Q. Not including Firefight maps, are there more or less multiplayer maps compared to pre-DLC Halo 3? (Forge World only counts as one map.)

A. There are eight multiplayer maps on the disc and five Forge World map variants: Asylum, Hemorrhage, Paradiso, Pinnacle, and The Cage. (The latter most certainly do count, our designers put a lot of time and effort into them and they play like a dream. One of those dreams where you stumble onto a pile of money, only in this dream you get to wake up and keep the cash.)

That doesn't bother me that much. I find I'm pretty slow to learn maps, so the less learnin' I have to do, the better.

Also, that 1 on 1 Elite video was awesome. I realize the guy playing wasn't all that good, but the Elite and its movement looked bad ass. So excited for this!

Eight is disappointing, but is it really fair to only count forge variants as one map anymore? Sure, they'll all share assets, but from a level design standpoint they'll be vastly different.

Then again, when you consider that two of those eight maps are invasion maps, that makes invasion seem extremely limited. It also means that we're only going to see two additional (normal) maps over the beta, and one of those is a remake. That's pretty ridiculous. No one can claim that this game won't have an extreme amount of content, but when you compare that to Halo 3 it's pretty disappointing. I'm still blown away by the possibilities that forge world offers, but you really can't deny that it's pretty skimpy when it comes to traditional match-making content. I guess we'll be buying DLC sooner than anyone would like.

13 Maps is good enough for me, more than what Halo 2/3 launched with and this number doesn't even include firefight!

13 maps is sorta an exaggeration of the facts though. There are 8 completely unique maps, two of which are invasion maps, and one of which is a remake. I agree that forge maps count for a lot more now, but it's still a little skimpy in terms of original (and unique) content for traditional game types. If you had told me in the beta that we were playing half of the standard multiplayer content I wouldn't have believed you. And why should we include firefight? Counting forge variants as a single level is borderline stupid though I guess, but I'm still a little bummed. This game will have plenty of content, but it's scattered content. No single mode will have an apt amount of it. Thankfully forge will attempt to make up for that, but it's still disappointing.

It's better than BC2 though.

Yup, looks like that's the case. And we know they'll ad more forge variants to match making in the future, but you can bet we'll get loads of premium DLC too. And I'm not strictly against that kind of content, but it's still a bit of a bummer that there's not more unique tile sets from day one. Forge is going to add an unbelievable amount of value to that base content, but mostly for custom games, at least at the start.

GR have the first 8mins of Nightfall and Tip of the Spear videos with the Blessing of Bungie, along with a write-up, i only watched the first min of Nightfall (which looks stunning btw), and it blew me away, hype meter now up to 10000!!!

It doesn't give much away and the person playing it is useless.
I was considering doing SP on Legendary straight off the bat to squeeze every last drop out of it but seeing shields disappear in the blink of an eye, I'm now not so sure.

The number of environments is disappointing and sadly in line with my fears a few pages back :( If you take away Forge World and the Invasion maps, 6 MP maps including one remake is disappointing.

Presumably then that makes for two that we haven't seen (Powerhouse, Swordbase, Reflection (Ivory Tower remake) and the Midship successor.

I'm not sure Invasion is going to be all that with just two maps either, I wasn't very taken with Boneyard and the game type as a whole didn't resonate with me. I'm not sure where there is going to be the big team battle type experiences of the previous games. (Think Waterworks, Sidewinder, Headlong etc.)

Hopefully some big maps with vehicle action can be conjured up in Forge World.

That Nightfall mission looked epic. I couldn't help but get a bit of a Modern Warfare feeling from it, which is a good thing in many ways.
