GSY Review PC PS4 Xbox One

Walking sims do not seem to be as trendy today as they used to, so we were curious to see what The Suicide of Rachel Foster could bring to the table. Time to find out what we thought of Daedalic's new game and to watch the 2 long videos we prepared for you.

Verdict

It is pretty obvious that The Suicide of Rachel Foster was inspired by Campo Santo's Firewatch in that it involves 2 protagonists talking to each other via a radio (or rather Zack Morris' cell phone). Sadly, Daedalic's title never manages to reach the same level of realism in the way the 2 characters interact with one another. When playing Firewatch, you could easily forget you were playing a video game while here, it's like you're always reminded of it because of how the developers seem to forget the importance of silence. The result is that conversations sometimes feel forced, with an absence of a natural link between each other in some instances. It's a shame really because the atmosphere can truly be spot on and the voice actors deliver great performances overall. It's also disappointing to see that such a short adventure can suffer from a few problems of pace, up to the way some of the days end or how long the "what day it is screen" lasts. We won't go as far as to say that The Suicide is a total waste of time, but you should know that despite its solid atmosphere and its rather moving (though not especially surprising) story, it's not the kind of title you will remember playing in the months to come.
  • On the upside
  • Nice visuals overall
  • Excellent voice acting
  • Solid atmosphere
  • The sequence in the dark with a Polaroid as the sole source of light
  • On the downside
  • Very short (3 hours)
  • Interactivity remains limited
  • Things don't unfold very naturally
  • The final mystery isn't that surprising
  • Never reaches Firewatch's heights

I haven't played Firewatch yet, so I can't do that comparison. What I see from the videos this game is certainly intriguing. I like any kind of environmental storytelling and lived-in environments, and this game certainly seems to deliver that.

toelessfoot Right. I think programmable shaders were adopted fairly early on consoles (xbox360/ps3) (3 Days ago)

  • MrWhite

MrWhite @toelessfoot: Well, only recently they have been. I think this is the first gen I've seen where PC's are playing catch up. Not through hardware power, but through development cycles (3 Days ago)

  • toelessfoot

toelessfoot Yeah I think innovations on the console side are taken up more quickly by PC than vice versa because consoles are really lead platform for everything (3 Days ago)

  • MrWhite

MrWhite At least for most gamers. Similar to when everything went to pci-e (4 Days ago)

  • MrWhite

MrWhite I think we could be seeing a dramatic shift in PC hardware where it'll be essential to own both an SSD and a next gen card with the api's to use them. That also would probably require new motherboards (4 Days ago)

  • MrWhite

MrWhite If a game is built from the ground up to take advantage of that, though... (4 Days ago)
