this can't possibly be true
Unconfirmed reports on ConsoleDeals.co.uk suggest that retail’s slice will be as little as ten per cent. That’s a significant cut from what it has become accustomed to from pre-owned sales and more in line with what they would receive from the sale of a new game – hence, the value of the pre-owned market to the retailer is effectively destroyed.

These same unconfirmed reports also suggest that the activation cost for consumers buying or borrowing pre-owned software will be £35.

UPDATE: Many readers are asking whether the £35 will be additional cost on top of the price of buying the game. No, we believe that the £35 figure – which is not our number, incidentally – would cover the entire transaction. If correct this would leave retail with a cut per sale of around £3.50.
35 quid for a used game? retail seems to get absolutely fuck all.

They sound deadly serious about what the cloud can make possible on the new xbox. Specific examples included.
And I'm deadly serious, when I say they will find a way to monetize the cloud rendering, if they get the chance. Those servers powering the cloud aren't free, and
MS doesn't seem interested in giving any value added services anymore. They will fund these servers on the backs of the Xbox faithful like you and me.

Xbox Platinum anyone for $100, to offer the premium cloud experience.

It really feels like MS are being pushed around by publishers like EA to make these silly anti consumer choices, at what meeting did they decide that it was wise to piss their fan base off.

Better on cheaper games in the hope you will sell more games in the long run is misplaced if everyone jumps ship to PS4. (that being said we aren't 100% sure what Sony plan to do with second hand games yet so I guess we should be prepared)

Publishers and MS taking a cut. There's no way we'll continue to see today's used pricing when everyone is charging you a fee for buying and selling used software.

It's a crock of shit and it's generally an anti-consumer practice. If the competition doesn't follow, I'd be hard pressed to understand why anyone would accept it.

Update: You, the shopper, won't have to pay the activation fee for a used Xbox One game - the shop will. Therefore, the price you see on a second-hand Xbox One game in a shop is the price you'll pay to be able to play it.

That's what a high-ranking UK industry source explained to me this afternoon.

The reason there's all this confusion is because Microsoft hasn't decided what the activation fee will be yet. The £35 figure reported in the story below sounds too high - perhaps it includes the shop's sale price as well.

My source confirmed that part of that activation fee will go to a publisher and part to Microsoft.

What this means for second-hand games is that Microsoft effectively controls how much they cost, because it controls the activation fee. Whether that fee will move up or down or diminish over time isn't clear. But it does mean second-hand games will probably be more expensive than they are now.

My source didn't know what Sony was up to but doubts the PlayStation maker will do the same thing, not because it's angelic but because it lacks the kind of pricey infrastructure something like this requires.

Still garbage no matter who pays it, its extra money is still there since they will bump its value up.
Either that, or wait for the price to be so low to the point you dont mind it, then buy it...unless I misunderstood it lol

That sounds really convoluted, MS deserve to crash and burn this gen.

Sounds like the shop is doing the hard work and the Publisher and MS walk away with all the cash, can't see that lasting long.

They're not taking them away! They're just charging fees for them!

And of course it's convoluted. Could you imagine if Steam let you sell your games? That's essentially what this is.

I don't think it's going to work too well.

Well thats what the post above is suggesting, games will be cheaper because publishers and MS can make more money from second hand games.

But something tells me its not going to be as plain cut as that.

It will be interesting to see how Sony would react if games were £10-£20 cheaper on Xbones and how that would effect consumers perception of Ps4.

Ridiculous. If they did that they'd run the risk of splitting their entire install base between Gold and Platinum users. Game Studios would never adopt because they wouldn't know how to develop games for the user base. It would never get off the ground.

As for the rest of it. Publisher and devs have ALWAYS wanted their cut of used game sales, this has been a loooooooooooooong time coming guys. Game devs think that used game sales are worse than piracy. You all should google a few articles and find out just how many of your favorite studios feel that way. They are the ones who have been aggressively pushing for this behind the scenes. They have wanted to attack this business model for decades.

Yea never mind lending games to friends and family or giving them away, as long as publishers get their money who cares if we suffer in the long term.

I am sure there are much better ways of doing this.

I am pretty easy going with DRM and digital content, but having it for physical media is just silly, whats next having to register your Blu-Rays ?
