GSY Review PC PS4 Xbox One Switch

We're still doing our best to give you the most varied coverage of May releases and it is now time to take a look at Huntdown, a retro style action game we first told you about back in 2016. It is now out on PC (EGS), Playstation 4, Switch and Xbox One and it deserves all your attention. Find out why inside.

Verdict


Huntdown is like those action-packed movies of the 80s and 90s, violent, fun and filled with punchlines every 5 seconds. Its retro approach does not mean the game simply mimicks the likes of Midnight Resistance, Turrican or Contra, it adds cover mechanics which do not incite the player to stay hidden and play it safe (enemies do come to get you and covers can be destroyed) and it's also possible to slide to dodge attacks (you are given a short invincibility window when you use that ability). The end result is a fast-paced game in which you're always on the move, with a certain level of variety in the way things happen (though all you'll do is shoot to kill). The number of weapons available is also something we should underline, as is the fun felt when using every single one of them. In fact, the game is so entertaining that we have decided to forgive its lack of online co-op, despite the fact that bosses can be rough when playing solo (even in normal mode, the second out of 4 difficulty settings). Thankfully, the game features couch co-op, which should bring back nice memories to those of you who played all those games on CPC, Atari ST, Amiga and the rest. As it stands, Huntdown offers a great adrenaline rush during the course of its 20-level adventure and it's not even that expensive if you like the genre and want a good challenge on the hardest difficulty settings. Last but not least, the Switch version remains smooth in every circumstance and the game looks absolutely stellar in handheld mode. So let the hunt begin!
