If you can't see that there are much better ways to differentiate the classes, then you don't get the point of gaming in general.
That's a bit of an unreasonable jump in logic.

I'm just SO disappointed in what Bioware has done here, theyve taken a loved RPG and stripped all the RPG elements out of it.
Don't say that shit to me Tomarru because now you're the 4th person I've heard to voice this disappointment, and it's basically confirming my worst fears about ME2. From the very beginning I was VEHEMENTLY opposed to all of these damned new shooter elements because I feared ME might diminish as an RPG and reemerge as a full fledged shooter. I made my peace with it because everyone was saying that improving ME's gunplay was only going to make it better. I won't know for sure until I play it myself, but it looks like Bioware sacrificed key RPG elements to make ME2 more like a full fledged shooter.

I've also been told that there are only 6 armors TOTAL in the game, that is a HUGE drop from the number of armors in ME1, and we won't have access to all of them either. I have truly tried my best to insulate myself from spoilers but I was also keeping information from myself at the same time. I didn't know that the Mako was GONE, and I imagine that planet exploration has gone right along with it or has been seriously condensed.

I watched my friend playing the game for about an hour and a half, yes he downloaded it. You won't get any spoilers from me, but one thing becomes immediately clear about this game from watching it.

It's far more superbly handled than Mass Effect 1. What do I mean? Well, how about when you have a certain objective to complete and you actually complete that objective. Now it's time to go back and report to whoever to let them know that you succeeded. Know what Mass Effect 2 does?

You automatically transition there and the cutscene begins to push the story along. Just feels like there's far less down time than was ever the case in the first ME. I saw this happen multiple times as well, so it truly seems to be a design decision they opted for this time around.

It saves you the tedious walk back to where it is you need to go. The walk back in a lot of cases in ME1 always felt like an excuse to make the game longer than it truly was, but with Mass Effect 2, it appears they've got so much more to show here that they don't mind sparing the player the walk back. Also, collecting all the various minerals now actually means something. I saw him surveying a planet and collecting materials so he could have enough to improve the armor on the Normandy.

And, of course, combat is far improved. What I found cool as well is that you no longer appear to level up your talking through a character menu. You level it up through actually playing the game, making decisions, talking with people.

Yes, but you only have one choice called "upgrade armour", it's not like you can choose armour thats better at protecting against beam weapons or explosives or something and thats exactly the step back here. They have largely removed stats, theres the odd thing you can "upgrade" that gives +10% damage or whatever, but largely you only get a choice of like that extra dmg, OR extra health and in the end in makes no difference to your survivability.

Thats my complaint, the rpg elements are all but tacked on, in the end the game feels like a glorified version of overlord or something rather than a true rpg. You have core hubs where you can interact with people and "buy" stuff, but largely you can ignore it all as it neither adds nor takes away from your experience. Really, thats the stuff i loved in the first game, finding cool armours and weapons, determining what best suited the best situation, giving specific weapons to specific chars. I aint changed my weapon loadout in 2 at all, the game auto equips anything you pick up to all your characters.

Even levelling seems automatic, i ain't noticed any difference in how my char plays now compared to how it played at the start of the game, and theres only like 4 skills to boost anyway so i dont see much variation there. I aint even looked at exp or anything, i dont know what level my char is and feel no urge to seek exp in any way. It just all feels so hollow.

Based on what I saw, I'd have to disagree with that tacked on rpg statement.

But before I get to that, I don't know if you're getting the point with regards to the armor upgrade on the Normandy. Why go overboard with the customization of the ship, when it won't play quite as significant a gameplay role as upgrades like character skills, weapon upgrades, ammo upgrades, armor chest plate upgrades, helmet upgrades, leg related upgrades, etc?

I saw the convo my buddy had with that squad member who told him about the normandy armor upgrade and, long story short, it was just a simple, "the ship needs to be much tougher due to so and so reason".

