It's what the Marvel game turned into. Possibly a good thing as well, definitely looking forward to this.

I thought that Marvel game just got canceled and that was it. Nice to see that the team could change things and make this game.

Yeah, I think if the look of Champions is how Marvel was shaping up I wouldn't have been interested as I tend to prefer the more realistic interpretations of the characters.

Champions reminds me a lot of the Crackdown style actually, which should make for an interesting universe.

Yeah, this is Marvel Online. I suppose I'll apply for the closed beta, thanks.

Signed up for the beta because of the promise of action oriented combat, but last time i fell for that one i got the messed up pile of shit that was AoC so i feel a bit doubtful about this, but i still hope, i really do.

Nah I fully expect this to be yet-another EveryQuest. MMO development is in such a sad state of disrepair. I hope Bioware really delivers. As good as WAR is, and as fresh as some of their concepts are, it doesn't stray as far off that path as I had hoped. Ultima Online and SWG are still the two best MMORPG's ever made :)

I can understand that realtime combat would be a problem in MMOs since most of the populace has shitty connections (i mean, i think i have a pretty slow connection with my 10/10 mbit but i know that relatively speaking that's pretty decent). I dream of the age when everyone has like 10/10 tbit so we can play World of DMC without latency issues :P

Keep in mind that most MMO's are built to function at ridiculous latencies. I think in part it's because they have so few servers, for so many people. You also have to expect people to play on very non-localized servers. You might pick a US server if you're in the USA, but you wouldn't for example pick an East/West/Central server.. you'd just go where your friends are or where the population level seems appealing.

WOW functions pretty well for example @ 400+ ms.

Grift: Well that's what i'm saying; since we clearly have a bandwidth issue when it comes to thousands of people with so-and-so connections all meeting on a single server, that might be localized in such a way as to give further disadvantage to some people, that pretty much prohibits responsive realtime action in an MMO setting. Unless you instance it, which kind of breaks the whole concept anyways. So i'm biding my time, waiting for the real deal MMOAG (AG would be action game ;) ), and trying every other MMO releasing along the way just in case.

I'd go easy with such a stetement on SWG.
It surerly had wonderful ideas, and the player-driven economy was great, but the overall game design was one of the worst ever conceived. Mindlessly grind professions is what was all about (I remember macroing Musician in the tatooine cantina all day long to unlock my Jedi) and the combat system was admittedly the worst on any mmo i remember, with melee hitting you from 100 meters and macros for up to 10 abilities made fights a one-button press affair. Not to talk about balance (90% of population went doctor/teraskasi, with 10% macroing grinding for jedi)

Thou, swg was the last mmo to give that sense of freedom tipical of Ultima online, with giant empty maps to build player cities. (I remember having a droid shop with my bounty hunter :)
I'm talking about pre-spaceshipsthing expansion.

Overall i'd say it had an incredible potential, but for me it was the most frustating and alienating online experience ever, mostly due to an insanely flawed (in spots) gamedesign.
Playing with the Jedi, i must admit, has been a thrilling experience, but trying to unlock it (for almost a full year) has been as fun as working in a coal mine.

SWG was basically UO2. Literally, too. When EA Austen was sold to Sony they took the work on UO2 with them and created Star Wars Galaxies. It was only about grinding out professions if you were strictly concerned with being a jedi. I think the new system is pretty lame.

Yes, i know the story behind swg.
And agree that modern mmos lack many of the early ideas. But ideas alone don't make a game. If swg would have been trimmed to have a proper combat system and some accomplishment feeling, it would have been the perfect mmo.

I'm an all-out pvp mmoer, and as such i'm having the best moment in my gaming life since UO with Warhammer.

Back on topic: Champions online could be a good game, but personally i just can't stand the design. I could never get attached to a character like those shown there. Just not my cup of tea.

Interesting. Too bad that the Flagship Studios got on to those problems... Mythos looked great and what I played Hellgate it wasn't bad either.

Yea.. I loved Mythos. A pretty straight Diablo clone, but it was so full of potential. The beta was already excellent. Some Korean company now owns all of the previous work on the game, but who knows if they'll ever successfully revive it. Even if they do finish it I have my doubts that it will live up to its previous potential. It had the makings of the best free game ever.

I understand that this is from the same developer that made City of Heroes too. I got the game couple days ago and I must say it is pretty fun. Character customization is really well done.
too bad the game loses its fun factor after about 2 weeks. I guess Champions could turn out good(I was a lot more interested in it before), but now that DC Universe Online has been announced I'm leaning more towards that one. There can be only one Superhero MMO for me.

Oh well, won't hurt to try the beta(if I get in) out since it's free. Thanks for the link, Isomac.

I resurrected this thread as the game is out soon.

Nemesis idea sounds awesome, I really hope it's as fun as it sounds. Character creation is really well done. Also there is sidekick system which lets you play with higher / lower level players. That feature was really great in CoH. Tentonhammer has quite nice interview about sidekick system here: http://www.tentonhammer.com/node/72477

Rate my champion is pretty nice feature on the website.

The play-test over this past weekend has convinced me of a purchase. The combat has a very fun and flexible feel to it, and combined with the brilliant travel powers makes you really feel like a superhero compared to the stiffness of City Of Heroes/Villains.

I think they might need to balance out the ability to choose powers from any discipline to avoid overpowered builds, but that is what a beta is for I guess.

Nice, I didn't really bother using the character creator too much yet. Most of my characters are created with random button :P Anyway here was my main character: http://champions-online.com/rate_my_champion/45242...

I don't know how long it's still at the site since they will delete all the characters..
