As we said, the game is played mostly in broad daylight, with the crowd working as a "dynamic cover" for Sam. The game's interface helps the player using two itmes: there is a "hero instict" meter of sorts, which allows Sam to see enemies with infrared style vision, and a danger meter which shows how close you are to being spotted. Seasoned stealthh players should be used to features like these. The close combat has been likened to the "Bourne" series of movies and books. The player can only kill mercenaries and terrorists, but can fight and incapacitate guards and civilians.

The physics engine is central to gameplay this time around, you can use items as weapons, block doors with furniture etc. -- some really cool stuff there. Also, the enemy AI is dynamic, so your enemies react to what you do and act differently each time around.
that sounds like ANOTHER disaster, no matter who's making it. i want my good old splinter cell back, not lumberjack sam walking through crowds like assassins creed. also, the idea of using environmental objects as weapons and a more robust close quaters combat system seems like splinter cell is straying a little too far from its roots. splinter cell belongs in the shadows, double agent proved that daylight doesnt work and this is making the same mistakes, the shadow mechanic is what differentiated SC from the likes of MGS and the upcoming crowd-stealth game assassins creed and now its copying from a game thae same company is developing. this sounds far too much like assassins creed for my liking, minus the original character, story, and setting.
You make it sound like this hasn't been planned by these guys from the get go as if they saw Assassin's Creed and decided to copy. I'm sure if these guys are going with these types of mechanics they've thought things through carefully and it isn't spur of the moment type stuff. I like the sound of this. It sounds new and exciting.

What makes you assume the game wont have a good story and setting? This is a new game so sam fisher or not they can do a great job with his character in this game. Looking at what they did with Chaos Theory I think we should have some confidence in the devs. Hell with what their planning to do Sam Fisher may be much cooler than he's ever been in the splinter cell games. I say we give them a chance before we make assumptions. It isn't like Sam wont have some cool gadgets to play with.

are you forgetting this is a clancy game? since when do they have good or original settings? clancy is all about the political, american patriotic crap set in real world environments. there are STRICT limitations on what a clancy game can do. its not like it can suddenly develop a really deep and original immersive story, it will be the typical fake CNN borefest. but story has NEVER been a clancy game strong point, yes i LOVED SC 1 and chaos theory. but that was down to the gameplay. it is different from most other stealth games out there. if it goes the way of assassins creed (which im excited for BTW) then its gonna loose a heap of what actually makes it different. granted the devs probably dont want a stagnent series on their hands that barely changes from game to game *cough* halo *cough* but i think daylight and crowd mechanics are not the way to go. they may as well call it comething entirely different....oh wait, they did, assassins creed.

where assassins creed is an original IP which is original in concept, setting, character, animation and AI, this new SC is just a copycat with hardly any of what makes assassins creed sound so interesting. its not like sam fisher can be transported to the crusades and start assassinating people with a knife that springs from his wrist.

yes i may be prematurely condeming the game but after the failure that was double agent, and the fact that was heavy on the daylight missions, i simply cant be excited for this. even if im WOW'ed by the conviction trailer doesnt mean im gonna like the game, i was wowed by the double agent trailer and that was dire.

Again, Double Agent didn't embrace the daylight stuff on a gameplay level. It was the exact same splinter cell but with bright open areas - of course that's not gonna work properly!

This is entirely re-worked to function in the new settings, so what you have here is a game that can feel truly different while still being based on characters we love. Double Agent's shortcomings say NOTHING about this game.

I just saw the scans and i have to say that im realy impressed. The lighting is gorgeous and the level of detail is amazing.I just hope they improve their storytelling, because that has always been a weak spot in the series.

- No more sneaking around in the shadows. Apparently you're going to be more like James Bond and infiltrate buildings in plain daylight. You won't have to use force or sneak around as long as you don't act suspiciously.

- According to the article, every single object that is rendered on screen has physical properties and most of them can be used by Sam. For example, Sam can pick up furniture and use it as a weapon, or throw printers at enemies or papers in the face of enemies to gain the upperhand in fights.

- Melee fights are much more than "press this button to hit" this time around. There's different context sensitive attack buttons and as mentioned before lots of environmental interaction.

- Some pretty negative comments about the ps3 made by the devs. They state the fact that they are exclusive to the 360 allows them to do much more than if they were multiplatform (duh) but they also state they doubt they would be able to achieve what they're doing with the game on the 360 on the ps3 even if it was ps3 exclusive.

The lead programmer told the magazine he doubts they would have been able to pull of the lightning effects they have right now on the ps3. That's the only thing they say straight out, but they do state they believe they're much better off on the 360.
That explains it...no timed-exclusive, pure exclusive for 360 :D

Nice, let them take full advantage of the 360. I'm hoping this is the Splinter Cell that will raise the bar of "next-gen" as SCDA failed in that aspect.

