He's blaming R* for games that they have nothing to do with now! I'm sure they'd love to take credit for Bioshock though :)
And while Jack Thompson is obviously an idiot, this goes to the fact whoever was the one to decide that 2K should suddenly become a huge brand should be fired right now. People keep getting 2K confused with Take-2. Given the fact that Take-2 was lead by crooks, has to redo its earnings statements, and is dealing with the problems of R* getting hit with ratings an delays, being confused with Take-2 isn't a good thing.

In addition, the big "2K" titles, its sports franchises are dealing with the whole liscense thing and it would have made more sense to take the name Irrational for eh publisher than corporate branding everything 2k

I don't have Vista yet, I just wasn't sure I was going to install it (as my primary OS anyway) after I get my new hardware.. it all depends on driver maturity and if most of the kinks have been worked out of the system.

But if DX10 is really offering noticeable improvements in games coming out right now than I shall get on board with Vista as soon as I have DX10 hardware. A lot of gamers have complained about many a Vista issue, so I've been hesitant, but it looks like that's going to change soon.

I'm still going to wait a little while longer though, was hoping on more news on the Geforce 9 series by now. Nvidia seems to be slowing down. I want to be confident in my ability to run Crysis and UE3 games @ 1920x1200.. I'm not sure the 8 series is really going to be up to task.

Price is actually another issue. Even OEM versions of Vista are still pretty damn expensive. I'm planning on doing my upgrade cycle either in December or January.. and I'm also hoping to find some good deals on Vista by then.

That was a bit of a confusing statement though.. I guess I should have said, "Maybe I'll buy Vista afterall."--My bad. It's nice to see DX10 finally providing PC gamers with a reason to do so.. even if the improvements aren't very drastic over the DX9 versions of the same software.
And while Jack Thompson is obviously an idiot...
Indeed.

Sony Defence Force give Bioshock a 5/10.

Let the flaming begin...

SDF Review: Bioshock (360)

Bioshock

After many months of anticipation I finally got my copy of Bioshock and played through it over the past few days. There are many things to like about Bioshock such as the graphics (not animation), parts of the story and the water effects. That’s about where the good stuff ends.

First let me say how excited I was for the game after playing the demo on the 360. While the animation seemed stiff and you could tell the 360 was being pushed too hard it still looked like it had a lot of potential. So imagine my disappointment when I got the final version only to find none of the animation hitches, shooting glitches and AI was cleaned up. I also wonder how much better the graphics would’ve been had they not been compressed to fit on a DVD. Now I do not fault the developers for this, they only had so much system power to work with so maybe this will all be addressed with the PS3 version when it comes out.

To conclude, let this game cook in the oven just a little bit longer and wait for the superior PS3 version. Cleaned up textures, animations, AI, extra weapons, Home space, standard HDD and Blu-ray will make this flawed game into a perfect gem.

SDF Score: 5/10

yeah nice try Sony Fanboys... your jealousy isn't showing... nah.

BioShock creates an amazing world that you'll want to explore from top to bottom and a compelling mystery that slowly comes together as you play.

A 9.0 is still pretty high praise guys, it's not like he bashed the experience. I'm interested to see if they just give the PC version the same score, like everyone else has. That would have qualified as "superb" under their old scale--and it's their editors choice.

He mentioned frequent seizing as the game was played. Did any other reviews mention this at all? The reviews I read didn't. I'm just wondering if one of the apparent flaws of the game is isolated to his 360.

I really didn't read that many reviews though.

Or it's an issue that other critics chose to ignore. If that's the case, I'm glad he did mention it.. they shouldn't just pass off technical issues after all.

They're saying that PDZ is as good as BioShock....PDZ!! That is cause to beat the crap outta them.

PDZ is Greg Kasavin's worst review ever. It's really sad that one of the best videogame critics ever fell for launch game hype--but it happens. That said, it's in the past.. they can't give Bioshock an 11 after all :P

CLASSIC Gamespot.

They got beat to the punch in the review, so they give it a low score. They did the same crap with HL2 -- with 3 2004 FPS having the same or higher scores -- and then turned around and gave it FPS of the year honors, even though in "their opinion" 3 other FPS were as good or even better.

Sorry, I call it as it is. These guys in are a business. Controversy = $$$ Cash.

Media companies are in a dog-eat-dog world and you don't get advert cash from following the flock.

This isn't to say that the reviewer didn't have issues with the game, but that is the issue with it being a "Gamespot" review and not a "Jeff" review. That is a big issue with many reviews (even worse when they stick someone on a game who doesn't even like the genre... e.g. an arcade fan on a sim racer) -- so the very nature of the horrible reviewing trends to begin with creates these nasty little loopholes that feed the system.

I didn't even mention the advert / preview revenue tie ins, and the tension that causes competing companies. IGN had a lot of Bioshock ads up...

Anyhow, this is why you read reviews -- not the scores -- and look at the body of opinion if you are on the fence. OR seek the opinions of reviewers with similar tastes, biases, and as well as friends with the same.

Interestingly I work with a guy who loves the crappiest games and hate, absolutely hates, almost all your true AAA games (not hyped). The guy loves NASCAR and thinks Stranglehold is the best game he has played in a year and thinks every big release in the last year has been horrible (everything from Gears of War to "Frenza" which "drives like crap").

So yeah, this is why you need reliable sources.

And we can always trust Gamespot, especially with a late review, to pick someone who can be controversial.

I run both XP and Vista in dual-boot, and I still run XP most of the time.. That's because the (Nvidia) videodrivers for Vista are still sucky.. They lack features and performance is down upto 30% in some games.. So yeah, Vista might be better, but not for playing games.. Yet..

Btw, I just played the Bioshock PC demo, and it was exactly the same as the Xbox 360 demo.. Still no playershadow etc, so I guess that's by design.. The demo ran fine on my PC (E6600, 2GB, 7900GS OC) with high settings, but I had to lower the resolution to 1152x864 because on my native 1680x1050 I experienced heavy mouse-lag (which indicates to low fps).. Sucks my 7900GS fails at playing this game in my native widescreen resolution with good fps.. I guess it's time for an videocard upgrade again (I knew it was coming)..

Oh come on Ace, it's definitely a Gerstmann review.. and if there are technical issues, maybe it should come down a peg. It's a 9.0, it's not like he bashed the game! He gave Twilight Princess an 8.9--now that may have been for attention but I seriously don't think this is a bad review. He's just trying to be a bit more of a hardass now that Kasavin (they best!) is gone.

I wonder if he'll review the PC version as well, or if they'll get Jason Ocampo to do it. I'm interested to see if they give it the same score, like everyone else has.

You appear to be right.. I really think they butchered their review system. It's a shame, because I really liked their old one. The whole achievement BS is uh, BS.
