GSY Review PS5 Xbox Series X PC Switch

Just five days after our review of Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy, we’re back in action to give you our full take on Onimusha: Way of the Sword. Originally scheduled for September 25, Capcom’s game has been moved up slightly and will be available as early as September 4 on Nintendo Switch 2, PC, PS5, and Xbox Series. Needless to say, the end of August was a hectic time as we worked to meet the deadline and bring you another review.

Verdict

It really does seem like the idea that a new Capcom game might one day fail to live up to expectations is becoming more and more like pure fiction. Despite a mediocre implementation of its semi-open world, Onimusha: Way of the Sword delivers such a satisfying experience thanks to its combat system that you can’t hold this minor flaw against it. The game’s macabre and horror-filled atmosphere is another strength of this installment, which does a better job of blending seriousness and humor than previous entries, while featuring a much more endearing and charismatic hero. A successful comeback for the 25-year-old franchise, which we hope will be followed by one or more sequels if it proves to be a hit. Yet another good reason for the Japanese publisher to pop the champagne as it should this back-to-school season of 2026!
  • On the upside
  • The hero, the rest of the cast & the atmosphere
  • Touches of humor amid the horror
  • Excellent combat system
  • Effective and engaging progression system
  • The boss battles
  • Incredible animations
  • Superb voice-acting (English or Japanese)
  • A game packed with content
  • On the downside
  • A hit and miss semi-open area (Kyoto)
  • Basic enemies that are way too passive
  • A few reused bosses in side (and main) content
  • We would have liked more sunshine

I miss your english video reviews, at least the verdict in english would be cool.
This game is an another example that cutting edge visuals are not needed, looks good enough and plays really well. I would mention at the pros that it has a demo, a tradition which nowadays is rarity because I was not sure about this one but actually playing it makes a big difference in purchase decision.
Really good and indeed regular enemies are outdated, multiple enemies are not attacking simultaneously and their attacks are not that diverse (at least in the demo).

Loakum Ugh….scratch that previous comment. The upcoming Game of Thrones video game is a F’in mobile phone game. Why can’t they came an open world GoT game, like Witcher 3 or God of War? (> 3 Months ago)
