Well, consumers will make the decision that they feel is right for them, which is the way it should be.
Saturday some dude that came here to set up a printer asked me " So whats up man have you seen that new xbox? looks neat right"

I felt the fucking obligation to tell him that Microsoft will fuck him over if he buys it.

And then I continued to explain him everything, when all was clear to him he no longer wanted one.

Consumers don't always know what's rigth to them, shit will hit the fan after release with people returning that crap when they realize whats going on.

Most of them already have made that decision and MS is helping them to make it easier, check the various forums and how people are converting from MS fans of years owning Xbox and 360, now to Sony and Ps4.

Okay, you keep believing that this is in anyway representative of the 100+ million gamers out there that bought consoles this generation. If you go by most hardcore gamers and forums, Kinect was suppose to be a sales flop and have no positive impact on Xbox 360 sales whatsoever. It actually ended up being fairly successful and gave 360 sales a huge boost. Vita was suppose to be this huge hit, although some people are embarrassed to say that now. What people are saying on forums regularly doesn't amount to a hill of beans, because so few could never hope to speak for so many.

This is so true.

It's scary how similar next gen's MS is to early days current gen sony. They're both relying/relied heavily on the ignorant. sony was hoping they'd sell on name brand alone, and the belief that you could only play FF and GTA on a sony platform, because, you know, that was pretty much the case the generation before...so why not now...

MS are doing the same thing but with functionality. They're approaching all this with the hopes people will buy the Xbone expecting to keep using their gamefly or lovefilm subscription. Or expecting to sell and buy games on ebay etc, just like they do now...i mean, why would such things be removed, right? and then they'll realise non of it is possible. So the consoles they do sell at launch is going to create an aftershock. I honestly wouldn't be surprised to read headlines akin to "Xbone one of the most returned consoles"

Imo, the question is: Does the mainstream even give a fuck about the restrictions the Xbox One will have?

I mean, many people buy CoD and FIFA annually and every now and then some GTA-like block-buster-game.
They can not buy it as a used game? They dont care, because they buy it day one, and play it for one year. After this year the game isn't even worth selling anymore, so they also dont give a fuck about that.

Plus, Family-Sharing sounds great for them.

I think MS main 'problem' is their pricing which Don Matrick perfectly justified, LOL.

Except COD doesnt seem to drop much in price. Hence they trade the old model for a new one. Any money off the next version is still money off. It's why people buy used copies in the first place, to save cash, no matter how little.

What I think people will have to settle for is a PS4 that possibly outsells the Xbox One, but the Xbox One won't be a sales flop. It's going to succeed, because as stunning as this might seem for many, there is and will be a market for it. It isn't the case that so many consumers out there that have already bought Xbox Ones simply all don't understand, or are too stupid to know what they're buying, which seems to be the popular opinion of many on the internet who are somehow of the belief they know better than other people. The Xbox One day one edition consoles on Amazon sold out of their entire stock in like 2 or 3 hours. Sure, this alone isn't indicative of what's going to be taking place on the sales front. But it tells you one thing: there ARE people who are excited to buy this thing.

That example that IRAPT used. I've seen examples like that, too, and I've told people what the honest differences are as well, and some did exactly what he suggested that person he talked to did, but quite a few said they have solid internet and really don't like giving their games to people anymore, because they never get them back in the condition that they gave them to the person in the first place. So they think it's cool they can let people share and play their games without giving them their physical game discs. This one guy talked about all the games that he bought for his Xbox 360 and PS3, and how so many of them were either stolen, claimed lost by people he let borrow them, and realized how all the money he spent rebuying countless games that people lost could've easily been put towards things like affording new consoles or buying other things that caught his interest. He bought GTA4 twice. He bought red dead redemption twice. He bought Batman Arkham City 3 times.

I tell people what the differences are, and some have decided that they want a PS4, some have decided that they want an Xbox One, but what I don't do is that I don't use hyperbolic scare tactics about how Microsoft is planning to screw them over and rip them off. I pointed out valid potential concerns like what if the system that is used to check every 24 hours somehow is shutdown one day thus rendering games unplayable, and what surprised me was the logical response most people had to that. They asked me "But, honestly, you really think something that fucking crazy would ever happen? You'd be talking about millions of people the world over suddenly having the main reason they bought the damn thing all of a sudden being impossible on the system." They also said if Steam and a variety of other internet services can be up and running reliably for the long haul, why can't Microsoft do the same with the resources at their disposal? Some even said that Microsoft would simply just drop the online requirement altogether if they ever became seriously concerned they couldn't maintain support for Xbox One. What I get the sense some other people are doing in "informing" people is essentially scaring the living shit out of folks by telling them as a fact that a day will come in the not so distant future where 100% of their Xbox One games fail to work, and different people have different lines that they are willing to cross, but that's something I could never bring myself to do, because I think it's dishonest and not something a real friend should do to somebody that trusts them to provide them with honest advice. In informing people, I never try to violate a rule of trying too hard to sway someone away from their clearly preferred choice. And if it seems like they are moving away from their original choice as a result of something I said, I make absolutely certain that this is what they want to do by first starting with the obvious question: Which games do you REALLY want to play? Which games do you absolutely refuse to be without? And then go down the other list of concerns, and then ask them which sounds more to their liking.

