of the games division, there is no way in hell I'd allow a competitor like Sony to make better looking games for the PS3, when I know my hardware can deliver games that look every bit as good, if not better. And if that meant sacrificing the PC games division so that 1st/2nd party titles can get the dedicated focus they deserve, then so be it. With companies like iD and Valve around, it is not like PC gaming is going to die out just because Microsoft shifted it's priorities to where they should have been in the first place - insuring their own game console remains the #1 selling, HD game console, by getting the best product they can deliver to it.

Quite frankly, with Sony beginning to deliver a steady stream of exclusive hits on the PS3, Microsoft has no choice but to cut PC gaming and rein in their focus to the 360. With titles like Killzone 2, ImFamous, Heavy Rain, Uncharted 2, God of War 3, MAG, The Last Guardian, and Gran Turismo 5, Sony's 2009/2010 release schedule looks amazing - this from a person who just a year ago, was wondering if Sony would deliver more than five AAA titles this entire generation. And with titles like Halo 3: ODST, Splinter Cell: Conviction, Alan Wake, Mass Effect 2, Crackdown 2, Halo: Reach, Gears of War 3, and Forza Motorsport 3, it's not that Microsoft does not have an equally amazing exclusive line-up over the same period, it's just that you can look at most of Microsoft games and tell they are not optimized for the Xbox 360 - too many of them are going to PC, and thus do not receive full 360 optimization from the ground up. And until Microsoft changes this, PS3 games are simply going to start looking better and better in comparison, instead of both console's exclusives looking on par with each other.

Yea the PC version is totally going to cannibalize Xbox sales.

I couldn't care less about how much Microsoft needs first (and in this case, second) party titles. Hell, in most cases I could care less if they stopped publishing PC games all together (which they more or less have). The fact is that this game was announced as a PC title, by a PC developer, in a fucking PC magazine. There's no two ways around it: if they do not publish a PC version of Alan Wake, they are going to piss a lot of people off. Now it's always been a numbers game for Microsoft, so it should come as no surprise regardless of their strategy here. They're not trying to make friends in this game, only customers, and loyalty is meaningless if there are several more people to replace your sale.

If they don't publish Alan Wake on the PC many people will feel like they robbed them.. and frankly, since they'll be killing the superior product, they'll be robbing gamers period.

I'm not ready to assume that the game won't ship on the PC just yet.. but there's plenty reason to be skeptical. They have basically killed their dedication to Windows over the last year, which is very disappointing for a PC gamer. They make the damn OS, and they make DirectX, and the Xbox would not exist without either. If they don't continue to provide an incentive for people to support the platform.. we could see development ship in the distant future, back to OpenGL, which will only support their competitors, in both the PC and Console markets.

If they need better homegrown software (and they do) they should work on original content and shouldn't be snaking up software from existing platforms. Windows is a Microsoft platform too.. and they need both markets to remain healthy. They have continually lost ground in the PC market over the last several years.. and without the dominance they have on the desktop Microsoft will suffer.

But honestly.. as a gamer.. who the fuck cares about the business bullshit? All I care about is getting to play Remedy's new game where it belongs, and with the best possible experience it can offer.

Guess what: That's not on Xbox.

Fucking MS. If this won't come to a PC I won't be playing this at all. I am not going to pay more for a inferior version of the game.

From now on we should be angry at any company making games on consoles, heck we'll be even mad at games with low minimal required specs as it means they're inferior products with poor compromises and lack of ambition.

What I said might be harsh but true.

I am not just talking about teh graphics either...

I don't give a fuck if the textures/effects aren't that good looking. I care much more about AA, AF & smooth FPS. I probably even play much more older games than new anyway.

Plus PC version is much cheaper and I don't have to worry about RROD either.

Uh, it is automatically inferior. If you think that the Xbox can push Alan Wake to its limits you're kidding yourself.

That's not really the point either. People are upset because they were told to expect it. So way to totally bend words and change topics to fit a different agenda.

It's not a stretch to assume that the PC version will be the superior version. That should not actually offend anyone.

This, again, is different. Firstly: Halo and Halo 2 did eventually ship for the PC. Secondly: if you look at MGS you will see a distinct change in their output in 2008.

But this whole thing is silly. I'll wait for Remedy to answer to their pissed off fans.. because until they say something this is all speculation.