You see that menu where you can customize your shepherd's combat and casual look? Maybe Bioware just did it so cleverly that you overlooked it, but there's a massive amount of RPG depth masked into that very simple looking system if you pay attention. As it was explained to me, if you actually research to create the various upgrades that can be applied in there, or if you find or buy them. I didn't see my friend buy any, but I assume you can? As my friend described it, "it isn't like I'm finding armors and just putting them on, I'm literally making my own from the various upgrades I'm finding during missions or researching in the Normandy tech lab, like this head piece for example that raises my headshot damage by 10% or this armor chest plate that increases the recharge time on my shields"

It's a far more RPG like system if you ask me. You are making your own stuff ;D I imagine you can likely also find new suit patterns and what not throughout the game.

Also, the leveling system i saw is MUCH better than the one in the previous ME and it's one that will lead to a more unique character.

How do I defend such a statement? For the 1st level of an upgrade you need 1 squad point, for the second, 2 points, for the third, 3 points, for the fourth, 4 points. You may get away with doing things a certain way early on, but it isn't hard to imagine that if you want to truly do something special with your character and make them as unique as possible, you're going to have to be strategic about how you spend those squad points.

You don't necessarily get to get away with the same sloppier method used in the first ME, where a single skill point automatically improved the given skill in some fashion.

That then means that when you level up and get however little squad points, I think it's 2, you won't necessarily have all you need to improve any one particular skill to, say, level 3 or level 4, unless you refrain from upgrading because, again, you need 3 or 4 squad points to take that specific skill to level 3 or 4. Just because you may have 3 squad points doesn't mean you get to unlock level 3 of a skill because you have to go through level 1 and 2 first. So what you are put in the position of potentially doing then, is holding off on bringing up other skills or any skills at all, so you can save it for a later level up so you can use the combined squad points to get that level 3 or level 4 upgrade.

It's less choices than Mass Effect 1 for what you can upgrade, but those lesser choices, from what I saw, are much better implemented and fleshed out than was the case in Mass Effect 1. The class and upgrade system is actually made to mean something in this game. The class system is more strict and also more unique. In combat I saw my buddy use all kinds of cool abilities and combination attacks and, despite how early in the game he was, it seemed to me like he had much cooler and wider range of options at his disposal than appeared to be the case with level 30+ characters in ME1. The characters he was playing with were like level 5.....

From what I saw, I would describe the difference between Mass Effect 1 and 2 like this:

In Mass Effect 1, there is a bunch of crap that exists for virtually no reason at all, just things to pass the time with. RPG mostly in name and recognizable characteristics that one has come to expect of an RPG, not so much in the way of worthwhile content. In Mass Effect 2, even the smallest of things are made to seem more significant than would otherwise be the case in ME1. I also saw him bring back a bottle of brandy to the Normandy doctor and it actually led to some fairly meaningful character development.

For those who "bought" the game and posted in this thread I want to see a photo of the game box with your name in a piece of paper. Or I ban you.

As for posting about a game before it is released: Bad form folks. Posting about a game you pirated (oh, sorry, your cousin did and you "watched") and blabbing about it to those waiting for legit copies sold on the right date is especially bad form.

I am afraid we mods haven't been clear enough about the penalty for being an asshat or piracy.

I'd answer that in more detail, but apparently I'm suspected as having downloaded and ripped off the game so all I'll say to that is: This is Bioware we are talking about, nothing is nerfed.

When my pre-ordered 360 copy comes, I'll gladly take 3 to 5 different pictures all with my name on them. Even though I won't be able to play it yet since my 360 crapped out on me :(

I wouldn't dare download the PC version, because, for one, not being able to use my save game from ME1 is a totally deal breaker. Most important, I actually take pride in owning real copies of big titles. In the first Mass Effect, what you chose as your origin of birth, actually impacted aspects of the story and led to specific quests. There's no way in hell any save game can account for all the things I did in ME1, I know that much because I checked.

Closing Comments

Games like Mass Effect 2 don't come around often enough. Look at any aspect and you can be sure it's great. It's incredibly personal while still retaining a sense of epic sweeping scale. The combat and mission design are outstanding. The visuals, voice acting, soundtrack, and direction are miles ahead of the competition. Perhaps most impressively, Mass Effect 2 manages to fulfill its incredible ambition while only suffering from very few technical hiccups. The only real caveat I should mention is that some of the revelations and plot twists won't be quite as powerful if you haven't played Mass Effect 1, but that isn't any reason to skip this fantastic videogame.

