There has been plenty of evidence that Microsoft is moving on 7" tablets soon.

But that's mighty dated. Right?

I'm not sure who really wants a 7" Xbox Tablet though. That seems pretty stupid to me.

"The next Xbox is code-named Durango. And we have talked for a while about this notion that there might be another version of the Xbox that was just aimed at entertainment—a non-gaming device. That device was code-named 'Yumo' and they're not making it. They may make one in the future, but it's not happening this year.

"So the new Xbox that comes out this year will just be the Xbox. And I mentioned before they're also going to sell a new Xbox 360 code-named 'Stingray' that will be $99. And you might look at that as two things: backwards compatibility, obviously, suggesting—I don't actually know this for a fact, but based on the fact that they're making one—I don't think that the new Xbox will play 360 games. But that I don't actually know, that I'm guessing. But, the other one is that, $99, that's a real coo price. And so we know that the Xbox 360 does Netflix, Hulu Plus, yada yada yada, and you can make the argument that's kind of a low cost entertainment device, too.

"Durango is going to be expensive [laughs], you know $500, $300 for the subscription, that kind of thing, but you know, Blu-ray, blah blah blah, but the thing that interest me, going back and looking at some of the stuff I got a long time ago, it actually says 'must be internet-connected to use' in the notes. And that's all I have, but it does say that.

[Is that a bad thing?]

"I don't know because I don't know what it means. You know, when you look at some of the stories that were coming out this week about, you know, I saw a headline that said something like 'Next Xbox could be okay without an internet connection for as long as 3 minutes' or something like that. I don't even know what that means, so for me, Xbox 360 is almost entirely an online experience. Most of the games I play are multiplayer, where you're playing against other people online. Or you're using it as an entertainment device when you're connected to a service like Netflix or Xbox video, so that is an internet-connected device. In this phrase, it says 'must be internet-connected to use', you know, that suggests that you can't even boot into the UI and play—I don't know, I don't know, I don't have one.

"Originally, they were going to announce this thing in April—April 24—now they're going to announce it May 21. We know there are events occuring this year where we're going to learn more about Durango.

[And it's a fourth quarter release, right?]

"Early November, yeah. E3 is going to occur. BUILD is going to occur in San Francisco in June when they're going to talk about the developer story because it's a Windows 8 device. It's going to have the same, or basically the same, developer tools and developer APIs and all that kind of stuff. So I think there's a lot information to come, but I look at all this stuff that I've seen about Durango and I think, 'it's all positive.' I don't really see any bad news here at all. Like to me, everything I've seen about this is really positive. It's amazing to me that, based on like no information at all, everyone is like freaking out about everything. Aside from this online thing, by the way, the number one question I've gotten from people is, 'What does it look like?' Who gives a shit what it looks like?

"I've actually heard from, by the way not one or two people, several people who've said, 'based on what I've seen, Sony is going to blow them away.' Based on what you've seen? You've seen nothing. What are you talking about? No, but you've seen literally nothing from Microsoft.

[I don't think that's even a possibility considering how many people use Xbox LIVE... You're not going to have this mass Xbox audience jumping to Sony.]

"The problem Microsoft has has nothing to do with Sony or Nintendo anymore, it's Roku and AppleTV. The market for hardcore video games, the market of people will always buy the next Gears of War game, the next Halo game, the next Call of Duty game, it's fairly finite. It's a decent market, yada yada yada, it's not the market for tablets, it's not the market for smartphones.
Holy shit. What were they thinking. Xbox gold to play online this gen and now online for 720 to work ? Sure some one will be able to hack it and make it work but won't be able to get into network. There is hardly any positive thing about 720. WTF ?

Don't worry. Microsoft will spin this as some kind of awesome consumer thing. And Optimus will eat it right up ;)
The next Xbox should and probably will be always-on because this is the best way to get more people on Xbox Live. I'm pretty sure Microsoft doesn't care about losing a few offline-only customers, as the lost revenue could be easily offset by the number of people who actually decide to take their consoles online.
This insight is probably the best rational for why this makes sense. For Microsoft. A lot of gamer's are still going to fucking hate it. Combined with their dwindling stable of first party developers, it does seem a bit dire. For the gamer.

