GSY Review PS4 Xbox One PC

After 2 months of sun and scorching heat, you are about to put your graphics cards and current gen consoles to the test with Remedy's latest, Control. For the occasion, we have prepared a series of high quality videos of both the PC and Xbox One X version of the game, which should allow you to see what RTX can do. We even have a comparison video for those who like to spot the differences. If you don't have enough with all this, then join us tonight at 9 CEST for a special livestream dedicated to the RTX and gameplay features of Remedy's new title.
Note: All our PC videos were captured with the Nvidia drivers released on August 20.
Rig used: i9 9900k, RTX 2080 Ti, 16 GB of Ram

Verdict

Over the past few months, we've seen people starting to doubt Remedy's ability to make a great third person shooter, but they couldn't have been more wrong in the end. Control is so much fun to play, more dynamic than Quantum Break or Alan Wake, faster paced in its gameplay sequences, which proves once again how talented the Finish studio still is. The mystery around the story and the world in which it is set is very engaging and we've liked the fact that nothing seems to make sense for a good amount of time. It doesn't mean everything is perfect though, as the game is quite demanding, even without RTX. To those who played Quantum Break on PC, it won't come as a surprise, but it's still something that will bother some, even more so as image quality is on par with their previous game. Obviously, if you add RTX to the mix, you can seriously expect the game to run smoothly in 4K when maxed out, at least not if you're the sensible type. The good news though is that playing Control never feels like playing a mere reskin of Quantum Break, it has its own identity whether in terms of universe or gameplay. Remedy arrives with the first big game of this end of year, we are going to be busy in the upcoming weeks/months, but rest assured that we'll have everything under Control.
  • On the upside
  • Gameplay is pure fun
  • Impressive physics engine
  • Good sound design
  • Very pretty lighting effects
  • Secondary missions are pretty good...
  • The kind of story you love because of the way it melts your brain
  • Very intriguing game world
  • RTX adds visual fidelity
  • On the downside
  • RTX is unsurprisingly demanding
  • Uneven cutscenes and character faces
  • Well-lit places would look better with more contrast
  • Could use a bit more variety in combat situations
  • ... but random missions are redundant
  • Long loadings on consoles

Thanks for the review and the videos. Also, good luck with the livestream. Not gonna watch it because I'm on blackout on Control, only watched the E3 trailer. Want to go in as unspoiled as possible.

Also only read the description, not gonna read any reviews until I'm done with the game. Hopefully it's a great game. Now to prepare my PC for the intensive abuse it's about to endure.

PS. Do you guys have any plans to cover Astral Chain on the Switch? Got an Essential from EuroGamer and has an 88 score on MetaCritic.

Review for Astral Chain is up on the French side, no plans for a translation I'm afraid. No new videos have been captured since the preview one due to unexpected events on davton's side.

I've read that RTX in this game is not just for reflections but also for GI ( Global Illumination ), SSAO etc. Can those be enabled/disabled individually via the options or you're stuck with the whole (performance-dropping) package ?

No problem. I Google translated 4 parts of Astral Chain's review on the French side and fixed a few incoherent sections.

Description:
While the schedule of the outings intensifies greatly with the approach of Q4, Nintendo continues to splash its console with exclusives and proposes to us Astral Chain. Developed by PlatinumGames, the game was particularly eye-catching when it was announced during a Nintendo Direct, and we can now give you our opinion.

Verdict:
Original IPs are now a little more discreet than before in the midst of many successful games, and it is with undisguised pleasure that we welcome Astral Chain, an excellent game that can be enjoyed in the couch in front of the TV as well as in portable mode. Scenario, gameplay, characters, everything is done to make you have a good time, and PlatinumGames demonstrates once again its know-how. Another very nice exclusive for the Nintendo Switch which will be followed, hopefully, by other attempts in the future.

On the upside:
- An excellent scenario
- Interesting characters
- The gameplay with the Legions
- A good life

On the downside:
- Pretty visible aliasing
- Sometimes a bit messy in the heart of the action

Sorry if there's any incoherent parts, some just made no sense to me.

I've read that performance is rough on standard PS4 & XBO.

even on ps4 pro it has that same weird issue like Days Gone, where the game freezes for 5-10 seconds from time to time.

Sometimes the differences are shocking and others hardly noticeable .Still not convinced yet that ray tracing is worth the sacrifice in image quality required to run it at playable framerates