Not saying SCDA was a bad game, it was actually a very good game. But it just lacked the impact a Splinter Cell game SHOULD have.

Here's for hoping, so far it's looking promising..! :)

SC:DA had some great levels (Kinshasa and Shanghai) but it felt very rushed. They've already been at ConViction for two years with 110 people so I think we're gonna get something very special.

I'm guessing disc space wont be as much of an issue for these guys as I thought.

Chaos Theory was like 5.9 gigs or something. Maybe I underestimated advanced texture compression techniques for directx and a ton of other things. Love these games pushing these impressive animations.

Even better is the fact that Fable 2 might play similarly in terms of combat and the use of the environment. The mystery is killing me in regards to this game just how cool will this game be? Will we get to see Sam dress up bond style or will he be just be bourne style throughout the game? What kinds of gadgets will he have? How cool will combat look in this damn game? Sandbox stealth type game? What will shootouts be like.

It seriously looks like with Ubisoft's new take on animations they can build a myriad of simulation games now. Assassin simulation game - check, Spy simulation game - check? Ninjas?? Would be sick if they were also intending to use such animations in the Naruto game, but maybe some of the animations would seem out of place in naruto unless of course they tweaked it :D

Seems strange why they blanked the PS3 and also gone onto say that this game would not be possible on PS3. :/

So whats that saying surely it could be made but just toned down anyone have any ideas. ?

The game could most likely be made on the ps3, but tuned down. They apparently think the lighting they achieved is a pretty big deal and what makes the game look as good as it does and that they don't think they'd achieve the same type of lighting on the PS3.

Who knows maybe they could mean that lighting in addition to other aspects of the game, but we don't know. Only thing we truly know is that they are more confident in the 360.

Double Agent 360 just proved that daylight doesn't work with the old Splinter Cells as base for its mechanics.

If you want old SC you've got four games on Xbox to play, I'm glad things move on - especially things as dynamic and open to re-interpretation as the Splinter Cell franchise and Sam Fisher.
Well, I believe daylight works ok, but they have to have a focus on night/shadows rather than daylight as it changes the game too much. But that wasn't the big problem with Double Agent though.

The problem with DA was the lack of a good story (for the 4th time in a row....well, Chaos was the best and passable). Technical problems from start to finish, I think it is ridiculous. When framerate affects playability, you have a huge problem. Extremely bugged multiplayer mode.........my worst experience on live ever.......and I've been with those 10 year olds yes, this was worst. Getting into a game was a really special moment, because it was a pain to get there. Very very short single player campaign. The good and bad and decisions making just didn't have an impact on the game, sorry Ubi. Re-used animations from Chaos Theory. Re-used levels. Same sound effects from the first game. Whoa, lots of problems.

In short, it felt like more of the same with some twists that made no sense.

EDIT: I saw those scans, looks unbelievable. Impressive lighting indeed. Splinter Cell had incredible lighting (the best) on its day, hopefully the same can be said about what looks be a reborn Splinter Cell.

While the consensus of what you said amounted to disappointment over Double Agent, I simply don't share your main concerns. Sure, it's a Chaos Theory with a big new coat of paint (models looks largely fantastic, so I really can't fault the graphics entirely) but since I don't really care about multiplayer and my only interest lies in the execution of missions I thought the game was pretty successful overall. I mean upon realising this was Shanghai/the Pandora Tomorrow to Chaos Theory, there wasn't much surprise in regards to it playing and animating like its predecessor.

From a gameplay standpoint the weakest bits of it were the JBA missions -- which wouldn't be such a chore if the map was half decent -- and the daylight missions where you were tasked to run around in the open. I have no problem with learning maps, but the rate at which guards spot you on those reduces the game to plain trial and error. Add to that the extremely sensitive sound level of running or moving fast and it adds up to the biggest problem the series has had yet.

Like I said in my two subsequent posts, I don't fault the daylight per se. On the contrary I think it's a welcome change after three entire games bathing in increasingly rediculously dark corners of corridores I wanna go with Sam on brand new adventures, but when applied to the old mechanics of Splinter Cell I simply don't think it's terribly enjoyable.

As for framerate issues, etc, it's odd how the Clancy games all have those in different capacities. It's like the teams don't even care. I'll go on record and say I don't think it actually affects SC gameplay in any significant way though.

I agree with everything you said except that I believe the framerate did affect gameplay. I don't know about you, but playing on the snow mission, on the tanker, was a huge pain in the ass. Framerate was simply BAD there. Past Splinter Cell have had some framerate problems, but never as bad and unjustifiable as it is in DA.
