I think the fact they were people and not animals or anthropomorphic cars went a long way to getting me into it more than something like Finding Nemo. As a result, I found it funnier and more exciting than other cg flicks.

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like the same will be true of Megamind. The previews for that are not doing it for me at all.

Man, I love the Incredibles. The things they do animation-wise are fantastic in that movie. I actually didn't like Wall-E or Up nearly as much. Cars was Ok, but I thought Finding Nemo was great...

Pixar movies are awesome but not as awesome as HTTYD for me, for instance if I had to rank them it will be like this:

How To Train Your Dragon
Finding Nemo
Wall-E
Ratatouille

Didn't like UP that much, opening was awesome but that was it for me.
I fully enjoyed how to train your dragon but to rate above Wall-E Rat and Up is madness MADNESS!

True it goes down (awf awf) hill after the first ten minutes but its still amazing, first ten minutes are up there with the first 10-15 minutes of Wall-e (the whole silent movie thing was just glorious, shame the humans come into it that stained the movie.

I was cracking at the humans

But in a more serious note I think they are tied for me, I can't pick one for favorite, I love them all.

saw akira... what a masterpiece

i've noticed japanese animation is different from american animation. japanese animation tends to have mature themes, and the movies are seen as artistic archieving where the makers is trying to send a message compared to hollywood which is trying to entertain, generally speaking

How is Akira a masterpiece? The animation is stunning but the story is complete garbage.

Also....you fist now realised that there is anime that is not aimed towards kids? Really? Anime comes in all flavors, stretching from kid-friendly ghibli stuff to straight out porn and everything in between :P

Look, if you claim that something is a masterpiece you'd better have something to support it other than popular opinion. Is that too much to ask? Akira is much like your standard damn square RPG, they weave a lot of bullshit in to the story to make it seem complex and deep for the teen demographic that it's supposed to hit when it's just a bunch of pseudo-philosophical bullshit. It's ver VERY common in anime and it does not make Akira a masterpiece in itself. As i said the animation in akira is AMAZING, but as a movie? Honestly, i don't think it's especially entertaining, nor is it artsy in any way. Everybody that has even a slight interest in animation should watch it, but if you just want a good anime, go for something else imo.

What's the difference between that and you saying why it isn't a masterpiece, when all you did was simply state your opinion?

That's how things work, if you claim something you sort of have to motivate it...what's the point otherwise? What's the point of a forum if nobody gives a crap about the other posts, only posting your own opinion and never questioning anything? I'd also like to add taht i do offer a motivation for my opinion; the story is nonsensical and pointless while the animation is fantastic. It's not a masterpiece imo, and there is plenty of better anime out there.

For me, this seems an awful lot like the cannibal holocaust thing again. Jump on the bandwagon.

You still haven't said why though, you just say "nonsensical and pointless" or something similar but you give no explanation whatsoever or other examples in which we can conclude you have a point to suport your argument.

The story really goes nowhere, explains nothing and in the end it feels like a fairly typical angsty teen drama with some super powers involved. I mean, sure i get why it got so big in teh west as i think it was probably the first adult themed anime many westerners saw, but to be fair i don't think it holds up that well with hindsight. It's visally pleasing but the characters are just run of the mill, and like said, teh story really goes nowhere it seems. It just feels like it builds up and there's never any payoff. I think it's also fairly obvious that the movie is only based on something like the first or two first volumes of the manga.

I'm not saying i hate it, but i think it's severely over hyped and calling it a masterpiece is surely a bit of a stretch. Then again, it's the same guy that called Cannibal Holocaust a masterpiece, so by that frame of reference Akira sure is a work of epic proportions.

we can agree to disagree, thats all im gona say

and when i said masterpiece i was referring within its genre and its influence after,(and the artistic skills that went into considering it was hand drawn). are there others animes better than it, yes they might be or not. like how dragon ballz was influential but there have come other better mangas after because of the impact it has had.... i guess when it comes to movies and anything else its a matter of perception

So i guess this is why we disagree, you call it a masterpiece because you idea of anime is Dragonball Z. Again, by comparison to taht drivle, i'd agree that Akira is a masterpiece, but that is only compared to the utter turd that is Dragonball but that doesn't mean that shonen is the only type of manga/anime taht exists. There is plenty of more adult themed magna and anime both before and after Akira.

Honestly if you think that stuff like Dragonball z and one piece is what anime is all about you are utterly unqualified to talk about what is a masterpiece and not in terms of anime as your experience is so extremely limited. If you want the good stuff you'll have to go out and look cause a lot of it is only available as fan subs, but still. I mean...have you even seen the readily available "classics"? Go out there and watch some of the actually fun, entertaining and good anime instead.

Watch stuff like Neon Genesis Evangelion (id on't like it but it's a classic), Full Metal Panic, Haibane Renmei, FLCL or even Patlabor (if you want something a bit out of the ordinary).

Kind of a harsh conclusion to jump to based on what he said. Throwing out DBZ as a quick example doesn't necessarily mean that's all he's seen anime-wise.

Maybe so. He is more than welcome to prove me wrong if that is the case :)

But just mentioning DBZ alone is hardly grounds for me thinking so either, previous posts make me think that his experience with anime is limited.
