Gothic 3 works though. Quite good as well.
Artificial intelligence is no match for natural stupidity.
Batman AA (BATMAN): it's also on consoles but the PC version looks impressive.
Orange Box & L4D (FPS)
Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines (RPG): This might be a bit older than 5 years. Also I would recommend to install fan patch for it.
Civilization 4 + expansions (TBS) or maybe wait and see how good the 5th game is, which is coming this fall.
There has been so many great games in the past 5 years so it's hard to pick top5 steam games. It would also help if you could tell what kind of games you like.
Edit: yes, Company of Heroes rules too.

If you like city build games:
Anno 1404 + expansion, and Tropico 3 are both great choices.
This just of the top of my head. There's so many good games to be played!
And oh keep an eye on the daily deals at steam! Buy games for a cool price, and when you get new PC set, just install them.

@Wheat_Thins: People have already covered a lot of the good recent stuff. It's sorta depressing how much of that is multiplatform, but many of those games shine on the PC and five years is actually a pretty tremendous window. My first recommendation would be to check out Steam's current sale and the best deals you'll find on there for any brand new (relatively speaking) PC gamer are:
Valve Complete Pack (currently on sale for $66.99) http://store.steampowered.com/sub/2546/
THQ Complete Pack (currently on sale for $49.99) http://store.steampowered.com/sub/4587/
There's no quicker way to build a library of amazing PC games than those two packs!

I think there's a high chance Witcher will be a daily deal until sunday. If not it's still worth the current price, for a 50+ hours long RPG :)

Got Shatter (Double dipped since I have it on the ps3 ), Flatout and Red Faction.

Such great deals today for who doesn't own those games. Shatter - Torchlight are very good :)
