Alien Swarm Game & Source SDK Release Coming Monday

On Monday, July 19th Alien Swarm is going to be released for free via Steam.

In addition to the game, Valve will also release the complete code base for Alien Swarm. This includes updates to the Source engine SDK and full Steamworks integration. If you’ve ever thought about developing a mod on the Source engine with Steamworks, this release provides more insight and examples for using Steamworks in game production.

Just played some Alien swarm and it's pretty fun. I'm really enjoying it, from the little i played. If wasn't free i would surely buy it.

Medic seems fun, and co-op is very important. Very nice classes, and lots weapons to unlock.

One achievement unlocks a hat for Team fortress 2 lol, alien on the head, looks funny on the bald engineer head :p

Can also use custom soundtracks. Go to options, audio, at the bottom: Customize battle music, then just the music you want.

Can't wait to play some more, and to mods start coming! I await l4d top down mod. I also hope someone makes a Space Hulk mod, would be amazing.

It has an IN-GAME level editor which can also randomly generate missions.

In Steam Tools, install the Alien Swarm SDK.
Run the game as normal.
Activate the console.
Open it.
Type 'SV_Cheats 1'
Type 'ASW_tilegen'

There you go. One level editor. I just tested it. Without hyperbole, it took me three minutes to generate and compile a whole new level from scratch. And then I was playing it. And died really quickly because there were no bots to help me, but whatever, it WORKS.

I repeat: THIS GAME HAS A RANDOM MISSION GENERATOR AND IN-GAME EDITOR. The number of missions is officially infinite.

Just played the first few missions. It's quite good. I'm a little bummed that there aren't more pre-loaded missions, but random maps and a level editor FTW?

Yea cool game BUT Uruk crashed the game on the last level! Next time I'll make the game.

It depends what kind of maps the random generator makes.

It froze my PC! And it happened again yestarday, weird...Wonder what's happening.
But yeah you better host next time so if i go kaboom game won't shut down :P

It's fun game, but really play with randoms suck. They rush alone and go melee frenzy, and with me as a medic they make me deplete all my healing, then when we really need it, i don't have any. Then they scream for medic while being infested and explode into little aliens lol.

Now that every Team Fortress 2 class has received his (or her) class-specific update, where does developer Valve go from here? Onward and upward, with at least one new substantial update, due soon(ish).

PC Gamer writes that Valve is planning an update to the venerable class-based shooter within the next month—*Valve Time notwithstanding. That new version will reportedly add "item trading, a brand new game mode, and around twenty new weapons and hats."

I wonder if these "new weapons" will just be the much talked about weapon skins. That would be fine with me. I think we're getting a little close to critical mass anyway.
