I had a launch 360 that broke down last month.. I opened her up. Cleaned out all of the shit inside (there wasn't any cooling paste on the chip).
Bought some new cooling paste. Applied some of it on the chip and now my 360 runs fine again....

lol, for how long did you wrap it in a towel? I wonder how long that fix lasts, let us know.

About an hour. I used a leather jacket and not a towel too. I'll let you know how long it lasts, but I suspect it to RROD again next time I turn it on. I'll wrap it again.

Who came up with the towel idea in the first place ? it sounds as mad as putting it in a microwave..

It's not that crazy. The idea is to fix broken solder joints with heat. People put their videocards in the oven, too.

I wouldn't try the microwave though, unless you want a light show.

My 360 is out of guarantee now and i'm scared to switch the thing (3rd one) back on.

All I want it to do is hang so I can finish the second half of Fallout 3, then it's shrink warp time and retirement to the console graveyard that be my loft.

Mine was a Launch 360, If you could've just seen the state it was in... I am in no doubt, MS rushed the 360 to launch before the PS3 and left a couple of "minor" faults... It's sad to see how they could have put such a product on the market. But I bet they think it was worth it....

Yeah I didn't get error messages either (are you supposed to?), I just got three red lights in my previous boxes.

For what is worth, my third one is giving me issues with the DVD drive, so I just bought one off of ebay, hopefully that solves my issues.

A mate of mine had dvd problems as well and got another DVD drive like you. Problem is, your DVD drive is linked to your 360 via some unique identifier. Meaning, it won't work unless it has that same code.

The only way around this is via hacking the firmware and such. He couldn't be arsed to go through all that crap so in the end he just got another 360 alltogether. Just a heads up...

My mate owns a computer shop in portsmouth, 4 months prior to the launch he was telling me how the launch was going to be delayed because in his words "they dont work" i at the time laughed him off calling him full of shit

...

Yeah so in short MS knew in advance and chose NOT to bother.

Yeah I know, I will flash it with the firmware from my other drive.

At this point, if my box broke and was out of warranty, I would get an arcade for double the repair price, but not just for a faulty drive.

I got it, instead of fiddling around with firmware, I found out you can just swap the "motherboard"/drive controller from the old to the new one. Working awesome now :D

Yeah it works, and yeah, it probably has to be the same brand drive. You can check which type of drive you have very easily, just use google pictures. As for the warranty, at least here in the US, you get 3 years from the point of purchase for RROD, and 1 year for any other failure.

Long story short... I'm getting an Elite... somehow I must be in my wife's good graces, and she has OK'd it... and I'm also getting my old 360 repaired free of charge, so I'll have a spare. I'll be needing a transfer cable from another OSer if possible, in the next couple of weeks.

I bought my first Xbox on launch day, and the one that just RROD, was the "new" one they sent. before they had sent me that one, I had signed up for an official Microsoft Service Contract... which is $60, and lasts 2 years, essentially, an extended 2 year warranty, that should have covered me for a total of 5 years as I'd logically expect it... 3 years for the RROD E74 error, and 2 more for my purchased 2 years extended, directly from MS...

It took the 3rd phone rep... the first American, non-Indian to understand my reasoning, and push it through... long story short, I'm getting an Elite (Jasper chipset) hopefully no Red Rings anymore, and only have to worry about other things. I'm also getting my 2 year warranty recognized by MS (so its Free!), even though I'm past 3 years from launch... Nov 2005.

Here is something I read in my research... If yours is out of warranty and MS wants you to pick up the bill or would if yours is over 3 years old... $99.99 to fix... this will save you a few bucks and get you a 2 year extended...

This is the same deal I purchased, early on.

Note: The majority of problems that people have experienced are with a faulty/damaged dvd assembly. If this is the case, you PROBABLY will NOT lose your game saves/soundtracks. If you have any other problems with your Xbox console or, if your Xbox console has been in for repair two or more times previously, you most likely WILL lose the contents of your harddrive, as Microsoft will replace at least the harddrive & lens assembly, if not the whole xbox.

I had the above official MS service contract (2 year extended) and it saved me, since my original Xbox 360 was purchased in November 2005.
Okay... maybe not so short.

Well, I had bought my 2 year extended warranty a year into owning my first 360, before, MS offered up the RROD 3 year, because I had heard such horror stories, on failure rates.

But Shady... for what I posted this one guy suggest... perhaps... but MS not fessing up right away and having such a high failure rate is a bit shady too. I think 3 years for RROD was a step in the right direction, but they should have made it lifetime against it, since it is so prevalent, and rampant.

The exact reason why i laugh at anyone that says Microsoft has great Customer Service, if they had great customer service, these replacement consoles wouldn't break after a couple of weeks.

They are taking you guys for complete idiots, and i for one wouldn't take it, if that happened to me i'd have demanded my money back a very long time ago.

Kenshin, if you want to make it RROD, just force it to have one. I don't know how to make it have RROD on purpose, but try, thens end it so you can have a new one, or they fix it along with the dvd drive.

Ah well, I say bring on the DS and DMC4 demos on PS3 soon and I will be fine.

Maybe sounds a bit strange but somehow I wish my Xbox 360 would RROD on me (so it forces me to buy a new one with HDMI output).. But the old thing (MFU 10-2005) is still going strong, so I guess I'll have to keep playing in HD via component or VGA..