It would not be unheard of (within the last few weeks, even) for a developer tied to Microsoft to say one thing and deliver another though.

I'm not offended, I'm just laughing at the idea of getting angry at a video game company for dropping a SKU and making up ridiculous arguments to support that idiotic rage.

It's Alan Wake's goal to push the 360, not the other way around. But you're kidding yourself if you believe that somehow PC version of Alan Wake will be different. It'll be exactly the same game, with the same gameplay, mission structure, story etc. Unless you truely believe that somehow flying unicorns will appear in AW PC.

LOL.. so you wouldn't be disappointed if for some wild and crazy reason Halo: Reach were a PC exclusive? You're so full of shit. If the tables were turned here you'd definitely be upset.

Hey all,

I'm a PC gamer at heart (have a Core i7, Radeon 4890, 5.1 audio setup at home) so I do appreciate your concerns.

Unfortunately all I can say at this point is that we're focusing all our efforts on the 360 version and will be making comments in regards to the PC at a later in time.
The sad part is that these guys obviously wanted to make a multiplatform game here. But at least we know they care... not that what they/we care about matters all that much to Microsoft.

No, I wouldn't be, as I have a gaming PC (that I'm playing on faaaar more than all other hardware combined BTW).

Even if, for example, Ubi made suddenly SC Conviction PS3 only I wouldn't be angry at them, I just wouldn't buy that game and wish developers good luck without my money. I have only so much time for games and if Ican't play one of them, it means more time for other games. No need for rage.

GTA4 is a POS regardless of a platform.
Different controls is not an advantage when the game is balanced for the controller, graphics, well that depends on PC but doesn't make content any different (and they're good enough in 360 version for me not to care), the chance of substantial and quality mods is near zero and the price is indeed an important argument and a reason why I play most multiplatforms on PC.

Most absent minded reply to the most hollow statement in the thread. GJ!

@szaromir:

Whatever dude.. I actually enjoy aiming with a mouse regardless of how well "balanced" the gamepad support is. And it's not like gamepads aren't supported on Windows. It's all about the options.

And no, the 360 won't output "good enough" image quality when you have an alternative sitting at home that can do much better.

I also think you misjudge people's supposed "rage." Being upset and disappointed doesn't mean that people are like throwing their fucking TV's out their window.

Though it's getting easier and easier to hate Microsoft Game Studios.. only one person in this thread even suggested they wouldn't play the game anymore. And it's not even like that's necessarily out of rage. Some people just don't particularly care for the Xbox.

This all goes back to an argument that I have been making for several years now. Game companies should not profile their games publicly until they are six to nine months out from release. If Alan Wake just showed up in the public consciousness a few months ago, and was slated as an Xbox 360 exclusive from Remedy, then no one would have any reason to be upset about this news. And outside of the occasional PS3 fanboy who has nothing better to do with his time than grief Xbox 360 fanboys (and vice versa) attempting to downplay the importance of the game, no one would be upset by this news.

As we have seen, a lot can change during a five year development cycle. Telling the consumer four years ago about a game everyone knew would not be showing up for years, is just wrong. Plans change, platforms change and that is life. However, if Alan Wake had initially started out as a multi-platform game and wound up a 360 exclusive, and no one but the developers and the publisher knew about that, then it's no harm, no foul. Microsoft and Remedy probably knew two or three years ago Alan Wake was going 360 exclusive. Of course by then, the cat was out of the bag there was supposed to be a PC version. On the other hand, had both parties waited until the game was much closer to completion, then all the behind-the-scenes business deals which wound up seeing this game as a 360 exclusive would have happened in privacy out of the sight of the consumers. There is no one to anticipate the PC release, as it never would have been announced and promoted (at least not publicly), and there would be no consumers to upset when one SKU got canceled in favor of another.

There are plenty of other pro-business reasons why games should not go public until six to nine months before release (I think I mentioned some in another thread), but for the purpose of piece of mind for the consumer, we have yet another reason in am increasingly long list of reasons, why the current practice of announcing a game as soon as pre-production begins on it, is just a bad idea all around.

In ideal world all HD games should be available on PC/360/PS3 so that anyone who has at least one of these platfoms could have access to them. But then you have business and production side of things and it's not that easy anymore.

Let's see first what game Alan Wake actually is and then talk about all other aspects. It might be like Ubi dropping PC/360 versions of Haze, and when the game came out no one cared about it anymore.
