I never buy these games full price, and they're rarely full price even at release. With DW I always wait for the Empires edition because I like the strategy layer to those, so maybe that's why they're usually a bit cheaper, but I somehow expect this to be sensibly priced aswell.

Love me some co-op slashing, and this seems to have a lot of self awareness and fun charm to it.

Yeah definitely, like I said long time ago.
Basara games have the best combat polishness in this type of genre IMO, and there is a certain "comedy" thrown in.

For example the part were Yukimura and his master keeps punching eachother and calling eachothers names is one of those pieces :P

I personally prefer DW to any other game in the genre. It's less to do with elaborate combat - though that has a hypnotic, addictive quality aswell - and more to do with focusing your efforts in certain areas of a battlefield. The sweeping strategy of your approach in DW puts them high above similar games for me, and Empires in particular have a great sense of persistent campaign management and light tactical elements aswell.

N3 I straight up think is too involved for its own good, I didn't like that game at all.

But whats the point of playing if the core gameplay is not satistfying...combat.
DW series has bad and unsatistfying combat IMO, you dont get a sense of polishness, just sloppy, but thats just me.

I find it satisfying, but not in an involved combaty way. It feels more like Geometry Wars to me, you sorta "herd" groups of enemies together and then wash over them with your musou attack. I find DW games immensly addictive, but when you say "combat" I kinda picture elaborate combos and stuff like that, and that's not really what DW does.

And that's not really what I wanna do in a game like this, as little as I want elaborate flight combat tactics to be part of Geometry Wars.

But the thing is that, from what I understand, that is what you do in Basara as well.

However you can do "super attacks" in Basara as well and just go crazy, just look at the videos and you will see them.

When I say combat I am not talking about NG, DMC...etc.

I am talking about how polished it is.
Weight of the weapons, characters, hit detection, animations between the attacks and movement or attacks hitting your enemies....etc. the combat is much more satistfying.

I have played 2 DW games, DW5 and DW Strikeforce, and I didnt find it fun to play because all you do is attack, and it just wasent fun compared to the little I played with Basara 2.
And you know how much I like this hack and slash genre so I know a good combat when I see/experience one, DW isnt cutting it.

Again, thats just me.

More elaborate animation, more focus on each individual attack would just ruin it. It's meant to be this pulsating, rythmical, hypnotic thing. Really, it is GeoWars or Smash TV more than anything. In those games you push a stick to keep attacking, in DW you dish out virtually the same button presses over and over.

Winning in DW isn't about whether you defeat each individual enemy, it's about whether you can handle each enemy type and survive each boss wave. It's about concentrating your efforts in the right places in order to turn the tide of the battle. You collect powerups and health items, twin stick shooter style, and instead of a screen clearing "bomb" you have your musou attack.

DW has nothing to do with what you call "good combat", as little as GeoWars or Smash TV are about anything resembling a typical shooter's feedback. It's not an emulation of a physical thing, it's all gameplay layer. Japanese game design is often abstract to the point of having little in common with the visual representations on screen.

If this game is bogged down by strict dial-a-combo systems and fussy, sticky animation I'll prolly find it as frustrating as N3. Jim Sterling - self professed DW lover extraordinaire of Destructoid - played this at E3 and is stoked about it though, so I trust that it's a good time.

Also; mental character designs!

Again its like you are describing Basara series LOL
Its the same thing, you fight groups of enemies, different types, to sub bosses to main bosses...wave after wave. My friend who has played Basara 2 ALOT told me that Basara series is like DW series but with much better combat system that actually feels more satistfying when you do the attacks, and it is much more cooler and exagerated which is good IMO.

In these type of games, combat is very important even if you press the same button alot of times.

I dont know if I understand what you mean by "sticky animation", but its not like DMC or NG for example were your attacks are focused on one enemy character.
If you saw the videos you know that most of the attacks hit almost most of the enemies infront of the character and not one or two.

Well, N3 and DW are very clearly divided in stickyness I reckon. Sticky is when I feel like you're kinda sticking to an action through animation. N3 had a lot of that, specific combos that did specific things, and it just felt like they complicated what should've been a straight forward task within the overall game.

In fact, any kind of dynamism in a game like this where the addictive nature of a repeated action is key, is a bad idea in my opinion. The same way having elaborate combos in Diablo or headshots in Command and Conquer would be terrible.

DW is very floaty, you kinda just sweep through enemies and there's never the feeling of an interrupted flow to it. Sorta the way GeoWars has you "painting" over enemies and they die without interrupting your shots or doing anything too fuzzy in the way of animation. It's all very pattern like, and built on a degree of predictability.

I could be attaching the wrong meaning to your description of "good combat" here, but with your complete disinterest in DW I can't but imagine the difference is significant.

But as a summary; in a game like this I need each encounter to be elaborate in proportion to its importance and frequency. I don't want a more complex combo system, I don't want fussier hit detection that somehow makes each slash of a sword or impact from a club feel more uniquely significant because that just works towards a shattered sensation on the whole for me. It would be as if Tetris had you physically lifting the blocks out of a bucket, lowering them down with a crane, and making sure they fit into each respective slot by nudging them ever so slightly left and right.

Sure, that'd feel more like building a tower, but that's not *really* why I play Tetris.

Well Simon all I can say is you need to play Basara 3 if you are into these type of games, if you got the chance of trying Basara 2 on PS2, go for it! (though I think that is only available in Japan, not sure).

I hope EU gets it in October as well, really want it.
I decided to buy it because I know I will regret it later if I dont. And these type of games coming from Japan are the types that if you dont get them at launch in a few months you might not be able to get your hands on them (unless you import which I dont, unless its from US).

Interview from Comic Con
http://comic-con.gamespot.com/video/6270703/?hd=1

Producer of DMC and RE...you can't go wrong to know this games combat has polished combat compared to DW :)

Heroe time awesome, I loved how the coins went into slow motion as well hehe.

I can't wait to buy this game, a pre-release demo of the Japanese demo would be appreciated ALOT Capcom!
Or else I have to emulate the Wii version (if possible) on Dolphin with the Japanese version until October I can get it on PS3. You make me grow evil Capcom, very evil :P

Also in a interview with Kobayashi said there wont be any DLC for this game...atleast he is being honest about it. I rather have that than some people say "DLC support in the future" but we wont get a damn (Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2, outfits sucks).

The previous Basara game had nearly 30 playable characters while in this one its only 16, and with no DLC plans thats pretty much it.
His reason?
Next question was about why only 16 characters? Was the game rushed to meet a deadline?
Originally they were going to make 30+ characters but realized they didn't have enough time so they focused on the ones that we got.
The game has been in making for like 4 year or so and they couldnt make the famous characters back in when they already had the movesets and all? Such a damn shame, I wanted Kojuro, badly :(

Last thing...
When asked on the differences between the Japanese and English version he said the only differences are the language/dub obvious and that the JPN version defaults difficulty to easy while the ENG version defaults to normal. He also said on higher difficulties the enemies carry stronger weapons.
