I don't think those observations are mostly about singleplayer. Most people aren't saying that because of the campaign. The only bitching I've heard specific to the campaign is about quick time events. I don't think that has anything to do with Call of Duty. These types of scripted events pre-date Call of Duty 4. Plus, you seem to have (limited) control throughout. That's.. uh.. a little better. I just hope there are very, very few of these events.

The majority of the bitching has to do with gameplay. Because this is a videogame. And most of that has to do with multiplayer, because that's where most people are going to be spending most of their play time. The Call of Duty "influence" is pretty damn apparent in the multiplayer game, despite Frankie's best attempt at spin.

Over the course of my 90 minutes or so with Halo 4's campaign, I came around. These moments were joined by other moments, like a climb up a shaft on the Foward Unto Dawn as the ship is torn apart by Requiem's inexorable pull, but they didn't dominate, and they served to move things forward in a more dynamic way than a cutscene or first person segment would have. And they all looked pretty fantastic.

Except that all of the impressions I've read/heard so far point to it still playing/feeling like a Halo game. I guess you can take it for what it is with all the excitement of a new title, but I haven't heard anyone that's played it say anything about it feeling like COD. These criticisms come from people who haven't played it. Time will tell, but I still don't think it will have as big an impact as you think.

I know from past posts that you really don't like the progression stuff in MP, that's fair enough, but it looks like H4 is handling it better than say, BF3, where you have to unlock items/weapons that can give you a distinct advantage. I really like BF3 too, but at least in H4 everyone has access to all the weapons from the beginning. Probably AAs too. My guess it the unlocks will mostly be cosmetic, which is cool because it's fun for me to progess with new armours and stuff. Its a good way to progress without compromising balance and gameplay.

Weapon drops (ie from "killstreaks") can be taken by anyone, and can even be used strategically (baiting). Sounds fine with me. The only thing that comes close to control-less kills is that auto-turret, but I read it's near useless( at least the reviewer couldn't make effective use of it), or maybe its good for distraction/ flushing people out of cover.

I actually like AAs(except armor lock, which is thankfully gooooone!)- they make encounters more interesting/dynamic, and now that everyone can sprint, I may actually use more of them, lol...

I don't like unlocks at all, but this is pure bullshit. Firstly, the best gun in BF3 was hands down the M16 until the last patch. That's the first gun in the game. And secondly.. you will have to unlock weapons for loadouts in Halo 4. And there are far, far more balance tweaking perks in Halo 4. Many of them are actually straight out of Call of Duty. I don't expect the gunplay and movement to change so dramatically that you won't still "feel" like you're playing Halo at its core. That does not mean the game can not be bloated beyond that core.

http://www.ign.com/wikis/halo-4/Loadouts

"Today we actually have everything unlocked. When the game comes out this November, you'll have to work to unlock new weapons, new armor abilities, new grenades, and new armor mods (perks)." - David Ellis, multiplayer designer.

You guessed wrong. Sounds worse than BF3. Sounds like just Call of Duty.

I'm not even going to touch on stuff like killstreaks which are just broken from conception.

It's also worth noting that nearly everyone who has played it has done so at a press event. A controlled event without access to most of the customization in the game. Like you said, time will tell.

That's funny, because this exchange reminds me of an earlier one, where you said..

"What COD did wrong was the automatic kills on top of getting stuff for smoking everyone. I didn't have a problem with rewarding good play, but I did with having unmanned turrets earning kills."

Which is apparently okay now that you realize it's in this game too ;D

:P not an accurate representation of what I said, and I don't like the auto turret idea. I said that the closest thing to auto kill is that auto turret, but that the write-up I saw said it was next to useless. To me that says it shouldn't be there anyway, but perhaps there is a use for it?

I just don't believe this will be anything like COD. It sucks that you have to unlock weapons though.

As far as BF3, I also said "things" ie scopes, sights, attatchments, friggin' chaff and missiles. As for weapons, some people do better with different weapons. Regardless, it's a tough call to make. I do think progression can increase enjoyment in some ways, and can keep things mixed up, but it all will come down to execution. We won't know if 343 will fall into the good or bad category.

