Simon: In this case, yes. I trust he'd praise a silent hill game that's actually good, even though any such praise would be woven in to his typical cynical game bashing :)

The only reason i even mentioned ZP is because that guy shares my love for SH2, and also my hatred for origins for being complete crap. To sum it up my feelings towards the series seem to match up pretty well with his, from what i can tell in the "reviews" ;)

Sure, I thinkYahtzee is a clever guy which is what makes Zero Punctuation work, as opposed to Angry Videogame Nerd who's just... basically lucky when his screaming and cursing antics hit the right mark.

And yet I still wouldn't use any of his videos to gauge whether I'd like a game. Dominic, my partner in crime at Mode-7, played Homecoming and thought it was fine. So did Korndog on here.. so it's like.. There's some slagging off out of proportion with what a normal human would feel about it. Then again I'm an atypical swede in that regard, we're usually extremely narrow in our tastes I find. Whereas.. well, I completed Alone in The Dark this wednesday, need I say more. :D

I love the look of it, but Dawn of Mana and Kingdom Hearts keep me wary of Square's action RPG prowess these days.

Not saying KH is a bad game it's just that I hate it.

Yeah I am stoked for it. I really liked Umbrella Chronicles, and I just finished the Director's Cut mode of House of The Dead: Overkill yesterday and that game is fucking superb.

This resurgence of on rails shooters really excites me, there is SO MUCH you can do with an experience that directed and Overkill totally goes wild with the pacing and freqency of enemies. Expect an M7 opinion of that in the coming days.

I think pacing wise this game has a lot to answer for because UC had some problems with three quarters of it being way too slow. Zombies basically stood around waiting to be shot, there was little to no urgency to any of the proceedings. According to this trailer they've really worked on speeding things up though, and it looks pretty phenomenal. I mean UC was a looker too, but the shadowing in this one really stands out.

Between this, Dead Space Extraction and Overkill, the race is really on right now for which rails shooter can offer the wildest ride on the Wii, and that's something that has NEVER HAPPENED to the genre before. I think this is a great opportunity for it to evolve and deliver the roller coaster of madness it has the potential to offer.

Gamekyo is your friend. They always get media on titles that you haven't already seen six billion times somewhere else. There's some shadyness to it sometimes I guess, like the recent Red Steel 2 scans on there which I take it have to be from may's Nintendo Power, but there's also some legitemate stuff that nobody else seems to notice.

In particular for formats not as in your face as the 360.

Ju-On director's videogame debut "Feel" looks like another title I best avoid considering what a gigantic pussy I am.

Yeah, Fatal Frame/Project Zero already has some of the same imagery and those games fucking.. paralyze me. I managed to get through 3 with a friend, but there were moments in that game that were just.... UNFAIRLY creepy. It's kinda set up like The Room, so you're going to sleep in your apartment where you live with your... sister I believe it was. So yeah, you kinda have some minor tasks to do in your apartment between the creep-out fests that are the "levels" of the game.

They - like SH4 before it - set up this feeling of being safe in "the real world" and then play on that to mentally rape you.

I sort of have this beef with SH the room. I love the setup and story but the game as a game sucks ass. Also it's not particularly scary...i'm still totally in love with SH2 though. I think that is and will be the greatest horror game ever.

I never really got in to fatal frame...i tried the first two games but never got very far and i never found them very scary either. Are the fatal frame games and this related somehow? Guess it doesn't really matter since i won't be playig it anyway (being a wii game and all).

SH4 is the only Silent Hill I managed to complete so yeah, it's not that scary. I actually enjoy the puzzles and stuff of the other Silent Hill games much more, but I find them extremely unnerving so I have genuine trouble playing on.

Project Zero/Fatal Frame are kinda dull thematically. The stories are stupidly clichéd for the most part, but they do kinda pull you in in a different type of japanese horror than Silent Hill do. They're also arguably better GAMES than Silent Hill, with proper combo/point systems for combat with puzzles interwoven throughout. However I think just in terms of subject matter they balance eachother out, with SH being infinitely more interesting for all sorts of reasons, and for me with my relative pussyness I really need a good reason to push on in a horror game. Silent Hill's suggestive storytelling and bizarre imagery give me that incentive, whereas Project Zero at some point just became a matter of "shall we play on and see if our psyches survive this?"

The reason I find Project Zero scarier than Silent Hill - because I do - is simply because whereas Silent Hill just makes you uneasy with its atmosphere and locales (which is still enough to make me pass out from fear), never resorting to "cheap scares", Project Zero sets you up in a similar way but DOES capitalise on the jump-out-of-your-chair opportunities that arise. There's also the camera combat which sees you waiting for the longest possible time before "shooting" an enemy.. and some of them.... KINDA FREAKY when they get close and.... reveal themselves. Ahem.

Other times you're taking a picture of something seemingly innocent, but the picture in your camera tells the true tale. :O

Feel and Project Zero have nothing to do with one another no. Project Zero have been around forever and are on their fourth entry now with the Wii one, "Mask of The Lunar Eclipse".

I think that's what makes silent hill such a great experience for me; the horror is all in your head. I mean, one of the scariest scenes in the game, for me, is when you see pyramid head for the first time behind some bars. He just stands there and it freaks me out BIG time. Silent hill makes me fear what might be around the next corner so much that each door and each turn becomes an obstacle...and that kind of horror, to me, is so much greater than any jump scare can ever hope to be :)

I agree, and it's a much more sophisticated kind of horror. That said, it's not like PZ gets by on classic Resident Evil style elements, it just gets you riled up from being unnerving in its own way, and when you approach a well, or a dark corner in the attic, it knows to use those moments albeit sparingly, so that you never know if something DOES appear suddenly in those places.

I concur that the constant unease that Silent Hill gives you is more commendable, and it's more successful in the long run because it doesn't cheapen its atmosphere by making it about the "climax" of a jump scare, but at the same time I've never been so paralyzed with fear in SH as I was when I had to crawl under the floor in an old japanese temple in Project Zero and something *did* happen.

Or when a camera angle in the apartment - after having walked past there many times prior - suddenly, without warning or audio cue, changed to reveal something.
