Yeah somehow it is, but it's the natural flow of things I guess. And as for Grift, I guess he even has to admit that RYSE looks better and better.

Grift you're just jealous because there are no launch-games on PC :D

I mean honestly, aside from good graphics, what is appealing about this game exactly? We've all seen the gameplay, and aside from 15 animated .gifs of cutscenes, none of it has looked like something that resembles a good video game. Are you all just excited to rush through the horrid hack and slash to get to the next pretty cutscene? I dont get it.

Nothing. But that is honestly enough for a launch game to achieve. It is supposed to give an idea of the things a new console is capable of. I remember no launch game for PS3 or XBox 360, where, looking back, I could say: that game has great game-play. But I still remember myslef drooling over the gfx back then.

I mean PGR3 for example looked stunning, but after about 2 weeks of playing it, I went back to PGR2 which was multiple times better in the game-play departement. But at the end of the day, I bought the 360 day one, because I was a gfx whore...

As a HUGE fan of action adventure games (I dont think I need to tell that to anyone around here ;) ), I actually find Ryse VERY uneappealing. The combat looks very clunky and uninspired. Graphics are amazing but that's about it for me. Crytek (after FarCry 1) have only managed to produce impressive looking games that simplay fall flat when it comes t gameplay....

First and foremost, I'm huge fan of the combat in the batman arkham games, and I think the core of this game's combat shares similarities with those games. It isn't even subtle. You can tell the manner in which the counter system works in this game that the Batman games was the inspiration. Honestly, even the executions are pretty much the equivalent of the Batman Arkham game combat finishers, except they actually allow you to choose when and where you want to initiate them, whether you want to initiate a finisher on multiple opponents at the same time, and if you want, you can attempt to try to get the timing just right to get one of 3 possible gameplay bonuses (More exp, more health, or more damage). You can also turn off those prompts that tell you which button to press, making it so that you have to learn which buttons require pressing based on experience with an execution, and being able to properly identify, based on what animations the main character is performing, what to do.

There are even a variety of context sensitive executions based on your surrounding environment, which adds a dynamic that I like. Smash someone's head into a wall, kick them to send them flying from somewhere high up 300 style, impale people into spikes, jam your shield into their throats while they're submerged into water, run somebody through with your sword, and then force them into a burning flame. It goes on and on. There's a lot of cool executions in the game.

Based on the just batman observation alone, along with the game being third person, it instantly caught my interest. I expected it to be first person, which is something I wouldn't have been as excited about.

However, I then found out that the game turns out to be a whole lot more story and character driven, with a bigger focus on high production value and epic, set piece battles than I was honestly ever expecting this game to be. They're going for more of a movie style approach. I never pegged this game for being anywhere quite as ambitious as it's turning out to be. I went from thinking of this game as something far more straightforward, to now believing there's a grander scope.

Some character info released.

http://news.xbox.com/2013/07/games-ryse-sdcc-annou...
Marius. The hero of “Ryse: Son of Rome,” Marius is a young soldier with a strong sense of duty who is completely dedicated to Rome and her ideals. Initially eager to fight against Rome’s enemies and expand the Empire, he soon realizes that Rome is vulnerable to an even more insidious threat than the barbarians he faces on the battlefield. Ever loyal to Rome, he resolves to rid the Empire of her true enemies.

Vitallion. A wise and charismatic general who has served Rome for decades, Vitallion has fought in many campaigns and serves as a mentor to Marius. As events transpire he begins to wonder if duty has its limits, and whether self-restraint is always the correct course of action.

Nero. Nero, Emperor of Rome, struggles to maintain his grip on power. He promotes his two sons Commodus and Basillius to powerful positions, letting them take control of the rebellious province of Britannia. Nero feels threaten by all potential rivals and exacts ruthless retribution against anyone who crosses him.

Commodus and Basillius. As governor of Britannia, Nero’s eldest son, Commodus, sees himself as a god, and the people of Britannia as his subjects. His reign is characterized by brutal repression. Nero’s youngest son, Basillius, enjoys anything carnal or cruel. At the Colosseum he delights in watching gladiators kill each other, and lords over the terrified slaves he keeps in his harem in the bowels of the structure.

Boudica. The daughter of King Oswald, the ruler of the Britons. Strong and resilient, Boudica hates Rome, and with good reason: under Roman rule, her people are made to suffer horribly. When her father faces horrific retribution from a perceived insult, it galvanizes Boudica and she rallies her people to rise against their oppressors. Boudica is a principled woman and has the will to go to the ends of the world to save her people.