That said, there is a lot of Positive feedback from people on this one, and I think you are making it sound catastrophically negative. We'll know if they pulled it off soon( even if not soon enough for me)...

It's a direct quote. You have an opinion about a thing that quickly shifts once you realize it's a part of Halo 4. That's a recurring theme.

And gameplay modifying perks. And armor abilities. And grenades. How can you believe it's nothing like Call of Duty with all of these features lifted directly from Call of Duty? No one is suggesting that it's going to play out just like COD.. but the influence is right there in your face.

I think BF3's progression is extremely light compared to what we've seen in Halo 4, but I'm not even sure why that matters. You could certainly argue against that, especially with the vehicle unlocks. A few minutes ago, all of the unlocks in this game were cosmetic in your view, and now that you're actually aware that they are not, you seem largely unaffected by the truth. And again, nearly all of those impressions came from controlled events where people did not even have access to all the game had to offer, and likely played for a fairly brief period to boot. It doesn't seem like it really matters what they do. You're going to find some way to rationalize it.

Those impressions don't mean much to me. Post release impressions do. It reminds me of all of the people who defended SFxTekken's gem system, which wasn't even available at playtests.

fwiw I don't care if you even like these things.. that's entirely your call :)

Very true, also i been following the Gaf thread and others, and some of the most vocal and biggest haters of these additions, after playing for a whole weekend were complete converts, and praised just how good the whole flow and feel was, but more importantly still the Halo they loved. They also compared it to Reach and said it was now impossible to go back to playing Reach, which is not hard as near everyone on Gaf shits on Reach MP at every opportunity they get.

Dude, I'm not switching anything. I didn't say you misquoted, but that you are misrepresenting it in the case of your point. I said I didn't like getting Auto kills ON TOP of getting stuff for smoking everyone. The next sentence backs it up by saying I don't mind rewarding good play. I think some ways are better than others. I'm not even debating that they are taking some ideas from COD. I even said that I don't like the Idea of an Auto turret in Halo, but that at least it doesn't sound terribly effective.

I'm saying it will come down to implementation as to whether it's a good thing or not. We haven't really SEEN anything on how that stuff will work in H4. You are seeing what you want to see (just like I am), but at least the people saying are positive about it. :)

I will even extend it to AAs, but guess what? I still love BF3 regardless, and I think there is a general divide on the validity of these things...

I'm really happy that they've added in a few of those "in between" moments that are neither traditional gameplay nor cutscene to help break the action up a bit, and to generally give the player a different way of experiencing story or progression in a Halo game. This, like what we saw at E3 -- which appears to have been moved around and modified solely for the purpose of that E3 gameplay demo according to Frankie -- shares the same general purpose as the elevator shaft sequence.

It wouldn't surprise me in the least if the game had just 2 such instances that are like the elevator sequence in an entire playthrough. More times than not, I think it will just be a more scripted section of gameplay like what we saw at E3, and that's good, because I think it will give them an opportunity to generally do more with the game's story without necessarily making the game longer, or without using very many more minutes of cutscenes. Give more story, or just their story, without necessarily having there be too many situations where the player isn't actually interacting with anything.

Now you're in the spirit. If you start Halo 4 in 4 player co-op, it's basically confirmed that you actually see 3 other Spartans, in addition to the Chief, wake up from Cryo sleep. I have absolutely no idea what happens if you're supposed to be in a scripted section of some sort, and it's 4 player co-op. I highly doubt, for example, that when, and if, all 4 players emerge from elevator shaft, that they will all be encountering and have to toss an Elite down that same shaft. Pretty good question :P

Regardless of how they handle it, those events are going to get tiresome in co-op. I'll be plenty happy if there are only two such things in the entire game.

It's another one of those "don't worry! this awesome thing will barely change anything!" things ;)

Talking about gameplay is blasphemy and a waste of time. Lets all just masturbate to pictures of Master Chief instead.

That already accounts for 50+ pages of this thread. We were just mixing things up a bit.
