MS E3 2008 Press Conference (Links Inside)

E308: Final Fantasy XIII release details trickle out

After announcing Final Fantasy XIII for the Xbox 360 (see above) a few questions were left unanswered. The most pressing question regarded the release date and development of the title. Square Enix has just revealed some of those details in their own conference.

According to Siliconera, Final Fantasy XIII's 360 port has not been announced for release in Asia. The team is currently focusing development on the PS3 version of the title. Once the game releases in Japan, the team can then work on localization and porting it to the Xbox 360. It is unclear if the game will release simoltaneously for the Xbox 360 and PS3 in North America. We may be in for a long wait until Final Fantasy XIII lands on the Xbox 360 but who cares? It looks awesome!

Square Enix's plan to release the Xbox 360 version of the game is to focus on building the franchise utilizing the the Xbox 360's significant userbase. However, although Final Fantasy XIII has been announced for Microsoft's console, Versus XIII is still in development as a PS3 exclusive. Or is it?

Update: To clarify -- according to G4TV, Microsoft requested the footage of the Final Fantasy XIII trailer be shown from this angle.

Well I watched the live stream, and it was pretty good. Nothing new really, but Left 4 Dead looked really good and there was an extended trailer of Dragon Age with some really epic music.

Talk about being late to the party.. thanks for all the updates guys. Is there some where I can download the entire MS press conference? I'm several hours behind the curve here.

Oh btw, in the EA press conference one of the Bioware devs pretty much confirmed that Dragon Age will be making its way to consoles.

I like how it wasn't even a 'official' announcement - he just casually slipped it in during his speech.

I would take the superior version if my computer would play it. Unfortunately i'll have to settle for the console version, but i'm sure it'll be no slouch.

The graphics may be no slouch, but the UI is going to have to be completely redesigned, and I'd rather play it on the platform that it was designed for. And, even if you don't consider the controls, we already know that they have big things planned for modders and world builders.. so it seems silly to me to opt for a console version. It would be like waiting for a console release of Diablo 3.

What did he say exactly, anyway? I doubt we're talking a simultaneous release here.. did he say that they're porting it, or that it's simply a likely or possible scenario?

We're definitely not talking about a simultaneous release here. He said something like, "PC owners, and eventually console owners, will be able to experience this RPG that goes back to Bioware's roots". Sounds like it's simply going to be a port over from the PC versions, which i'll be satisfied with I guess.

So how did people come to the conclusion that the Netflix deal was like, free? It's the same thing as their instant view catalog on the PC, or their own set top box.. which from what I hear, includes a pretty shitty selection of content. It's cool, it removes the need to purchase their $99 set top box for Xbox 360 owners, in order to watch that content on their televisions.. but it's not quite as huge as I had hoped.
