I have a windows phone and a surface pro and while i love the UI, the apps are practically worthless. Most well known apps on android and iOS are non existent. And when they are there they're not even official, instead you get 2000 basement app developed versions that are usually pretty shit.

Example - Instead of an official soundcloud app, you instead have something called "sounddrivin"....It's just not a platform people seem interested in supporting, which sucks for a windows phone user. But oh well, what can you do.

I imagine RT will eventually be what phones run anyway.. the actual phone OS is going to die out. It's the only thing that makes RT make sense.

Compatibility isn't even what would make this a legitimately big deal.

There's a couple apps I certainly wouldn't mind having on the Xbox One. Halo: Spartan Assault is a good start, Shazam, Evernote, The Jon Stewart Daily Show app. And while we're at it, why not Megatube, although I have a funny feeling that app may be reigned in a little, since it allows direct downloading videos on youtube, as well as instantly converting videos into audio that gets saved on your device. Flixster is another cool app I wouldn't mind, and a few other personal favorites that I have and believe fit quite well in a living room environment. Kinect would probably also work quite well with more than just a few of them also.

Even better, it may lead to some awesome direct MKV support.

Xbox Music is pretty much a killer app as far as Xbox One integration is concerned, and I also wouldn't mind the Mail app from Windows 8, which is much more advanced and full featured now in Windows 8.1 And why stop there, the built in Calendar app would be awesome also. And between the teamviewer and remote desktop apps, you could even control your windows PCs remotely from an Xbox One. Sure some of these apps will need some kind of update to improve basic usability on Xbox One, but the potential is certainly there, and pretty much all of them would work on Xbox One right out of the box.

I am hugely skeptical that we will see the likes of VLC and XBMC on Xbox One. This "all apps" stuff seems rather suspect. Even more suspect is the idea of emulation with unchecked access to the hardware.

Free, open access to the hardware is simply exceptional if true, but it's most likely not.

Compatibility isn't what would make this a big deal (Optimus may be the only W8 app user) and ports of Netflix and Shazam certainly won't make this a game-changer.

LOL, you're right about that. I jumped the gun on the Halo: Spartan Assault stuff, even if a lot of the code would be reusable for a potential Xbox One port. Yea, I have my doubts about MKV support also, but it would sure be nice.

Hey, and as far as being the only W8 app user, I'll have you know that our numbers have effectively tripled in just the last week. We now stand at a very intimidating 6, and growing fast. Perhaps not a game changer in the overall competitive sense and how it impacts other products by comparison, but a pretty nice luxury nonetheless. It's even better if you've actually become a bit of a fan of certain W8 apps as I certainly have. They started out incredibly bare bones and lacking in functionality and features, but as they've constantly seen updates (There have probably been upwards of 15 or more major and minor updates to all core w8 apps, if I'm not mistaken) that have introduced new functionality and features, you begin to see the real potential of what a more powerful Metro style app can be. I didn't become a big fan of the mail app, for example, until the feature list and versatility of it grew, so having that on the Xbox One would be a really nice touch, I think.

Xbox Music is something I personally see as a killer app for xbox one. There's all kinds of amazing integration potential with a videogame console. I like access to Windows 8 apps as a possibility for the system, because it gives you a level of control to customize your videogame console experience in a way that has never been possible before. As it stands now, we are more or less spoon fed our miscellaneous console apps, which isn't always a bad thing, because then you're more or less assured a certain level of consideration with regards to platform specific usability along the lines of what's done with Twitch, Skype, NFL Fantasy, TV and a range of other things on the Xbox One, but the potential of being able to make our own choices from a more open and significant app ecosystem is pretty cool.

The metro interface is pretty much all around awful. I wasn't too hot on the concept, but having actually used it, I now think it's absolutely terrible. And not just on desktops. It's a better, but not great tablet UI.

The desktop charms? Oh lord, it's terrible. Stardock really did save the usability of Windows 8 on the desktop. And it's no wonder that the only real interest in Surface is in the Pro.

Windows 8.1 is a big improvement but is still pretty bad in stock form. The only reason to run it is because you have to in order to get the latest DirectX and WDDM.
but the potential of being able to make our own choices from a more open and significant app ecosystem is pretty cool.
That's the part that is significant. Compatibility with the current Windows app store is not in itself very exciting, but if they really do allow a more open approach to publishing "apps" on the Xbox One, including low level access to the hardware.. well.. that could be something. But, as we've already discussed, it seems unlikely that they would leave such a thing unchecked.

This could be amazing or it could be Skype and Netflix and Shazaam. The devil is in the details.

It could even wind up being more significant to Windows 8 than it is to the Xbox if it helps attract developers to the app store. Especially true if there are any restrictions involved in getting content on the One.

lol... do people even use Windows 8 apps on Windows 8? Are there even Windows 8 apps?
There's like well over 100k, granted 95% are trash just like any app store but Windows 8 is less than a year old and the situation will only get better.

Just having the ability to play MKVs with subtitles is a game changer for me. These apps already exist in the store and VLC is on its way.

Also, i'd love to be able to share my Surface/PC desktop wirelessly to my XO using something like Splashtop. A bit like Air play with the Apple TV.

If it does end up being all store apps then the potential really is huge, not to mention the cool stuff that people could do with Kinect.

Anyway, Ryse offscreen footage - http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedd...

I think this is the smoothest the game has looked. Doesn't look as janky as those vidocs. I think the most understated feature is how the camera adapts to show everyone within striking distance. Pretty rare to do that well in this genre.

Still, the only thing holding this game back visually is the animation blending, but it's at least a lot better than before.

I really enjoyed the combat in Multiplayer when I played it 3 weeks ago. It felt very snapping, he always chose the right person to block. The only thing I didn't like so much were the fire effects in the Arena. Looked kinda cheap. But according to Penello the demo-builds [even those on tour now] are the same since E3, so I guess we'll see the new 900p-look shorty before launch in the reviews.

$250? That's half the price of the console. This is a new IP, unproven. Giving it the "flagship" treatment is just plain over-reaching. Can't they wait until we legitimately attach any real value to it?
