That's the one.

I liked the movie. It did a great job with the human side of things and the mood of the film kept progressing unexpectedly, all the way to the touching end.

I'm interested in seeing the director's past stuff now, which I'll probably watch later tonight.

I didn't dislike The Host, but i think it was maybe a bit long-winded. Though i watched the insanely shitty dubbed version for some reason, so that most likely killed off a lot of the atmosphere as well :P

For a monster-movie it was pretty good though, i have to admit.

Maybe so. He is more than welcome to prove me wrong if that is the case :)

But just mentioning DBZ alone is hardly grounds for me thinking so either, previous posts make me think that his experience with anime is limited.
Yeah so what you said is pretty insulting. I'll ignore that though as best as I can. Ron is correct
DBZ is an icon in the American manga/anime market, and has been a huge presence here. It's the only reason why I brought it up.

Miyazaki or better yet STUDIO GHIBLI, as well as DBZ, FLCL, Akira, and Neon Genesis. Are anime I'd consider to be gateway anime. The shit that gets you started because it is the most accessible.

I'd list shit I've read and or watched again in here, which I'm pretty sure I have already done, but I have tried posting this once already and am lazy.

What i said wasn't directed at you though? Not that it really matters. I still think that you'd have to be pretty new to anime to think that Akira is a masterpiece. It holds a certain place in history, if you will, since it was one of the first anime movies to gain any substantial fame outide of japan but other than that? Can any one of you guys really classify it as a masterpiece? As one of the best examples of anime that just stands above the rest? I know I can't, nor do i imagine that anyone who watched some anime outside of what 4kids dub and distribute in america will.

Also i'd certainly not agree that FLCL is a "gateway anime", most people just think it's weird and stupid ;)

I remember liking Akira when I was younger, but having watched it recently, I have to side with Megido on this one. I find Akira to be mostly incoherent and poorly paced. I really can't stand all the pseudo-phylosophy. I do think the animation itself is top notch, but it's not a movie I'd watch more than once a decade...

I was new to it when I watched it back in the early 90's. I do think it's a masterpiece for its time, and the fact it holds a place in history is some proof of that. I realize my belief that it's a masterpiece is partially nostalgia, much like thinking Goldeneye is a masterpiece.
Akira still holds true as a huge part of manga's history, as well as anime films. The animation is still gorgeous, the music still fantastic, original USA voices still excellent, etc. I could still enjoy it now and it's held up really well even though it is quite old.

So i guess this is why we disagree, you call it a masterpiece because you idea of anime is Dragonball Z. Again, by comparison to taht drivle, i'd agree that Akira is a masterpiece, but that is only compared to the utter turd that is Dragonball but that doesn't mean that shonen is the only type of manga/anime taht exists. There is plenty of more adult themed magna and anime both before and after Akira.

Honestly if you think that stuff like Dragonball z and one piece is what anime is all about you are utterly unqualified to talk about what is a masterpiece and not in terms of anime as your experience is so extremely limited. If you want the good stuff you'll have to go out and look cause a lot of it is only available as fan subs, but still. I mean...have you even seen the readily available "classics"? Go out there and watch some of the actually fun, entertaining and good anime instead.

Watch stuff like Neon Genesis Evangelion (id on't like it but it's a classic), Full Metal Panic, Haibane Renmei, FLCL or even Patlabor (if you want something a bit out of the ordinary).
did i say DBZ is the greatest thing since slice bread was invented NO, i simply said it had an influence and other works have surpassed it. call it a prototype if u say. others were influenced by them, and improved upon it. akira and DBZ were great for their respective time. akira introduced anime to the west and influenced many mangas in the 90's

perhaps masterpiece was strong word, but its influence and place in history cannot be denied, for its time was great and maybe one of the best

u need to stop jumping to conclusions without understanding what context i'm talking about

This. The movie may have made a splash when it hit back in 88 but it hasn't aged wella nd as such it's not hard to argue that it was never that good. A movie that is actually good is good no matter when you watch it. In my mind a movie that doesn't age well can't possibly be a masterpiece. No matter what perspective. Is it a significant movie in terms of how anime penetrated the west? Yes it is, and yes so is DBZ and a lot of other really shitty anime. None of them are what i'd refer to as masterpieces. Especially the mind numbingly bad Dragon Ball (the first few volumes of the DB manga, when it actually has some humour and adventure going for it, are nice but then it's all shitty fighting and bullshit space powers...It's over 9000!!!).

