GSY Video PC

Available and already on Gamersyde! Quake II RTX is being shown on your favorite website tonight in several videos of the first mission of the game. Obviously, you will need an nVidia 2000-series graphics card to take advantage of this technology. The videos were captured in 1440p on an i9 9900K as well as a RTX 2080Ti.

Nice!!! Was your render res at 4k and your capture at 1440p, or were both at 1440p? What was your average fps?

I haven't been impressed with any real time ray tracing yet. This is no exception. I guess I just have a different idea of ray tracing, you know, those seemingly incredibly tangible renders that you got from softimage, lightwave etc.. back in the day, and now maya, 3ds max, vray, etc.. Even low poly renders with true full on ray tracing is just 100 times better than this and other stuff I've seen in real time. Real time ray tracing has a LONG, LOOOOONG way to go. I'll give it 5 years before I'm truly impressed and 10 to 20 years before we see present day pixar quality stuff in real time. At least they have gotten the ball rolling on it though.

That's because it's not true ray tracing, and really shouldn't be called it. It should be called some other industry bullshit terminology, not ray tracing, although it's goal is to "replicate" the same things ray tracing achieves. It's just nowhere on the same level as true photon based ray tracing found in engines like Mental Ray or Renderman.

The term you're probably looking for is Path Traced Global Illumination which is indeed used.

Isnt the technology simply not there, I read that current PC hardware cannot come close to rendering in real time what off-line rendering can do (which is ok!). Not only that, this is a new technique, so it'll take a while for developers to figure how best to use the techniques. I also believe it'll be a while before it gets consistently good, I'm also glad that it 's being pushed by Nvidia and AMD so that developers have a reason to explore the tech