I think there's still a path to financial success for Microsoft. The online revenue stream is huge. I'm just not buying it if this is the case.

I think they need a win here. Ballmer certainly does! I'm one of those rare exceptions that has a mountain of respect for the man, but that doesn't mean I think he's steering the ship in the right direction.

I'm getting the next Xbox, period. Their spin will not help or hurt that reality, so technically I don't have anything to eat up. I'm as certain about getting the next xbox as I was about the next playstation before that was even announced, and I'm going to get the Wii-U also, and there's a ton of actual confirmed shitty news about that system.

There are games I want and they are guaranteed to not be on the same platform, so, simply put, I need and want them all. I may follow the information on these consoles religiously, but the day to day flow of news and information, no matter how negative it might seem, hasn't affected my planned purchases in the least. The only way that I could waver on either console purchase is if I somehow had confirmation that there would be no Halo, that there wouldn't be another Uncharted, or that another Xenoblade isn't happening on the Wii-U. Each of those games by themselves, I think, justify the purchase of each of those machines. There's one thing Microsoft could do to make me say fuck off to the next xbox, a required gold subscription, even with Halo. And I honestly don't feel they are that stupid. The rest of the stuff I've heard, while I would of course prefer the console to be without them (persistent online connection, no used games), I'm more than prepared to deal with. But, again, we have no real confirmation that any of this stuff is happening and the details are very important. Thurrot is one of the most well informed Microsoft insiders out there, and even he doesn't know the details for certain. And something isn't actually confirmed until it's actually confirmed.

So...

I think the better question right now is: why would you? But there's really only one answer, isn't there? It's Halo. And after Halo 4.. that's not enough for me anymore.

And that's fine. Once upon a time it's why I enthusiastically bought an Xbox 360. But their first party is just so... absent from this equation. As far as I'm concerned, Microsoft is back at square one. They need to give me a new reason to want their platform. And so far, speculation has been working against that. I'll certainly give them a fair shake come May, but my expectations are extraordinarily low at this point.

It's a struggle to imagine what they could do to win me over again.

Two comments about Xbox v.Next and always on. 1) A non-connected 360 is useless to me today. 2) Roku is also always-on. Where's the outrage?
Paul Thurrott is really killing it on twitter.

1) A non-connected 360 is useful to millions of other gamers.
2) Roku? Is he taking pointers from Adam Orth now? I'm looking forward to more awful analogies!

Yes this could very well be the reason?, sucks for allot of gamers!, come May Reveal and June E3 MS will have to show me some New IP's i care about if they want my $$$ (Sony too).

No. Both take place in front of an HDTV with a Ethernet cable and a broadband connection. If my net is down, so is my electricity.

"always online" benefits NO ONE other than MS

The only people that can not see the issue are people that have never really used it before

The second their connection and their current game session ends losing there game session (ubisoft) or just completed a real hard part on the hardest setting (diablo 3) and you have to do it again..

Let alone not been able to play your games when on holiday and no internet (see people who work away from home as well)

i just can NOT understand why people are defending it.. i just can not grasp it.

I'm starting to think they're pushing for a broader picture with the next Xbox. Maybe the resurgence of the IPTV/set-top box concept is looking more realistic than we thought. As crazy as it is. It's no more crazy than a lot of these other "leaks."

It would still probably push me out, but it also explains away a lot of the rumors. I don't think I'd even call such a device a video game console anymore.

New Rumors: The next Xbox will cost $500 for the standard model or $300 for the “subscription” model, require an internet connection, and launch in “early November,” according to sources of WhatTheTech‘s Paul Thurrott.

Well, I can respect that. Everybody has their own decision to make, and obviously I don't expect everyone to share the same opinion I do. Halo pretty much is the reason, because while I really like Forza as well, I'm probably not going to buy a console for it. And clearly there's something I want far more than Halo, and that would be more jrpgs from Sakaguchi and Mistwalker or a sequel to Blue Dragon, but those aren't as realistic an expectation as a new Halo title, especially since we're dealing with Microsoft that will never compete well in Japan. I'm still hoping Nintendo works with Mistwalker again, or Sony decides to contract them for some First Party games. If only Square's console jrpgs lately were as good as some of their better DS or 3DS releases. At least Atlus can always be counted on, even if they stick with the PS2. :)