And if they really seem conflicted about it, I always tell them to go with their original choice, because god forbid they take my advice and get something I talked them into getting and then come away unsatisfied with their purchase. For some people this decision is a big deal. It's literally the only luxury item that some people can afford to buy over the next 5 or so years, so I think friends carry a responsibility to treat them with more respect and not try to scare them towards our preferred purchase.

There it is. The biggest challenge to the Xbox One is one of price. The mainstream audience will treat the rest of the stuff out there as side issues.

The biggest thing sony has going for them with the ps4 right now is not what most hardcores would like to believe it is. It isn't their big used games banner waving at E3. It's the $100 cheaper price tag.

She is going to buy the cheapest of those Nintendos.

Anyways, I still find it kind of funny, that even after E3 they SHOWED no reason why the force a Kinect down your throat.

And don't even think of arguing with voice-control. Voice-control is the most useless thing since voice control. I even read that there is no headset included with the Xbox One, because guess what? You are supposed to chat via Kinect. It is disgusting...

Get rid off effin Kinect and sell your console for 350€ and you will be just fine, MS.
Seriously it is not worth more than that.

All that is well and good Ops but you should have told the guy that both the PS3 and 360 have digital game purchases so if he really didn't want to keep buying discs he could have gone that route.

It's like me saying my car keeps getting stolen so everyone should have to take the bus. Taking away everyone else's options doesn't ever seem like a good plan.

What's more the PS3 had a good model for games sharing that let 5 people play concurrently. You can argue the logistics of it or whether it was a positive or negative impact on the publishers but it was still there.

I'm not really following how all of this being forced on anyone is a benefit to them.

---- EXTENDED READ ----

And that's my whole point with all of this. Around the time of Adam Orth when people were arguing that they were just malicious rumors they were fine arguing that they were a bad thing for gamers, as long as it wasn't true. Fast forward to the Xbox Reveal Event and everyone's mantra was wait for E3. Well now E3 has come and gone and Microsoft is committed to this. And yes, the tune has changed from "Microsoft would never do this, this is a bad thing" to "This is a good thing" or "This isn't so bad".

Again this isn't directed at you Ops, you've been clear from day one you intended to get this no matter what. If it killed a puppy every time you turned it on you'd be getting it :P.

This is obviously just hear-say, and in no way representative of the entire market... but all of my friends who play on xbox360 now are super pumped for the XB1 and plan on getting it right away, regardless of anything they've heard negative about the console. They dont care at all.

Well I'm more than likely getting a PS4 over an Xbox One... if I only choose to get one this Holiday season. I've been trying to get into the PS3 I have collecting dust... and I remind myself why it is collecting dust. Fire up COD4, and it's online lobbies and multiplayer nature is a discombobulated mess compared to Xbox 360. And the controller sucks... sorry it does. And most sites and reviewers will tell you that the 360 controller is superior.

Then I try Last of Us. Rented from gamefly. (looking good here PS4) Last of Us. "one of the best titles this generation..." NOT. The first 10 minutes set too high a bar. Graphics are just OK. Major screen tearing. AI absolutely sucks. I strangle a guy in a gurgling mess 10 feet away from his comrade, and his buddy is none the wiser. I shoot a guy a room a way and some guys 100 feet away don't come running to see what the gunfire is about. I sneak in through a window and sneak up on a guy. Feet clomp down on the floor as I land on the floor, 6 feet away from the guy, and he has no indication I'm there. Talk about linear maps... geez. This game was overhyped to the extreme. I'm probably going to be sending it back soon, if it doesn't improve.

And messing around with the XMB is it called? Total navigation mess. Maybe I'm just not used to it. Xbox 360 dash isn't great... but at least it has a bit more logic to it.

Hopefully if I'm going to drop my money on PS4 first, they will straighten out a lot of what is inferior with PS3 compared to Xbox 360. I'm sure they can bring online up to Xbox 360 standards.

I was trying to sell myself on switching from Xbox to Sony Playstation. My weekend with my dusty PS3 didn't help matters. And I'm sure some of it just takes getting used to.

Oh and by the way... don't buy into the "Last of Us" is a generational gamechanger... its not.

Yes... from here on out Scoobs, you and only you may refer to me as master. When "Last of Us" gets a 10/10 from reviewers/publications and isn't perfect... yeah, I can complain. And on Xbox 360 Live/multiplayer interface/gamepad/functionality is better than PS3... it just a simple fact.

Xbox One will have better multiplayer/online functionality than Xbox 360. PSN will improve... it will just have to and I have confidence in Sony to improve it to at least 360 standards, if not surpass Xbox 360's level of LIVE.