Oswald. Benevolent king of the Britons. He leads a rebellion against the tyrannical rule of Rome, but when the Romans brutally repress the rebels, Oswald submits to Roman dominance in hopes this will spare his people. His naivety leaves him vulnerable to the Romans.

Glott. Enigmatic leader of the Northern barbarians, rumored to be more beast than man. Very little is known about him except that he is fiercely independent and will make war on both the Romans and Oswald’s tribe.

The Spirit Gods. Immortal spirit, one who watches over humanity, guides Marius. She appears in mortal form, but radiates an otherworldly aura. Another (known in mortal form as Aquilo) seeks the destruction of Rome and allies himself with her enemies.
Yea, apparently there are also mythological elements to this game, too, which is a twist I didn't initially anticipate, but that of course doesn't mean it'll be as extreme in that regard as God of War. I still prefer for it to be less like god of war, and instead more grounded and realistic. I want something from around this time period, but I don't want a God of War ripoff.

I watched the entire 45 minute comic con panel, and it sounds really exciting.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0kd3xGAOf2U

I watched all the dev diaries, the sword of Damocles trailer, I've done a lot of reading up on the story, especially both editions of the Damocles graphics novels they put out so far. Still waiting on part 3.

http://www.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-one/games/ryse/comi...

Based on all I've seen and read of the singleplayer story (don't plan on bothering with MP), it sounds like my kind of game. The main character sounds like he's more than just your typical, "Hey look, I'm a badass" style of character. He seems like he might offer a little bit more depth, and a few more layers to his character than what you would commonly come to expect, and that's never a bad thing. I feel this game very clearly sets itself apart from practically any other game being released at launch. It's something different from a shooter, a racer or even a sports title, and I think that's a plus. I don't have an issue with any of those other games, but I'm more drawn to something a little different, which is why I'm also excited about Crimson Dragon. I'm just digging the overall approach that I see from this game, and that makes it something I want to support, because I would like to see more games like this. Quantum Break is yet another example of a game I would be going crazy over if it were at launch. That one is a shooter, sure, but the spectacle, the excitement, the story and character concepts. These are my kinds of games. It's why I don't see Halo as just another first person shooter, because I'm so interested in the universe and characters. I don't know how good Ryse will be, but it falls perfectly in line with the kind of game that appeals strongly to my personal tastes as a gamer.

In general, I always gravitate to exciting story or character driven games that are big on spectacle and production value. That fact involving me has been quite well known for a long time. So there's no way in a million years I could ever pass up this game at launch.

Another major aspect of why this game interests me is simply because it reminds me of Spartacus, the television series. I know it has nothing to do with that, but I see this as my best shot at a next generation Spartacus game, and there's certainly a lot of similarities. And if all this wasn't enough, the game also has some exploration in it. I sure as hell wasn't expecting that. Probably not massive exploration, but Crytek have been saying that there's a lot more exploration in this game than people expect, and based on what I saw from that eb expo video that gamespot uploaded, it would seem so. Even light exploration, I honestly wasn't expecting any. I wasn't expecting to walk up to guards talking amongst themselves, and be able to stay out of site for awhile and listen. I wasn't expecting a focus on monologues from the main character during gameplay to help tell the story, along with attempts to get you to focus on specific scenes of brutality. I expected a more straightforward scenario for this game. We bring you here, fight. Now we bring you here, fight some more. Sure, you're going from place to place to fight in Ryse, and generally most games are like this, or they aren't games, but not all of them even bother with some of the storytelling devices being used in Ryse, particularly with regards to how Ryse makes use of camera angles in helping to tell its story. I simply wouldn't be me if I wasn't excited about this kind of game at launch.

And, yes, the amazing graphics certainly don't hurt things either. It's a beautiful showcase game for a new system, and if I can have fun with a game that has excites me while having it constantly blow me away as is expected of a game on a new system, then I'm all for that. The focus on the gifs is largely graphics, yes, but the other much more important focus, for me anyway, is the production value and some of the story scenarios. You're not a tiny bit interested on who it was that called our to the game's main character, and what it could end up leading to? I have a ton of links to articles about this game, with a variety of information within that I think warrants excitement, but that would make an already long post even longer. Either way, you have the reasons for why I'm excited about the game. They aren't reasons that other people have to agree with, of course.

