Just finished it as well, and I have no clue what the hell just happened. Reading various topics on the net seems I'm not the only one left confused by the ending.

Although...'ending' is hardly how I'd describe it.

Thanks ;) I am sure the others will appreciate it. Now to answer you:

SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER - Highlight the text at your own risk!

That ending was ONE HELL of a cliffhanger! The way I understood it is Alan is stuck behind and Alice is saved, there was something said sometime during the game that only ONE can be saved or something... cant remember where it was.... The Ocean part though I didnt get.... in any case I hope the game sells enough so we can get our sequel!

Yeah, that's what I've gathered as well.

It was a good game, but the combat got old and frustrating after chapter 4. It's not that I couldn't get passed the combat sequences, but it's just that at some point I got this feeling of "oh no, not again" every time a combat sequence was imminent. And that's just not a good thing.

Definitely want a sequel though. It's still one of the more unique experiences around...

I honestly, had no problem with the combat past episode 1 when I got used to it. It was quite fun after that. Anyhow, I will be replaying the game on Nightmnare just before the DLC release in July which is nice to know is going to be free!

I know man, I know. Enjoy it while it lasts. Also, did I mention that this game has THE most perfect control system ever! The control system here would have worked WONDERS in resident Evil!

the way i understood the whole ocean thing, was basically him saying the darkness is far more widespread then was first believed, not a lake, but an ocean. maybe him setting himself up for a future "novel" focusing on the widespread darkness? it'd be a bit cliche'd but who knows.

as for the end in general, i found it far too open for my liking. i like games that are open to the players interpretation (SH2), but this felt like it was left open becasue they had DLC to release to REALLY finish it off. felt cheap imo.

and yes, alice is alive, and wake is left finishing the story, and i asume the second alan wake (the scene where there are 2 alan's stood in front of zane) will be living out the story alan is writing as a sort of puppet. alan is essentially writing himself and the "clone" is doing the actions. i found it weird that alan wake is essentially just a creation of zanes original story tho. much like i assume most if not all of the NPC's in bright falls are just alan wakes fictional character creations.

it's incredibly confusing to get you'r head around. especially when you think back to past events (alan gave alice the clicker, so how could it have possibly been in the shoe box in the lightbulb filled room?

the imagery at the very end tho, where you see rose holding a lantern and nightingdale in the shadows of the store window was good tho, cos the way i interpretted that was that nightingdale was basically the new barberra jagger and rose was the new "keeper" (woman in the well lit room)

overall i liked the game, it has issues, combat did get kinda tiresome by the 5th chapter and i seriously hated the way the designers created fake tention by funnelling you down a ledge to get ambushed. i got more and more aware of it the more it went on and it went on untill the very VERY end. controlls got me killed sometimes too, where i'd be holding RB and he wouldnt even light a flare....i was gagging for some environment variety too by the end. got kinda tired of running through the samey looking dark woodland, (despite how awesome looking they where) i dunno, mixed bag, story up untill the end was good. combat was good up untill a point, atmosphere was awesome througout, technically decent aside from some crappy facial animations and character models.

glad i bought it, but definately not worth the five year wait imo

and that's exactly why some reviews slammed the game a bit. I said it before, had this game come out 2 years ago, it would have been praised left, right and centre and I think it's unfair to criticise the game for that. we need to see games as they are, you cant use outdated technology to blame a game if the underlying ingredients are no short of brilliant, fresh and unique.

Rehashes of old formulas in shiny coating are automatically praised but great ideas coated with modest technology are unfairly critisized - sadly that's the state of gaming today.... let's appreciate games for GAMEPLAY!

but that isnt the case. combat gets tired, repetative enemys, samey looking environments, major design flaws like removing your arsenal just becasue you had a helicopter ride or because you start a new area (unless you're thrown off a cliff or something where it makes sense). fake tension design (the aformentioned funnel>jump down ledge>ambushed that is repeated over and over) . sure a lot of things in the game work great (visuals, story, and atmosphere being the main ones) . but it isnt like i think it's a mixed bag JUST becasue it took 5 years. but it certainly should have been better/more polished considering it DID thke 5 years.

LOL yea when i jumped off the helicopter i had a WTF moment too.

I had a feeling from about half way through that Wake would turn out to be Zanes creation, I thought it was a cool twist all be it pretty obvious

i was going more towards the idea that alan wake WAS zane...close, but not quite on the money, was a good twist imo, i just didnt like the lack of closure. mass effect is still the best example of a long running franchise that knows how to keep each story prety self contained with a start, middle and end. alan wake as it stands, is missing an end imo. and it seems to be purely for the sake of the upcoming DLC episodes (which btw, at 800pts each, i hape they offer a decent amount of gameplay)

best story in a game!?!? damn, thats some praise! Wish i could play this game :(

I can think of a few games recently that had such good stories that I was blown away. Some that come to mind are Uncharted 2, infamous, mass effect, GTA 4 and now Red Dead Redemption. I feel like stories in games are improving drastically this generation.
