Amazing that you will be able to pit Robocop vs Terminator.

For something hillarious and very disturbing, someone on Eurogamer posted about "Robocop Remake - Scene 27". Google is your friend and..... EXTREMELY NSFW!!!!!

I'm sure they're working on it. It does look incredible indeed. But like any tech demo of game engines, it should be taken with an extreme amount of salt. No mind-blowing tech demo has ever translated into games looking like what they portrayed. This has been going on for decades now.

As a tech demo, they can raise everything to the maximum quality without worries of performance. But game developers add all sorts of physics simulations, player interactions, gameplay systems, NPCs, etc. All of that brings down the actual quality of a game considerably.

We might see this level of quality or something similar to it in the last generation of games for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. However, as a tech demo, it gives us an idea of how games will look someday. Which is nice.

you are not wrong but we have already had incredible UE4 games recently pushing the tech to its limits. so there is that too

Absolutely. When I mentioned the last generation of games, I was thinking of the games that came out last on:

PlayStation 2 (Final Fantasy 12, Persona 4);
PlayStation 3/Xbox 360 (Grand Theft Auto 5, The Last of Us);
PlayStation 4 (Ghost of Tsushima, The Last of Us 2).

Those are just a few examples, but they show that very late in a console's life, it approaches the level of tech demos shown 5-7 years prior. So we might see that Unreal Engine 5's tech demo quality on AAA games in 6-8 years.

Maybe even sooner, since Epic will keep working and optimizing Unreal Engine 5 to be better and more efficient with time, so maybe we will see it in 4-5 years. Though the most exciting thing for me was a tweet by Nibel (link below), where he says that Unreal Engine 5 will have no "no LODs or pop-ins".

https://twitter.com/Nibellion/status/1260586174021...

If true, that along the blazing fast loading times will make for real next-gen improvements. Something that you will feel while playing that is significantly different than previous console generations. Just like the jump from SD to HD.

At the end of the day, I'm very excited for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, I have been saving money and am planning on buying a PlayStation 5 at launch, if the prices aren't out of this world. I'm more interested in the Sony's exclusives and much faster loading/streaming times of the PS5 than in the 10% more graphics power of the XBSX.

I already have a PC and Xbox Game Pass is an insanely great deal, specially with every Xbox exclusive available at launch on both Xbox and PC. So if I'm going to buy a console, it's clearly Sony's PlayStation 5.

If the PS5 prices are too high, I will wait a year and/or invest in a much more powerful PC. By middle-late 2021 there should be some insanely fast graphics cards from both Nvidia and AMD - even RTX 2080 Ti isn't great at many modern games for 4K.

My current setup is still great as it is and I don't need to upgrade now, so I can happily wait 1 year and a half if need be. Since I will keep saving money, by then I might buy one of those SSDs at 7 GB/s speed as well.

something else that was interesting about this demo was that unlike the previous ones it was run real-time on a next-gen console and not some high-end pc so it gives me hope that we would see this tech realized and surpassed a lot sooner. that is, if developers choose to adopt this engine (see the latest Digital Foundry video)

Absolutely. But the hard part is when you start adding gameplay systems, physics, interactive objects, NPCs, etc. However, since Epic will also optimize it further, this might indeed happen sooner.

Although, another obstacle I just thought of is that a lot - if not most - of games will be cross generation, that will undoubtedly hamper the development of these technologies. The longer it takes for most developers to be next gen only, the longer it will take for these features to be solely focused and iterated on, as they won't spend more resources than they need to.

Either way, it will be a great console generation. I'm even considering pre-ordering Assassin's Creed: Valhalla, which is something I never do anymore. We will see how things go, but outside of the current world situation, Gaming's future looks very promising.

We couldn't get the videos. An Epic Games representative told me "we are only sharing the videos on Unreal Engine YouTube and Vimeo [channels]."
Sorry guys.

No need to apologize, Game2k. It's not your fault, that's Epic's decision, so there's nothing we can do. Thanks for trying. You guys make Gamersyde what it is and you all rock! Thank you very much.

And while very unfortunate, as Gamersyde's version's quality would have blow everyone's mind, there's still a 4K option on both Vimeo and on YouTube. So no worries.