Decided to return the PC version to my friends cousin today *sigh*, I saw a offer today at a electronic store that they were selling 360 Elite with Pure/Lego Batman bundle for 2200 SEK, awesome catch!
So bought it, and now, I have to wait like anyone else (good thing I wasent that far into the PC version) for Mass Effect 2! (controllers FTW ;)

And here is what pisses me off, they had a opened box behind the desk were you purchase products, they had tons of Mass Effect 2 360/PC laying around, I asked them if they could think of selling one for me considering I was buying a 360 from them, but they said I have to wait for 28th :(

Ah well, I had my shot with the PC, I guess I am not THAT lucky afterall.

PS. I can still redownload every content I downloaded when I had my 360 long time ago, re-downloading my NG2 content again :P (Mission mode FTW)

Hmm, yeah I just cant enjoy playing with keyboard and mouse, with any game, unless its a mmo or something, which I dont play (really want to try out Guild Wars 2 though).

One thing that the store has is that they got 30 days return policy, meaning if I changed my mind even if I open it and play it I can return it back within 30 days and get my money back.

My dad was actually checking out the debt and rent today, and we are a bit of short of money for a HDTV we bought and we are short by 2400, so I offered to return my 360 and get the money back and give it to my dad so he can pay off the last debt for the TV. So thats very important thing to do, not a big problem for me considering i got a PS3 and a good enough PC to play games.

Ah well, atleast ME2 is on PC as well. Now that I return my own copy *sigh* i have to wait and repurchase it at GAME on thursday * double sigh*

After Acert posted this, you suddenly returned your copy of ME2 on PC (remember, it's the game you've been looking forward to since...forever), went out and purchased a 360, and the same day, you returned that same 360 again to pay off a debt.

Honestly all of this could have been avoided, if people didn't speak about playing the game already, pirated or not. Just wait for the release day, then start post impressions. Or post some proof, like Acert asked, and speak freely about the game. But let's not derail the topic for a great game with pirate talks :)

ME1 controlled very well with mouse and keyboard i loved it.

This will kinda make me miss elevators:

Would be cool if they did like Dragon Age. During missions, squad mates just have random chats with eachother :)

Speaking about the RPGlite impressions can't comment yet, didn't play it, but honestly i play Mass Effect to interact with our squad members, and the sci fi epicness. :) For a Deep RPG i got Dragon Age.

I'm happy they improved the combat it was lacking on the first game. But i don't like the ways Bioware fixed some problems from first game. For example lots of people didn't like how Mako controled, Bioware way to fix it? They took it off. Inventory? It's very minimal now.

But we will see. I'm sure it will be a great ride.

I dont care if people believe me or not, I am not here to convince people nor do I care. If you think I pirated it, sure thats your opinion, but I dont have time to play the "show proof to the jury or else you are guilty" game.

I did buy it and considering I even saw a box of the game on both PC and 360 it means stores have them but some wont sell them, and thats if you dont know the person who works at the store, and considering I havent done anything illegal to this thread, Acer is trying too hard for something that isnt neccessary. I havent violated any rule on this forum so banning me is just plain silly.

Besides, its my mom and dad who bought the HDTV not me, I am just helping them to give them some of the money I earned to let him pay off the last debt, the way I see it its called being a good son and help your dad out on something, not some foolish reason like you made up for a forum.

I didn't have a problem with the combat in the first game as combat in action RPGs typically function in a different way and pace from full fledged shooters. And ME1 had alot of depth for an action RPG, so the idea that combat got all of Bioware's attention and that RPG elements were merely tweaked and tacked on is little discouraging. I'll certainly know for myself tomorrow if ME2 plays more like a shooter than an RPG, but that's what I've been hearing so far.

I hate that the Mako is gone. And even though I jumped out of it alot to take on enemies for the XP, I liked exploring planets with it because despite it's weapons it was like driving a Moon Rover and that gave it a very classic scifi feel.