Also, what do you mean for it's time? I can still watch anime that is older than Akira and enjoy it plenty. I still like Fist of the North Star and Space Adventure Cobra, they've aged well. They are just as fun and entertaining as they were back in the 80's. If a movie get's shittier with time (ie you grow older and start realizing that even though the blood and gore was cool the movie lacks substance), is that not the ultimate proof that it is in fact not especially good?

Yes well i might have used some strong words back there but i get very wound up about these things. Also, calling something a masterpiece is quite a strong word as well, and it just get's me going.

You shouldn't take someone's use of the word so personally or as an attack on what you believe. Both Gmulis and I are talking about this stuff in historical terms or based on a timeline, etc.

If I watched Fist of North Star and Space Adventure Cobra, there's a good chance I'd find them to be absolute shit now, but that is just me. I would also wager they were both less influential than both DBZ and Akira. Those are clearly where your involvement in the genre begin though so it holds a different standing. I agree with Gmulis on the matter however. I don't think you can even talk about Akira or DBZ in terms of just the West though, they were both massive in the East too. The artist behind Akira's manga is a major influence in the East in just about everything he did.

Also my initial statement was toward ManThatYouFear fyi, not you Gmulis.
I also see now you were talking to Gmulis Megido, however I made the same statement he did ages ago in this very thread.
DBZ may be absolute shit, but you can't deny it has been one of the most influential anime in perhaps all of anime. I can only speak about the West on that matter though.

Dude, Fist of the North Star is one of the biggest names in manga and anime ever, it's HUGE in japan and pretty popular over here as well. Say what you will about Fist of the North Star but that shit had a pretty big impact back in the day. I think it's like the 25th best selling manga ever to run in Shonen Jump or something like that.

That's beside the point though, waht i'm saying is that no matter how much influence a particular movie or manga had, that in itself doesn't make it good. World War 2 had a pretty big influence on history, it's still a rather shitty thing. Influential and good is not the same thing.

Also you are wrong, i watched Hokuto no Ken for the first time last year, both seasons, and i enjoyed them. Had only ever seen the movie which i remembered as ratehr crappy. As for Space Adventure Cobra, yes there's a lot of nostalgia but i still think the content works well for the intended younger audience. I mean, if you show that to a 10-year old they'd probably think it was fucking sweet. What's not to love? Space pirates, sexy ladies, treasure, conspiracies and a guy with a gun instead of a left arm smoking a cigar. It's instant win :)

I don't take the use of particular words as a insult or a personal attack or anything, i just get upset when people throw words like that around without thinking about what they are saying. Especially so when it comes to big titles like this. So many asshats go around proclaiming that NGE is a masterpiece and Akira is a masterpiece and this and that is a masterpiece, and when you ask why it more often than not turns out that they say so becasue someone else told them that it was, no though at all about what they actually watched. That kind of behaviour offends me a lot. Not saying that that by necessity is the case here, but in general. It tends to draw a knee-jerk reaction from me.

The House of the Devil

Wow, I wasn't expecting much, but this movie nailed that late 70's/early 80's look, film style, and similarly creepy feel (it was released in 2009).
Hardly anything is happening during the whole movie but you just can't help being entertained - the building suspense is definitely unnerving, and it does get crazy at the end.

A good SP Halloween flick, even if a day late ;)

Awesome

Yeah, I've been watching these idiots since the CKY tapes. I think Jackass 2 was a little better, but honestly, I don't know how true that is. It's not the sort of thing where the little touches really stick with you. It just seems like maybe some bits could have been explored a bit more. It made me wonder if the cost of the 3D tech wasn't a factor in figuring out what they could do. But that could have just been a bias I had entering the experience. I thought it was fun though, though there's one scene in particularly that's a little too obscene for my taste.. well.. sorta.

Considering how old Knoxville is getting, he really doesn't hold anything back.
