Awesome. Multiple endings? This could easily bet a game that you need to play at least twice to get the most out of.. hell.. even without a branching story. Just considering the variety in plasmids, it's easy to see how this game could have plenty of replay value.

Sooner or later, I think it's worth the game industry moving towards movie style reviews...like 1 or 5 stars. A game is worth playing or it's not.

Critiquing individual aspects like graphics, sound etc and percentages don't mean a whole lot to me. What the hell is the difference between 94% and 95%.

Perhaps if they remove the focus on some abstract score, the text of the reviews will get better.

I think Bioshock is a 5/5 or 10/10 game whichever way you look at it, but translating that to a percentage, like 100% doesn't make sense anymore, unless you're amalgamating lots of reviews.

Some places do that. Next Generation used to.

I agree. But I think IGN's breakdown of elements is a good way to summerize the various elements as well. Games have more dynamic and divergent elements than movies, so taking into consideration the many elements of a game -- some people are drawn to some over and above others -- is important. A great movie (story, acting, direction and setting, etc) with crappy CGI is still a great movie. A game with great story, acting, direction, setting but horrible graphics (really poor framerate, barbarian looks) can impact the game to the point of unplayability.

Likewise, breaking down where the value of the title is, and how it compares to other gaming experiences, is relevant. Especially in MP games.

The fans have spoken. Concerning the graphics of the Halo 3 Beta: "There's so many little effects and things going on that make this game pretty much 2nd only to Gears at the moment."

Yeh i don't know the best review system for games. 5 star system works for movies as it is such a subjective thing, and seeing if a movie is worth watching or not only costs 5 bucks at the video store and an hour and a half of your time. Games on the other hand can 100 dollars and to finish can take around 20 hours, so i guess the review system has to be deeper.

Aslo games can be much more easily broken into different catagories than movies, but as graphics and sound become better, it too is becoming much more subjective as to what is good and bad. I think further down the line more and more reviews will take the more round figure system, but for now i think it best that reviews stay as deep as they are.

Before they became GFW, CGW didn't even have review scores. They adopted them again after the switch though--because people want that. They want to skip the text when possible and skip down to something easy to digest.

Gamestop/EB Games No Longer Taking Bioshock LE Pre-Orders

If you dawdled on pre-ordering that BioShock LE for the 360 from GameStop, it's too late now. The game retailer has recently halted taking pre-orders for the game everyone wants to get their hands on. There is speculation on why this has happened ranging from not having enough copies to meet demand to GameStop finding broken Big Daddy figures in some of the boxes. Regardless of the reason, if you waited, you're S.O.L and you'll have to make do with the plain old version of the game, wait until the limited edition makes a second run or buy it an an inflated price on eBay. I guess that's why it's called the "limited" edition.

Well the only site I could find it on was GAME. Play had their own exclusive face plate when you bought the regular edition. They have stopped taking pre-orders of the CE 360 edition but still have the PC version on GAME.

Attorney Jack Thompson has sent a complaint letter to the Federal Trade Commission for BioShock advertisements aired during Friday night's WWE Smackdown. GamePolitics has the full complaint from Thompson, a portion of it states: "Take-Two... is aggressively marketing its newest Mature-rated video game to kids under 17 years of age... On this Friday's night's 8 pm Eastern time airing of WWE's wrestling program "Smackdown," there were repeated ads for Take-Two/Rockstar Game's Mature-rated, incredibly violent BioShock ... This rampant fraudulent trade practice is precisely what 'Big Tobacco' did with its 'Joe Camel' and other teen-targeting ads, while at the same time lying to Congress that it was not marketing its adult product to kids."
He's blaming R* for games that they have nothing to do with now! I'm sure they'd love to take credit for Bioshock though :)

But to call this game simply a first-person shooter, a game that successfully fuses gameplay and narrative, is really doing it a disservice. This game is a beacon. It's one of those monumental experiences you'll never forget, and the benchmark against which games for years to come will, and indeed must, be measured. This isn't merely an evolution of System Shock 2, but a wake-up call to the industry at large. Play this, and you'll see why you should demand something more from publishers and developers, more than all those derivative sequels forced down our throats year after year with only minor tweaks in their formulas. It's a shining example of how it's possible to bring together all elements of game design and succeed to the wildest degree.

If you're debating which version to get, the PC version handles better. In part it's because of the greater precision with the mouse and keyboard, but also with how the plasmids and weapons are selected. With the default settings RMB switches between the two, LMB fires, and you use the mouse wheel instead of a radial menu to select a specific plasmid or weapon. This keeps you rooted in the action to a greater degree than in the Xbox 360 version, since you don't have to keep pausing the game. By hitting Shift you can bring up a plasmid and weapon selection screen if you so desire, but the mouse wheel scrolled through fast enough to stay useful. Note that you can't set LMB to fire a weapon and RMB to fire a plasmid; there's only one fire function. We also noticed the option to bind the functions "switch and fire weapon" and "switch and fire plasmid," but when we tested it out these only switched from weapon to plasmid and back again, much like the RMB default function. All weapons and plasmids are also bound to the number and function keys, making it even easier to ensure you always have the ideal attack at the ready.

If you've got a Vista rig with a DX10 card, you can expect some heightened particle effects, crisper real-time shadows, and more dynamic water, but the game looks gorgeous regardless.
pc.ign.com review

Sounds great, I'll play both.. 360 version now(ish) and the PC version once I complete my next upgrade cycle. DX10 support supposedly kicks up the visual fidelity a notch too. Maybe I'll install Vista after all. :)