And it seems practically confirmed you possibly also get to play as Damocles himself, according to the game's cinematic director from the ryse comic con panel.

I really don't mind people being critical of the gameplay, that's fair game. But a graphical showcase like this from Crytek creates a very clear standard going forward. The potential is there if developers are willing to make the effort.

I think the game looks great (graphics.. lol.. the rest still looks awful) but I wouldn't be very happy with the bar being @ 900p, even if it made their game look better. That sends a pretty powerful message to folks. Accurate or not. Then we have people arguing that 900p > 1080p and all that hilarious shit.

Also: A low resolution dithered GIF is still a really terrible way of showing a next-gen game that conveniently hides a lot of flaws.

It would be silly to deny that it's attractive. There is some heavy irony surrounding Optimism's interest specifically, but we've run circles around that one ;)

I think the problem is that /some of/ us are amazed at the graphics, and we are just genuinely impressed at how good it looks. I don't give a shit if the game was meant to be a 48845p and then it wasn't. It doesn't take away anything from this game. So it's very sad and annoying for some people to keep reiterating the same crap no one objectively *really* gives a damn about. It's like someone winning the lottery, and me going "But you still have to pay 10 million in taxes dude, that really sucks you have to admit." Here, take a million if I don't have to hear that crap again.

Get the above mindset and spread it over other aspects, add more games, throw in some comparisons, and add a little (or a ton) of fanboy on the side and you get yourself a sad state.

This thread, and many others are full of people with a major problem of confirmation bias.

-------------------------

Anyways, that's that. As for this game's gameplay, I don't think I've seen a video where I went "that looks fun!", but it'd be nice for it to complement the visuals though.

I acknowledge the irony of the whole thing. I haven't been the biggest fan of Crytek's previous games (putting it mildly to say the least), which is certainly true, but this is vastly different from the stuff they've made before. It's a different kind of approach for them as a development studio. I find it pretty interesting, and I hope it turns out to be a very solid game. Either way, they have my attention. I hold no grudges in gaming. If a dev whose games I didn't like all that much is making me eat a bit of crow now, I'm okay with that.

Yea, nice trolling. If you can't see the similarities, then you're simply ignoring them for reasons beyond the game itself. Anyone with an ounce of interest in this game would see that the gameplay has potential, especially when someone that knows what they're doing is taking control. There is footage that makes the gameplay look really bad, but then there's footage where the gameplay looks quite good absent bugs bringing down the experience, and you begin to see where they're going with it. But why am I wasting time telling this to someone that has zero interest in actually finding out about the game? Trolling it at every turn is more fun, obviously. Anyway, I said all I will on the matter. Agree to disagree. :)

You graphics whores... you know why developers do sub 1080, because most people can't tell, even side by side, the difference between 1080p and 720p, so why not 900p?

I do animation and motion graphics for a living, so I'm a bit of a graphics whore as well. Note my username. Granted MS and Sony should be ashamed of making hardware in 2013, that can't pump a game out at 1080p at 60fps.

I'd be willing to bet that most people on these forums would find it difficult to tell the difference between 1080p and 720p.

Developers do 900p because of hardware limitations and because this is the very start of this new generation, and because they can get away with it because the general public doesn't care if it isn't 1080p because they can't really tell.

I've played the multiplayer of RYSE and the combat is indeed very similar to Batman in terms of mechanics, it's "snapping" quite nicely in addition with [optional] cool finishers. But based on your assumption I guess you played it as well - what exactly didn't you like about the combat? I thought it felt very responsive.

Game changer + Windows Phone + Windows tablets in the same sentence. That's wishful thinking. On the other hand.. leaving the failure of the Windows store out of the picture: How much access to the hardware do apps get? Can individuals actually write and launch unsigned code for the Xbox One? That would be pretty interesting. But I'll wait until we see XBMC and emulation w/ full low level hardware access. That would be legitimately exciting.. but seems like a bit of a pipe dream.

Maybe it will help Windows 8? Maybe?

We need more info. It seems very unlikely that they would allow any app to be published on Xbox One and even less likely that they'd allow individuals to develop and execute unsigned code without jumping through some hoops first. You can't even publish an Indie game on Xbox 360 without doing Q&A first. There has to be more to this. Especially since Microsoft isn't bragging about it.

Heck.. Windows Phone/RT/x86 apps aren't even cross compatible. You've got some work to do before you approach unification.
